National Oilwell Varco Downhole offers the most comprehensive
range of proven friction reduction tools for Drilling, Completions,
and Intervention Services.
DRILLING, COMPLETION, AND INTERVENTION CHALLENGES
• Holding Tool Face while drilling
• Poor ROP while drilling
• Stick Slip
• Drag on Drillstring while sliding
• Sinusoidal and Helical buckling with coiled tubing
• Lock up on coiled tubing prior to TD of service
SOLUTIONS
The Agitator tool has provided unparalleled downhole friction
reduction technology for far longer than any other tool in the industry.
The Agitator has been used for various applications including:
• Directional drilling
• Coiled tubing operations
• Wellbore intervention
• Fishing
The assembly’s unique ability to reduce friction is achieved by
creating pressure pulses which act on a shock tool above it to gently
oscillate the drillstring.
BENEFITS
• Better weight on bit control
- Prevents weight stacking
- Improved ROP
- Longer PDC bit life
- Drill plugs more effectively
• Improved toolface control
- Reduced reactive torque and spudding events
- More time drilling, less time orienting
• Extended reach drilling capability due to reduced friction
• Improved production – intervene in longer lateral length wells
• Delays Sinusoidal and Helical Buckling in coiled tubing
• Improves any application where friction is a limiting factor
The Agitator tool is compatible with all MWD systems. The oscillations
are low magnitude and they occur only in the longitudinal axis of
the drillstring. The Agitator does not cause harmful lateral vibrations
detrimental to the life of downhole tools.
PROVEN PERFORMANCE
The Agitator has improved Drilling, Completion, and Inter vention
Services in thousands of runs all over the world.

Coiled Tubing Milling Application Permian Basin / West Texas
• 2d” Milling BHA on 1¾” coiled tubing
• Agitator System used after initial lock up with init ial BHA, to reduce friction on coil and allow the CT to reach TD without lockup
BACKGROUND
Well was approached and originally entered with a conventional CT Milling BHA. Upon original attempt three composite plugs were milled and lock
up was seen at 13,100 feet. Two plugs remained in the well at a maximum depth of 15,400 feet.
WELL INFORMATION
• Location: West Texas / Permian Basin
• Horizontal well with max depth of 15,400 feet
• 5½” - 23 lb casing
• BHA Configuration – 2d” Connector, Dual Check Valve, NOV Jar, Disconnect, Circ-Sub, CT Agitator, In-line Filter, 2d” CT Motor, 4.5” Mill
OBJECTIVE
• Overcome buckling and prevent lock up with the Coiled Tubing
• Mill out the last two plugs and reach TD
RESULTS
Addition of the Agitator System immediately reduced the level of weight stacking, providing an additional 2,300 feet of reach and allowing the Coiled
Tubing BHA to mill out the remaining two composite plugs and reach TD.
CONCLUSION
The addition of the Agitator System provided a substantial reduction in coil/borehole friction and allowed the Service Provider to reach TD with Coiled
Tubing.

The Agitator™ System
The Agitator™ System is composed of two tools:
• Agitator™ Tool – generates pressure pulses
• Griffith™ Shock Tool – converts pressure pulses into axial motion
As part of the Fishing BHA, the Agitator System generates an axial oscillating motion
(cyclical tension) to help free the stuck object. This oscillating motion is activated by
circulation of the wellbore fluid: as the wellbore fluid is circulated, the Agitator tool
generates a pressure pulse wave. This pressure wave enters the shock tool and acts on
the piston area within the tool, stroking the shock tool. This axial (along the pipe, not
side-to-side) oscillating motion is transmitted through the catch tool to the stuck object,
helping to vibrate it loose.
Features:
• Easily integrated into Fishing BHA
• Can be used with standard NOV fishing equipment: Catch Tools, Jar, Intensifier™,
Bumper Sub, Safety Joint, etc.
• Available at most NOV service locations worldwide
* NOV Engineering can provide recommendation for flow rate to maximize loosening effect on the stuck object.
** Higher temperature ratings are available upon request.
*** Actual operational pressure drop will depend on flow rate. This can be estimated in pre-job planning.

Fishing of stuck pipe – Drilling BHAs, cleanout assemblies, etc.
Challenge:
• Stuck BHAs are a costly problem, causing significant NPT (Non-Productive Time)
• Expensive Lost-In-Hole charges and the additional costs of cementing and sidetracking
• Differential sticking / mechanical sticking / pack-offs / stuck in cuttings
• Challenging well profiles
Solution:
The Agitator System has been used successfully in dozens of f ishing jobs with a high rate of
success, even in applications where conventional fishing attempts over several days had been
unsuccessful. The system is proven to greatly increase the likelihood of BHA retrieval in
difficult conditions.
Note: the Agitator System can also be used while drilling, to prevent differential
sticking/pack-offs/stuck in cuttings.
Benets:
• Gentle oscillation of stuck BHA reduces friction
• Improves overpull transfer from surface
• Turns static sticking into dynamic sticking
• Increases sliding ROP in drilling applications • Improves toolface control & reduces Stick-slip
• Extends step-out capability
• Significantly improves directional control

Casing Pulling – Plug & Abandon, Slot Retrieval, Stuck Casing
Challenge:
• Significant cost savings can be realized by retrieving casing from P&A wells
• Conventional overpull and jarring has limited effectiveness in retrieving casing
Solution:
The Agitator System has been used successfully in dozens of casing pulling runs, in various
sizes. The Agitator System in integrated into the Casing Retrieval BHA, incorporating a
circulating sub to allow circulation above the spear and packoff assembly. The Agitator System
has also been used at surface, to retrieve casing which became differentially stuck while
being run into the drilled wellbore.
Success with 9 5/8” Casing Pulling - StatoilHydro, Norway, Q1 2012:
“StatoilHydro had a very positive experience from the use of the Agitator System on
Gullfaks B. The verification came after the first trial when pulling and jarring had shown
no progress. The Agitator System was then operated and the fish came free. The Agitator
System was thereafter included in all the following pulling operations in B-14A.”

The Agitator™ System provides an incredibly effective new patented capability to free objects
stuck downhole, such as drilling BHAs, cleanout assemblies, casing, liners, electricsubmersible pumps, and gravel packed sand screens.
Conventional fishing BHA’s and fishing techniques to recover lost BHA’s or other stuck
objects downhole are generally limited to either applying overpull or jarring to free the object.
When added to the Fishing BHA, the Agitator System provides an additional loosening
action which can greatly improve the likelihood of retrieving the stuck object: Axial
oscillating motion.
This functionality is complementary to the Fishing Jar, and both are used in the process of
freeing the stuck object. Whereas jarring generates a large single impact force, the Agitator
System generates a smaller force, but at a much higher frequency. By inducing an
oscillating motion in the stuck object, it loosens the contact with the formation and helps
to literally “wiggle it free.”
