API (American Petroleum Institute)
API classifies lubricants according to their engine performance. This classification is based upon ratings, such as engine type, operative conditions, maintenance intervals, fuel etc. It is divided into two categories: SX – for gasoline engines; CY – for diesel enginesin which X and Y are progressive alphabetical letters indicating subsequent updating.

API CI-4 for diesel engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards which are operated with low sulfur diesel (max. 0,5%w). Valid as from 3/2003.
ACEA Sequences
2004 the new ACEA sequences came into effect (Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles). They define the minimum performance standards of engine oils and the new classes, which are split into performance categories:
Ax/Bx: gasoline and light duty diesel engines Cx: engines with after treatment devices Ex: heavy duty diesel engines
After the letter corresponding to the class a number is defined for the performance category. With the 2004 release the A and B categories have been combined to the respective A/B categories. only ACEA sequences from the 2004 release can be written with the forward slash.

E2 General purpose oil for naturally aspirated and turbocharged heavy duty diesel engines, medium to heavy duty cycles and mostly normal oil drain intervals (will soon expire).
E4 Stay-in-grade oil for high performance diesel engines meeting Euro 1, Euro 2, Euro 3 and Euro 4 emission requirements, without particulate filter, but with exhaust gas recirculation system (EGr) and fitted with SCr after treatment system. oils for significantly extended oil drain intervals.
E6 Stay-in-grade oils for high performance diesel engines meeting current emission requirements, suited for after treatment systems with particulate filter and for significantly extended oil drain intervals at severe operating conditions.
E7 Stable stay-in-grade oils with the same usage conditions as E6, but with more severe tests as far as wear and deposits are concerned, especially in turbocharger. Improved soot handling. Not suited for particulate filter.
E9 Stay-in-grade oils for high performance diesel engines, suited for after treatment systems with particulate filter, viscosity class SAE 15W40, based on Group II-oils.
