As I pondered what to share in the December issue of “Aging Elements” many of the usual topics crossed my mind, but by December you probably have heard enough about politics, policy and funding issues to hold you until January 2016. So, when a story about an individual who has received a hand up from PAA came across my desk, it helped me pause and reflect on what is really important in life. I hope you experience the same feeling.

Meet Marcus*, a 58-year old husband, father and grandfather who lives in Williamsburg and whose life has changed because of the opportunities the RIDES transportation program has given him. In 2012, a freak bicycle accident caused a severe spinal cord injury, leaving Marcus to be confined to a wheelchair with minimal use of his hands. His prognosis for being able to walk again was slim, but with his positive attitude and a goal, Marcus began physical therapy at Sentara Physical Therapy at the YMCA in Williamsburg. Because of his mobility issues and limited availability for transportation by his family, Marcus called PAA and arranged for a van 3x’s a week to his appointments. At the beginning of 2015, Marcus reached his first goal- to be standing upright with the use of a walker. The RIDES transportation program has provided accessibility for therapy and has given Marcus a new outlook on life. His next goal is to walk freely without the use of any device. “You never know what’s going to happen in life. Just love the one you’re with and enjoy life to its fullest.”

With the stories we hear of people like Marcus that our services directly effect, we also realize that we cannot do this alone. As a 501-3(c) charitable organization, we rely on outside sources to continue to meet the needs. If you are trying to decide where to make your holiday donation this year, please keep PAA in mind. You Still Remember Your Best Love, No Matter How Many Years go ByIn 1961, White met a man by the name of Allen Ludden, who was the host of a popular game show called Password. Immediately smitten, she dated him for two years...but rejected his first two proposals. She finally accepted in 1963 and was married to him until his death in 1981 of stomach cancer. Ludden made such a strong impression on her that she never remarried, telling Larry King "Once you've had the best, who needs the rest? I made two mistakes before Allen, but the love of your life doesn't come along in every life, so I am very grateful that I found him."

Communication is Always PossibleWhether you're an intellectual biped or furry gorilla, you both have the ability to tell others what you want and need and pick up on that from others.

There Doesn't Have to be Such a Thing as RetirementWhite has no plans to hang up the hat — ever. She really enjoys what she does and finds a lot of fulfilment out of it, and is loathe to give up that part of her identity. In fact, she plans on working until she keels over from it: "“Retire? I’m not sure the meaning of that word, I hear it once in a while, out there somebody did it. But no. I’m going to die in the saddle.”

There's Beauty in Every AgeYou may not have the body you did in your 20s, but that's a good thing. Your mind has grown to appreciate what's really important in life, and it's definitely not how you look in a bikini. What is important, though, is the respect and love you have for yourself, and always knowing you have something to offer the world. Or, in White's words, "I may be a senior, but so what? I'm still hot."

Seniors and Young People Have a Special RelationshipThe two-generation gap is the perfect one because there's just enough separation that neither tells the other what to do, and there are enough years between them to make for really valuable conversations. Young people can pick up on the wise life lessons of seniors, while seniors get the inside scoop on what's hot in the future from their younger counterparts.

Next time you ponder what it means to become older, think back to Betty White and how gracefully she's grown into it. It can be one of the best times of your life if you just let it, and go along for the ride. /w

PAA Partners with Senior Advocate

Senior Advocate and the Peninsula Agency on Aging (PAA) are excited to partner with the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce (VPCC) to launch a new networking group called the Peninsula Chamber Senior Advocate Roundtable.

The Peninsula Chamber Senior Advocate Roundtable will meet monthly beginning February 17, 2016, and will be held the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 11:30AM – 1:00PM at the VPCC Office (21 Enterprise Pkwy, #100, Hampton.)

The mission of the Peninsula Chamber Senior Advocate Roundtable is to share information about local services for older adults, age 55+, with businesses and organizations, and to help develop long term relationships between its members, for both educational and referral purposes. All businesses are invited to attend one meeting and will need to have a paid VPCC membership to continue attending meetings and to become a full member of the Peninsula Chamber Senior Advocate Roundtable. Full members will receive monthly contact lists of all members and will also have the opportunity to provide a 15 minute presentation to the group.

After many years of ideas and discussions, a plan is evolving to better serve the transportation needs of seniors in the Greater Williamsburg area. The Peninsula Agency on Aging, Williamsburg Faith in Action, and the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority are partnering to establish a one-call transportation system. A One-Call Center will allow customers to schedule rides for multiple providers through one phone call and enable customers to receive information about transportation services available in the community. Such a center would allow for a more efficient use of community transportation resources and simply the process seniors must currently go through to schedule their needed rides.

The overall benefits of this system would be to achieve efficiencies through fully coordinated scheduling, improve services for the community, build on existing organizational structures and technology, provide the foundation for other efforts to expand mobility, reduce duplication of services, and help the community prepare for future demands for transportation services. The projected number of rides on specialized transportation services will dramatically increase in the coming years with more people needing various transportation options, i.e. retirees and people of various income levels.

The three partners have been working the past six months with the KFH Group, a consulting firm that specializes in the transportation field, to develop and finalize a One-Call system. This work has been accomplished with the tremendous support from the Williamsburg Health Foundation and their staff. A final plan for the project is expected by February 2016 with hopes that initial implementation can begin by late 2016. Community support has been solicited during this process with very favorable results. This is an exciting time for the three partners as they all work towards a single goal: helping reduce transportation as a barrier to accessing key community services in the Greater Williamsburg area.
