Scaled AgileIntroduction to SAFe, Bimodal and Hybrid
Before Scaled Agile there was…
Digital Transformation requires a bimodal approach
Marathon running, long cycles and waterfall approach
Sprinting, short cycles, agile approach
Hybrid mode e.g. is when both modesare used within one program
Mode 1
Mode 2
Gartner and bimodal (2014)
Traditional PPM Approach
1. Centralized Control
2. Project Overload
3. Detailed Project Plans
4. Centralized Annual Planning
5. Work Breakdown Structure
6. Project-Based funding and control
7. Waterfall milestones
Lean-Agile Approach
1. Decentralized decision-making
2. Demand management and continuous value
3. Epic only business cases
4. Rolling-wave planning
5. Agile estimating and planning
6. Agile budgeting and Release Trains

Hybrid Agile with PMO Gartner Bimodal Scaled Agile
Most common scenario is
some teams are agile and
some traditional but portfolio
management is traditional
(including hybrid)
For some, the portfolios are
managed in a traditional
fashion but all teams are agile
Gartner recommends that
organizations bucket projects
based on best fit
Many organizations aspire to
achieve true top-to-bottom
enterprise agility e.g. using
Scaled Agile Framework
Governance
Known tools
Acknowledge the existence and need of both approaches
Use a framework for the change such as Scaled Agile (SAFe)*
Size it according to your needs
- 3 level SAFe (recommended)
- 4 level SAFe

Key SAFe definitions
EPICS (in PPM)
A business case
Epics are containers for significant initiatives with high impact and cost. They are comparable to a business case. They have a cost and require approval.
Epics are typically defined on the following levels
• Business
• Portfolio
• Program
VALUE STREAM(in PPM)
Top down portfolio
allocation
A Value Stream is a sequence of activities intended to produce a consistent set of deliverables of value to customers for a long time
Questions to identify value streams
• What products and services does the enterprise deliver?
• How do the customers view the flow of value to them?
• What current initiatives have 30-50-70 or more devs and testers working together already, or have a high degree of interdependencies of their features and components?
