Page 1 Aggie News Scholarship Fund & Membership Challenge Grant We have good news and we have bad news on the 2012-2013 Challenge Grant. The bad news is that we only received five new memberships so there will be no matching grant for new memberships. The good news is that we received a total of $4,390 in donations for the scholarship fund during the Challenge Grant period. We failed to reach our goal of $5,000 in scholarship fund donations but the amount received was substantial. Because of this, our generous anonymous donor has indicated that they will be awarding us with the total amount of $5,000 as a matching grant. We wish to thank each and every one of our donors for their generosity in supporting the Challenge Grant campaign. This will certainly help to build a healthy scholarship fund to provide a helping hand to the many worthy students who apply. This year we received 57 applications from students for the four scholarships we offered for 2013 so it is clear the need is there. Important Notices New Newsletter Distribution Policy For the last 16 years the alumni association has provided free copies of the alumni newsletter to anyone who was registered with the association whether they paid membership dues or not. If we had a valid current mailing address we would send out the newsletter. Over the years the cost of printing and postage has gone up but paid memberships have not in- creased. Membership dues are used to finance the alumni web site, our office expenses and to fi- nance the alumni newsletter. Another added expense we have run into is the in- creasing number of alumnus who have failed to notify us of an address change. When this happens their newsletter is returned by the Post Office and the cost of printing and mailing is lost. We have received numerous comments about how much people enjoy receiving the newsletter and how it keeps them informed about activities, news about the school, news about former classmates and news about any scheduled reunions and alum- ni functions. Scholarship Fund & Membership Challenge GrantWe have good news and we have bad news on the2012-2013 Challenge Grant.

The bad news is that we only received five newmemberships so there will be no matching grantfor new memberships.

The good news is that we received a total of $4,390in donations for the scholarship fund during theChallenge Grant period. We failed to reach ourgoal of $5,000 in scholarship fund donations butthe amount received was substantial. Because ofthis, our generous anonymous donor has indicatedthat they will be awarding us with the totalamount of $5,000 as a matching grant.

We wish to thank each and every one of our donorsfor their generosity in supporting the ChallengeGrant campaign. This will certainly help to build ahealthy scholarship fund to provide a helpinghand to the many worthy students who apply. Thisyear we received 57 applications from students forthe four scholarships we offered for 2013 so it isclear the need is there.

New Newsletter Distribution Policy(Continued)

Unfortunately, the interest in the newsletter has notresulted in any increase in paid memberships to sup-port its publication so it has become necessary to makesome changes with the newsletter distribution policy. We have tried to continue sending out the newsletter toeveryone over the last 16 years but can no longer con-tinue to do so.

Beginning with the next issue (January 2014), thenewsletter will only be sent to alumnus who have pro-vided support through paid memberships in the alumniassociation at some time during the last 15 years. Keep-ing our mailing address list up to date will be very im-portant. Please try to remember to let us know if youchange your e-mail address or your postal mailing ad-dress. Without a current address your newsletter cannot be delivered.

In addition, to further reduce publication costs we willbe delivering newsletters via e-mail to those who havee-mail addresses. An advantage to e-mail delivery isthat in addition to saving on printing and postage theycan be published in full color.

Membership & Donation FormsWhen filling out a membership & donation form, please be sure to fill in the e-mail address line if youhave one. If we have an e-mail address it saves the costof mailing out donation receipts.

100 Year Anniversary2013 marks the 100th year of Essex Aggie’s exis-tence. For 100 years the Aggie has graduated thou-sands of special people from this special school.

Why is Essex Aggie special? There are many thingsthat set the Aggie apart from most high schools. Theschool has always had a dedicated group of staff andteachers who really care about their students and doeverything they can to ensure that their students areprepared to move on to the rest of their lives. Withthe learning facilities spread out over 166 acres stu-dents get to experience an environment far differentthan most high schools. Walking to class may in-volve considerable time and effort unlike mostschools where students just move from room to roomwithin one large building. The school’s theme of

“Learn by doing” has separated it from the normaltraining found in most other schools.

Throughout the school’s 100 year history there havebeen many changes to reflect the changing need forlearning. In the early years heavy emphasis wasplaced on supporting the poultry, dairy, floricultureand homemaking fields. As need changes progressedthe Animal Science department developed studies inEquine Science, Veterinary Technology, and Com-panion Animal skills.

The Plant Science department developed up to datecourses in Greenhouse Management & Floriculture,Landscape and Turf Management, and Arboriculture.

The Environmental Science Department providedtechnical and college preparatory skills necessary foremployment in the competitive environmental sci-ence field.

As the courses of study changed so did the school’sname. The Essex County Agricultural School and theEssex County Home Making School eventually be-came Essex Agricultural & Technical Institute. Laterthe Essex Agricultural & Technical Institute (CollegeDivision) was added. Most recently the school’sname became Essex Agricultural & Technical HighSchool.

And now a new era will begin

The campus will look quite different in the future asthe Aggie attempts to keep in stride with the chang-ing needs of the community. The $134 million EssexNorth Shore Agricultural and Technical High Schoolwill be four small schools within a school with anenrollment of 1,440 students.
