1 Person, 2 Hats: Coaching SMEs to be Expert Learning FacilitatorsPresented by Greg Owen-Boger

Bringing Subject Matter Experts into the training process can bring credibility, depth and enterprise-wide perspective. It can also be frustrating for designers, co-facilitators, and learners because their expertise – without proper guidance – rarely leads to effective learning.

The reason for this is that SMEs have learned to think about what they do from a single perspective. As trainers they need to approach it from a broader one. While

Talk to the Elephant: Design for Behavior ChangePresented by Julie Dirksen

Frequently, learning design is about showing people how to do the right things, but actually getting them to change behavior can be another challenge. It’s particularly challenging to get people to change those intractable habits and behaviors that we all struggle to avoid, despite the wealth of available information about better choices.

This means that, as design professionals, we need to know all we can about designing for real behavior change, including using techniques from the fields of neuroscience, behavioral economics, behavioral psychology, persuasive technology, user experience, and even game design.

In this session, you will learn:

•Howtoidentifyandunderstandthebarrierstobehaviorchange. • Waystodesignsolutionsthatdon’tjustinformlearners,butinspire behavior change. • Howtousespecificmodelsandtechniquesfordesigningachangeeffort.

Flex Your Creative Muscle: Use It or Lose It!Presented by Amy Climer

Creativity seems like it should be so simple, but it is often a challenge to bring creative ideas and projects into an organization. This challenge is partly due to the unique interaction between creativity, risk taking, and trust. Sharing and implementing creative ideas requires taking a risk and we are more likely to do this with people we trust. Additionally, it also requires trust and risk-taking to say “yes” to other people’s creative ideas. Understanding how these concepts relate can help you be more creative in your organization and bring out creativity in others. We’ll explore these concepts through interactive activities, group discussion, and videos.

Say Hello to the Self-Managed LearnerPresented by Dave Meier

Weintrainingdotoomuchforlearners.Oneofthedeeplyembeddedbutfalsebeliefs about training is that training is something we need to do to people. Training departments arrange for people to “take” courses like they take prescription medicine, specifying the what, why, and how of their learning. Then the poor learners are dosed with PowerPoint slides (electronic chloroform) to dull their minds and make their learning ineffective. The truth is that people learn best when they control more of theirownlearning.Ourroleastrainers, then, istoinitiatealearningprocess, getout of the way, and turn people loose to learn in all directions using everything and everyone in and out of the workplace to make their learning fun, engaging, and effective.Inthiskeynoteyou’llreceiveacopyof“TheAcceleratedLearningJiffyGuide to Effective Presentations” and you’ll work with a small team of your peers to mine from it ideas of what you might do to get your learner to take charge of their learning and to do what they need to do in order to improve their learning.

Assumptions Gone Awry: Mobile Learning for Baby-Boomers & the Silent GenerationPresented by Marlo Foltz & Kevin Smith

This session will address the stereotype of baby-boomers being uninterested in taking up mobile learning. As an example, CUNA’s directors who had previously tossed aside laptops, PCs, and cell phones provided for their use and professional development suddenly leaped the curve and took to the iPad enthusiastically due to its simplicity. This change revealed a gap in the market and a demand from a different generation than originally planned for. Baby-boomers look for quick, simple accesstomaterialsquickly,24/7.ButtheirexpectationsaboutmobilelearningandcourseaccesswerenotthesameasthoseofgenerationX,YandtheMillenials.Onone hand they had jumped the curve in terms of using the technology, on the other hand how they received the actual content hadn’t changed much. This required some adapting.

Storytelling: Narrative Techniques for LearningPresented by Julie Dirksen

Storytelling can be a powerful learning tool. Training professionals and instructional designers are frequently called upon to create scenarios or stories to support learning. Turning mundane topics into vivid and compelling narratives can be a difficult task. The quality of the instructional content is most effective when it leverages real world scenarios, but there are a lot of techniques that instructional designer can borrow from fiction writers to create sticky, compelling, memorable scenarios and more engaging simulations. Participants in this session will learn about concepts like the inciting incident, protagonist versus antagonist conflict, three-act structure, and other narrative techniques that can help bring simulations to life.

In this session, you will learn:

• Howtostructureacompellingscenariousingnarrativetechniquesfrom fiction and screenwriting.

• Howtomakescenariosvividbyshowinginsteadoftelling.

• Howandwhentousehumor,andwhattheresearchsaysabouthumor and memory.

Growing Your Most Valuable Asset: How Employee Engagement is the Best CurrencyPresented by Tina Hallis

Learn how your company can improve productivity, morale, and employee retention by training employees and leaders in scientifically based techniques that result in a more positive work culture that promotes increased employee engagement. Studies now confirm the strong connection between the level of employee engagement and the success of a company. As an example, companies with high and sustainable employee engagement levels have an average operating margin close to three times higher than those with low engagement levels (Towers Watson 2012). Scientifically supported methods for improving employee engagement are now available as a result of research in the exciting new field of positive psychology. In this presentation you will learn about these methods and how training both employees and leaders in scientifically based techniques can increase their ability to thrive and flourish at work and in life.

Participants will:

• Discoverwhyemployeeengagementisimportanttothesuccessof your company.

Whole-Body Learning: The Key to Exceptional LearningPresented by David Meier

We sit too much when we learn. And this can slow down, and even stop, our learning. Modern cognitive research has shown that when people use more of their whole bodies when they learn, their brain gets energized and their learning improves. In this session you’ll get more than 30 ideas for improving classroom, online, and workplace learning by getting learners to use more of their whole bodies when they learn. You’ll be inspired by what Apple, Intel, AT&T, and others have done to improve learning by getting learners more physically active. And you’ll work with a team of your peers to create your own list of whole-body learning ideas that you can apply immediately to one or more of your training programs.

In this sessions you’ll learn how to:

• Improvelearningeffectivenessbygettinglearners’physicallyactivewhile they learn.

• Turnboringpresentationsintoengaginglearningactivities.

A Step or a Leap: Moving Outside Your Comfort ZonePresented by Diane Hamilton

As learning and development professionals, we work to establish trust and intimacy withourclients(internal/external).Wecreatesafe,supportiveenvironments.Weare authentic. We provide support for and champion new behaviors and actions, including those involving risk taking and fear of failure.

While we can be exemplary at creating this relationship, we sometimes fall short when it comes to our own risk taking or fear of failure. It can be difficult to champion risk taking in others when we find ourselves stuck in our own comfort zone - afraid to push the boundaries and challenge our own perceived barriers.

It has been said that the greatest enemy to human potential is our comfort zone. This interactive session will help participants find their own comfort zone and determine ways to leave it behind.
