The Red Planet has fascinated humans for centuries, often with thoughts of Little Green Men. But so far, signs of life have eluded us. Why do we keep exploring Mars?

Astrophotography Talk7:45 PM – 8:30 PMSENITA A BALLROOM, MARC LEATHAM

The majority of Americans live their whole lives without ever seeing the Milky Way and far fewer ever get the chance to explore the stars for themselves. This presentation will show what it takes to see the deep cosmos from your own backyard. With recent technological advancements and blossoming consumer markets, learn how to view the Deep Cosmos for yourself!

Exploring Red Planets and Metal Worlds: How JPL Turns Dreams into Reality – Closing Keynote5:10 PM – 6:10 PMLead Systems Engineer - Psyche mission, DAVID OH

From the Curiosity Mars rover to the Cassini orbiter at Saturn, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has a long history creating, building and flying missions that explore our solar system. In January 2017, Psyche, a mission led by Arizona State University (ASU) and managed by JPL, was selected as the latest addition to NASA’s Discovery program. Psyche will explore a unique body in our solar system: a 200 km diameter world made almost entirely of metal. David Oh will describe how JPL works with teams of scientists and engineers to create these unique missions, taking wild ideas from initial conception through development to the decision to fund for flight.

Saturday, Track AAmerica In Space – Saturday Opening Keynote9:00 AM – 9:45 AMED GIBSON

Ed presents his first-hand observations of America’s entry into Space from Al Shepard’s first Mercury flight through our lunar landings, Ed’s world record setting flight on Skylab III, our 135 Space Shuttle flights, the development and use of our currently flying International Space Station and today’s controversial plans for our future outward expansion into our Solar System. America’s entry into space has seen many triumphs and losses, some leaders with the required vision, courage and commitment and some without. A rational human being would not proceed in this manner. However, we live in a democracy where reason is not always in control.

The Overview Effect9:45 AM – 10:30 AMLORETTA WHITESIDES

Nov 9 is Carl Sagan Day! Have you ever wondered what the Astronaut and cosmonauts themselves have said about what space is like? Do you hope that space has the power to bring out the best in us and allow us to live in a sci fi future? Do you want to know how to best prepare yourself to bring about that future? Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear directly from one of the architects of our future in space, Loretta Whitesides.
