“Set dancing” Stage

We are going to dance in the "set": the

characteristics Irish quadrilles, reported

in vogue with the revival of the 80's, and now widely

danced in Ireland, it is become a hobby for many young

and less young people. It is the opportunity to have fun

and learn more about sets and dancing styles directly

from one of the most famous masters of Ireland. Pat

Murphy. All the Stage are open to all those who already

have a basic knowledge of Irish dancing or those with

only some experience of dance in general (folk, classical,

etc...)

“Sean Nós ” Stage

The amusing and allegro Sean Nós style steps will be

taught. Sean Nós is a kind of solo dancing, a traditional

Irish step from the Connemara. All people who got at

least a bit of Irish dance experience can attend to the

stage.

Pat Murphy

Pat Murphy was born in Upperchurch, County Tipperary. His first contact with set dancing was in his own home, where the Ballycommon set and the Castle set were danced. He learned to play the accordion from his father, Jack, who played locally at house dances for much of his life. Music has been one of the joys of his life since then. Over the years until around 1980 he sometimes played for competition dan-cers, set, céilí and solo step dancers. He met Jack Slattery then through Jack he became in the set revival scene and soon he was teaching a local class where he lived in Dublin. Sometime later Pat met and became friendly with Connie Ryan who was the major set dancing teacher at this time and as he attended Connie’s classes and workshops, he be-gan to travel more and at some stage he was asked to teach workshops - weekend classes in other areas himself. Gra-dually his life became busier and this trend continues. Up to now Pat has written many books where sets are collected. With some friends like the Connie Ryan’s Slievenamon Dan-cers, Matt Cunningham and others, have been producing series of DVD about Set Dancing and Two Hand or Couple Dances. He has been teaching Irish dancing around the world as in Japan, in New Zealand, in North America, in England and mainland Europe.

Úna Ní Fhlatharta

Úna Ní Fhlatharta is a Sean-nós dancer from Maynooth in Co Kildare. She took up Irish dancing at 5 years of age with CCÉ Léim an Bhradáin, Co Kil-dare progressing quickly to Step Danc-ing and Set Dancing. In her teenage years she was introduced to the Sean-nós style of dancing while attending some of the many Summer Schools throughout the country. She won the Féile Pan Cheilteach in 2013 and the All-Ireland Senior Sean-Nós Dancing competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in 2011 and took 2nd place at the Senior Sean-nós dancing competition at Oireachtas na Samhna 2012. From a musical family, Úna has been immersed in traditional Irish music and culture. A native Irish speaker, Úna also plays the Uilleann Pipes, the Tin Whistle and Bodhrán. A Primary School teacher by pro-fession, Úna teaches dancing in her school and throughout the Kildare region. She is a regular performer at the Belve-dere Hotels’ weekly Irish night in Dublin City.

The Ivy House Céilí band

The Ivy House band consists of Jonathan Roche on Accordion, MJ McMahon on Guitar and Jenny Dillon on Fiddle. They have been together since January 2012, Jonathan and MJ play regular pub sessions every Friday and Sunday in Kildare and Dublin, Ireland where they are frequently joined by Jenny when she has free time from her full time primary teaching job and giving music lessons. As a band, they have performed for dancers for the Saint Patricks day festival in Blackpool, England with Enjoy Travel in March 2012, and also in Enniscrone Sligo for ceile dancers also with Enjoy Travel. The Ivy House band produce a powerful and dynamic overall sound, enriched by the combination of individual styles and a shared appre-ciation of the music of North Kerry and Jonathan's love of polkas and slides. Jonathan Roche hails from Brosna, a small parish in the Sliabh Luachra area of North Kerry steeped in a rich musical tradition. From an early age Jonathan displayed a keen interest in traditional Irish music, the accordion in particular, having spent many after-noons "pulling and tearing" at an old battered hohner in his grandfather’s attic!At the tender age of 8 years, Jonathan attended his first music class in Brosna under the renowned tutelage of Ceci-lia Regan. With a great help from a number of local accordion players, and in particular his neighbour Joe Mulcahy who was cal-led to on a weekly basis for help with tunes, he started to make some progress and before too long something that resembled a Jig emer-ged from the reeds. In the following years, Jonathan spent time lear-ning from local accordion players Donal De Barra and Willie Lar-kin, both of whom had a huge influence on his style of playing. Du-ring his teenage years he was a regular competitor in the fleadh ceoils, and went on to capture two All-Irelands on the melodeon and a Munster title on the two row button accordion. These successes brought Jonathan to the attention of a number of dance shows, and lead to summer tours of Australia and Asia with "Spirit of Ireland". Further spells were spent playing with renowned productions such as "Ragús" and "To Dance on the Moon", the highlights of which were trips to Dubai and playing to a full house in the renowned Vi-car Street venue in Dublin. Jenny Dillon is a fiddle player from County Kildare. She began learning music at eight years of age. After a short time she began competing in the Fleadh Cheoil music competitions where she won three All-Ireland titles for solo and duet playing. Her love of Irish music and culture spurred her on to studying music and Irish in Uni-versity College Cork. Jenny now teaches and performs music around the Leinster area. Her style of playing is personal yet influenced by a diversity of musicians within the Irish tradition. Mj McMahon was born and raised in East Co. Clare. From an early age he played percussion and bódhran and later in his teenage years, developed an interest for the guitar. In 2001 Mj moved to Limerick where he studied traditional Irish music at University Li-merick. Here, he learnt under the tutelage of guitar masters Steve Cooney, Ian Carr, Chris Kelly, amongst many others. Since comple-ting his Masters ten years ago, MJ has toured Europe extensively with the Irish dance shows 'Celtic Legends' , 'Mystical Dance of Ireland' . He also regularly plays in the American production 'Emerald Beat' based in Bush Gardens, Florida. When MJ is at home in Maynooth, he teaches bódhran and guitar and enjoys learning the banjo!
