October 13, 2016 IDEP and PPGH Training Evaluation Results

Response rate: 55/90 = 61.1%

1. I found today’s training to be valuable:

Strongly Agree – 28/55 = 51% Agree – 25/55 = 45% Neutral – 1/55 = 1.8% Disagree – 1/55 = 1.8% Strongly Disagree – 0

2. What were you hoping was covered in this training that wasn’t discussed? • I’m new to this line of work, so this was very informing • How to remedy (specifically) the illicit discharges – as in what methods are used to clear

them • More in depth coverage of illicit connections • More detailed evidence from case studies or charts representing the most harmful or

most common pollutants and where they are found • To understand what businesses and residents try to dispose of unwanted pollutants into

the environment • Public awareness – best ways to inform the public of these issues • Quick solutions to some problems • Go over proper secondary containment and MIOSHA secondary labeling • Just a little regarding fixes for certain types of illicit discharge

3. Do you plan to implement the recommended practices?

Y: 44/55 = 80% N: (already implement) – 2/55 = 3.6% N: 1/55 = 1.8%

• If so, which ones? • No mow buffer zones/Buffers – 5 responses • Whatever the boss will allow/depends on upper management – 2 responses • Storm drain cleaning • Most • All – 2 responses • Not feeding wildlife • Good housekeeping practices – 3 responses • Regular checks of stormwater • Paying attention to illicit discharges and more aware to report any issues – 2

responses

Page 7: AGENDA - Oakland County, Michigan€¢ Quick solutions to some problems ... • Parking lot sweeping/Street sweeping practices ... • Seminar was very well explained

• Proper disposal of polluting materials • Maintenance agreements for private detention/retention basins – 3 responses • Install inlet filters in CB near salt dome in the winter • Cold patch storage • Contractor education; distribute materials – 2 responses • Contractor oversight practice • Retention/detention pond maintenance practice • Time of sale ordinance for septic systems • Parking lot sweeping/Street sweeping practices – 2 responses • Already implementing in our city • Be more aware of sediment traps/practices used on construction sites (i.e. silt

fencing, check dams, etc.) • 3” mowing height • Maintenance and prevention of stormwater pollution of city facilities • Proper containment of stored barrels whether horizontal or vertical/getting

container off the floor – 2 responses • New maintenance protocols • Maintenance of storms at DPW yard • Dye test permits – obtain annually • Improve when we can • Installing concrete barriers for storage piles • Tighten up on good housekeeping practices • Check and update our labeling • Provide better access to spill kits and make sure employees know how to use

them • Verify storm and sanitary drains at facility • Cleaning of equipment • Share our IDEP info from permit to field staff • Shop champion to help make sure our shop is up to par

4. Most useful information provided:

• Detection/examples of illicit discharges - 11 responses • IDEP – specifically methods for sampling and testing • How to determine sources • Good housekeeping programs – 6 responses • All – 4 responses • Identification of what’s in water and what each one is • MDEQ Dye Permit process • I didn’t know anything about IDEP before today • Networking

Page 8: AGENDA - Oakland County, Michigan€¢ Quick solutions to some problems ... • Parking lot sweeping/Street sweeping practices ... • Seminar was very well explained

• Storm & sanitary system • Stormwater pollutes prevention maintenance • Ways to reduce a discharge • Familiarity of our existing issues • Variety of pollutants and images of pollutants • The tip card handed out prior to the lectures/brochure in IDEP vehicle is good to have! –

2 responses • Implementing preventative actions with dumping of polluted water/waste; what to be

aware of before it happens • Links/handouts were great – 3 responses • Always be aware of drain locations and be sure to know what type they are in case of a

mishap (storm or sanitary) • Pictures are always very helpful! • Rules on MS4 – 2 responses • How valuable our fresh water supply is and how little there is in relation to the total

amount of water we have on Earth • All info related to MDEQ requirements and permit • The intense discussion • Overall general awareness, website information my employees can access • Importance of preventing contamination

5. What could’ve been improved in the session:

• 2nd speaker had tons of knowledge, but it was harder to pay attention while she was speaking; recommend she walk around and read less of the slides

• Less monotone speaking • First speaker was very involved with class; second speaker was not; got kinda dull • Use less abbreviations when talking about a subject (confusion as to what presenter was

referring to when not familiar with subject) • Sample court cases or recent/upcoming legislation trends for MS4 management • Outside demonstration • Effects of pollutants in stormwater systems – long-term effects • Common “violations” or concerns seen on site evaluations • Show good, the bad and the ugly with real examples • More links to web info • Include printed sheets with slides in grids with info • Maybe discuss the harmful effects polluted stormwater may have on a community • Maybe some more on the impacts of industrial runoff • Show examples of proper realistic facilities • Ran out of coffee! More coffee – 2 responses • More quiche
