4. BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE PREVIOUS MEETINGS

4.1 YAM (Youth Arts and Music) Festival activities and artists

The Youth Services Officer discussed the activities and artists at the YAM Festival.

The Community Projects and Events Officer explained plans for street art at the YAM Festival and the possible location. The Youth Services Officer talked to members about including the YAG logo but done in different colours. The Youth Services Officer asked members about the most ‘iconic’ street art in Alice Springs. Georgia discussed having a more modern look to steer away from other exiting street art, like at K-mart and East Side. Hannah suggested contacting Tammy Allison, who created the Meeting Place street art, because of her experience working with youth. Georgia discussed the idea of having messaging.

4.2 YAG Fundraising for YAM Festival

The Youth Services Officer provided information on Saltbush but said that it has been difficult reaching them. Sam said that he could provide the Youth Services Officer other contact details for Saltbush. Hannah suggested that YAG members contact the organisation that we hope to fundraise for to understand what they want. Hannah also discussed the idea of fundraising for the Meeting Place as they are a youth organisation that is run by volunteers and do not currently get funding.

The YAG voted to fundraise for the Meeting Place, and if not, Saltbush and then the Gap Youth Centre.

Discussion ensued.

ACTION:The Youth Services Officer to follow up with Hannah about fundraising for the Meeting Place.

ACTION:The Youth Services Officer to follow up with Saltbush if the Meeting Place does not work.

4.3 Social Media Content Ideas for Facebook and Instagram

The Youth Services Officer asked YAG members for ideas for different social media content. Chelsea talked about having youth profiles, and posting more about the street art to get people excited. Hannah mentioned posting live videos and discussed further about pairing Facebook and Instagram posts together. Chelsea said she will send the Youth Services Officer something to post about on Facebook.

5.1 Jan Fleming and Sarah Brittle from Anglicare on ‘Making Alice Child Friendly’

Jan discussed her long-term project on ‘Making Alice Child Friendly’, and how she is trying to get as much data from people in Alice Springs to understand how to make Alice Springs a better place for future children. Jan discussed how she is doing online and hard-copy surveys, a word wall in the library and a community forum on the 12th of September from 5-6:30pm. They said that through the data they collect, it will assist in creating an accessible document for anyone to be able to read through.

Discussion ensued.

5.2 Bridget May Co-Chair of Alice Springs Community Bank Board

Bridget explained the function of a community bank board and discussed the benefits and responsibilities of joining and what it is like being a part of it. Deputy Mayor, Matt Paterson recommended the Youth Action Group to consider it as it is not an opportunity that every youth gets.

Discussion ensued.

6. OTHER BUSINESS

6.1 Youth Issues in Alice Springs

Sam discussed how we was recently in Darwin for the NT Youth Roundtable, and he is currently working with Office of Youth Affairs, who want to work with a young organisation (like the YAG) to know more about Alice Springs matters. Sam said he will provide the Youth Services Officer with contact details.

Hannah discussed the lack of a ‘youth hub’ and skate parks and the issue of how there should be a more accessible and visible skate park than the current one now which is not very good. Hannah also said that Council does not understand the culture of skating and that it has turned many skateboarders away. Hannah said that the BMX park is a huge place, but it is different from skating. Hannah was wondering why there is no consultation for the 'family park’ that was previously proposed and a similar approach of importance like the National Aboriginal Art Gallery. Hannah said that she was wondering why there is not more money that goes to support projects regarding youth culture like skate parks.

Chelsea discussed the issue of recycling in Alice Springs which Hannah and Sam agreed on and why there is only one bin and that there needs to be a waste management plan. Sam said that as a member of the youth roundtable he knows someone working on the project in the NT, but he’s unsure if it is also associated with Alice Springs. Sam also said that when he has friends from interstate come, they question why there is only the one bin in homes.

Discussion ensued.

ACTION:The Youth Services Officer to discuss with appropriate Council officers regarding the status of the proposed ‘family park’, what consultation has been done so far, and what opportunities there are for the YAG to help facilitate this if it moves ahead.

ACTION:The Youth Services Officer to update the YAG regarding waste management and recycling opportunities available at the next meeting.
