• The Multi-Year Smart Planner will eventually overwrite its contentsIt is not recommended to make it a standard part of the advising process.Think of it as a scratchpad for registration planning.

• What-If report will no longer use “planned” courses

• Transfer, completed, and in-progress courses will still be used• Unit totals will no longer include planned courses

TITLE 5: 40401. Election of Regulations

An undergraduate student remaining in attendance in regular sessions at any California State University campus, at any California community college, or any combination of California community colleges and campuses of The California State University may for purposes of meeting graduation requirements elect to meet the requirements in effect at the campus from which the student will graduate either:

1) at the time the student began such attendance, or

2) at the time of entrance to the campus, or

3) at the time of graduation.

*This governs GE and overall degree requirements – not major requirements.

TITLE 5: 40401. Election of Regulations

For purposes of this section “attendance” means attendance in at least one semester or two quarters each calendar year. Absence due to an approved educational leave or for attendance at another accredited institution of higher learning shall not be considered an interruption in attendance, if the absence does not exceed two years.

A campus may require a student changing his or her major or any minor field of study to complete the major or minor requirements in effect at the time of the change.

Quiz

Can students elect different GE and Major catalog years? YES!

Can students who do not have continuous enrollment retain

catalog rights to the year they first entered Cal State LA

and/or declared a major?NO!

Page 31: Agenda - Cal State LA · Agenda 1. Registration for Spring 2017 2. IAP Updates and College Scheduler. 3. Winter Session. 4. GE and Major Catalog. 5. Student Advising, Orientation,

What if a student does not have continuous enrollment and would like catalog rights other than those to which they are entitled?

Advisors should first work with students to determine why this request is being made and look for alternative solutions (requesting substitutions for discontinued and other courses).

If no alternative solution is available, advisors should consult with their Director of Student Success and Advising and/or their Associate Dean to determine whether it would be appropriate to submit a general academic petition to Undergraduate Studies.

Student Orientation, Advising and Registration - General Suggestions

Revisit on-line orientation content; coordinate content with information delivered at advising and registration sessions.

Revisit communication plan to improve the likelihood that students will read their emails. Consider including information about email communications in the on-line orientations.

Maximize orientation capacity – sessions were unevenly filled. Some sessions had few students; others had many students.

Schedule sessions and rooms as soon as possible; include Directors of Student Success and Advising in planning the orientation schedule and in scheduling rooms.

Freshmen and Transfer Orientation, Advising and Registration

Create a plan to address the situation of students who were admitted to one major but have since decided upon another major.

Consider mandatory on-line orientation for all transfer students.

Reconsider evening sessions for transfer advising. Critical enrollment services and department offices are open during the day to help solve problems.

Technical and other issues

o Review hold message. Students were confused by informational “hold” – although it is informational only, students think they are unable to register.

o ENGLISH: Revisit pre-requisites for English 1005a. Students who should be in 1010 signed up for ENGL 1005a.

o MATH: Provide every student with a complete list of the Math courses that are appropriate for their level and major.

o MATH AND ENGLISH: Consider changing the numbering of sections reserved for special populations so that the general population will not try to register for closed sections.

Steps Taken in 2016 to Improve Early Start:

1) Redesigned the Early Start website to make it more “student friendly,” as well as informative which included three new Early Start videos

2) Established an official Early Start Welcome Center (FYE)

3) Created the Early Start Email Communications Plan to deliver emails in a more

consistent, timely manner

4) Administered Math Placement Exams to eligible Early Start Math students

(41/42) for an additional opportunity to advance

5) Identified those students who needed Early Start but did not enroll, and created

a procedure for them to satisfy the mandatory requirement

Page 40: Agenda - Cal State LA · Agenda 1. Registration for Spring 2017 2. IAP Updates and College Scheduler. 3. Winter Session. 4. GE and Major Catalog. 5. Student Advising, Orientation,

Steps Taken and/or in Process to Improve 2017 Early Start:

• Early Start Coordinator/EAP Coordinator will continue to develop a procedure so students are more aware of their EAP status for Early Start, and Freshman Orientation/Registration.

• Review the communications plan to ensure that students receive the appropriate emails early (and earlier) and not too often.

• There were a number of technical issues that impacted the declaration/registration process. The Early Start Planning Committee will begin meeting early to review and implement necessary changes.

Summer 2016 Second Start

• For the first time we were able to identify students who needed Early Start but did not register, and create an additional opportunity: Second Start

Extended Early Start:

• FYE is developing a winter intersession Math 920/30 “Boot Camp” for those freshmen who do not pass fall 2016.

Page 42: Agenda - Cal State LA · Agenda 1. Registration for Spring 2017 2. IAP Updates and College Scheduler. 3. Winter Session. 4. GE and Major Catalog. 5. Student Advising, Orientation,

2016 Freshmen Registration:

There was a coordinated effort to review/revise Freshmen Orientation/Registration to help facilitate advisement and

subsequent registration.

Page 43: Agenda - Cal State LA · Agenda 1. Registration for Spring 2017 2. IAP Updates and College Scheduler. 3. Winter Session. 4. GE and Major Catalog. 5. Student Advising, Orientation,

Steps Taken and/or in Process to Improve Advising for 2017 Freshmen Registration:

• Continue to review/revise the EAP student status procedure for appropriate advisement for fall English and Math course placement

• Collaborate with the Math Department to develop a procedure to identify the closed math sections to facilitate advisement and reduce registration confusion

• Continue to review/revise the individual score letters for better clarity for advisement purposes
