• Stalin (USSR), Churchill (GB), and Roosevelt (US) meet
• Decision: British, French, American, and Soviet forces would control a part of Germany, Stalin had the right to control governments in Eastern Europe
Effects of WWII
• Death toll: 38 million in Europe, 22 million Soviets, 6 million Jews dead
• Nuremburg Trials– punished Nazi leaders for “crimes against humanity”
• Balfour Declaration• Idea of creating a homeland for the Jews after WII with the establishment of
Israel• Based on Zionism – Jewish nationalism
Paris Peace Treaty - 1947• Winning allies would have influence and control over defeated
axis powers
• Reparations established
• Borders were changed • African borders were set along imperial lines• No consideration for ethnic divisions
Effects of WWII• Nations are occupied – • West Germany and Japan were controlled by Western nations (France, GB,
US) • wanted to promote democracy and capitalism (free market)
• Eastern Europe controlled by Soviet Union• Wanted to promote communism
• United Nations – purpose to provide a place to discuss world problems and develop solutions• Replaced League of Nations• Still in place today, but still no enforcement power
Divisions• The Eastern European countries that the Soviet Union gains control of will become
known as satellite countries

Other Effects• World has seen power of “the bomb”
