TEACHING EXCELLENCE TRACK Using Video or Films for Critical Thinking and Active Learning in the Classroom J1.208

Presenter: Sarah Bishop Merrill New research shows that learners who see a video prior to testing remember less on the subject matter than those who see still images and text about topics of moral concern in the news. Those of us who use film, video clips, or links to carefully selected audio-visual and news-material related to our course content and learning objectives worry that the learning may be impeded by technological glitches or a sudden lack of audio-visual resources in our classroom technology armamentarium since most classrooms will no longer have working DVD players. This session will demonstrate how Study Questions posted in advance, and assessment use of one or two challenging DVDs during the semester, to show logical fallacies and ethical challenges (E.g., _ENRON: The Smartest Guys in the Room__ or Al Gore's _An Inconvenient Truth_ showing 5 "misconceptions/fallacies") can facilitate active learning greatly, evidenced in student success.

The Journey of an Essay: Improving Students’ Writing Through Peer Revision and Writing as a Process

J1.402

Presenter: Caleb Camacho It is imperative that our students discover their academic voice, but improving students’ academic writing begins by acknowledging that writing (an essay, report, argument, researched paper, etc.) requires a process; multiple drafts are to be expected. By incorporating peer-revision techniques in your classroom - along with essay revisions through such things as "Smarthinking" via Blackboard and/or CLE visits - your student-writers will enhance their skills, ameliorate their time-management, and boost their confidence when faced with summative assessments of major, written projects of any length and for any field in STC's academia.
