#ALICESPRINGS disposable coffee cups - 3 month marketing campaign

Overview:

At the October Tourism, Events and Promotions Committee it was discussed to research reusable cups or bio degradable cups. Further to this, research the demographics of coffee drinkers to determine the uptake of #ALICESPRINGS on social media. The committee also requested to investigate potential buy in from local cafes.

Recommendation:

After discussions with local cafe owners (see attached questionnaire and answers) it is recommended that the Committee select a reusable cup for the #AliceSprings marketing campaign.

Supporting notes:

Majority of cafe owners expressed their interest in purchasing reusable cups from Council to then on-sell to their customers. Many reusable cup manufacturing companies have a large minimum order quantity. By Council purchasing the bulk quantity, it then allows local businesses to order a smaller and more manageable quantity of cups. It also promotes a more environmentally friendly option to consumers in the region.

Many outlets currently receive their disposable coffee cups through their selected coffee brand. Creating a #Alice Springs disposable cup could interfere with their current cup branding.

The most popular cup sizes currently sold in outlets are small (8oz) and medium (12oz).There is a 240 minimum order required for each size for custom branded printing. Based on the 12 cafes interested (out of the 14 approached), this would require each cafe to order 20 of each size. There are also additional cafes in Alice Springs that may choose to participate which will then reduce the number we would need each cafe to order.

Final Costings: Quantities: 240 or 510 units

KeepCup for OrganisationsKEEPCUP.COM

KeepCup are the world's first barista standardreusable coffee cup. Now available in 5 sizes and in both plastic and glass, KeepCup is all about encouraging positive behaviour in a Feel good. Do good way.

We believe good actions create good habits, and that we are all driven by a common desire to act mindfully and positively.Through our own actions, we inspire others to be the change they wish to see in the world.

Believe in better. Salute the Reuser!

Our mission is to encourage the use of reusable cups. We do this by offering an innovative, sustainable alternative to disposables.

We offer our product in the context of a positive global campaign that strives to make a difference to how people think about convenience culture. We do this by engaging people in three key ways; Through love of coffee, those who care about the environment, and people who appreciate good design.

We've created a global brand and that has kick started the demise of the disposable.

Sustainability focusKeepCup is a certified B Corporation. B Corporation started in the US, with a belief that businesses should not just serve the interests of shareholders, but the environment, stakeholders and employees. B Corp is to businesses what Fair Trade certification is to coffee, so we are very proud of our status as a benefit organisation.

As a B Corp organisation, we are certified by the non-profit B Lab. It is independent and transparent evidence that we are the sort of organisation we say we are.

The environmental footprint of our products is really important to us, so we were committed to local manufacture. In 2012 we opened a warehouse in the UK and in March 2013 we opened in Los Angeles. Local presence means that we can begin to tell a local story in these markets, local assembly and local printing dramatically reduces the environmental footprint of the business.

Achievements in reducing disposable cup waste over the past six yearshave been difficult to quantify - how do you measure the impact of NOTdoing something?

Individuals and organisations can now visit http://reusehq.keepcup.com/ and pledge their reuse undertaking. Reuse HQ aggregates the results across organisations and countries to provide a snapshot of collective action. The impact of reuse from user submitted data - in energy, disposable cups, andlandfill.

Reuse HQ helps KeepCup customers and end users measure their impact, and engages and incentivises them to keep up the good work. KeepCup has designed an implementation program to support Reuse HQ within organizations and drive reuse. It's another opportunity for KeepCup to demonstrate commitment to our core mission - reducing disposable cup waste.

Why KeepCup?KeepCup is the world's first barista standard reusable cup.Purchasing a KeepCup for staff or students is a practical and easy way to reduce

waste and carbon emissions. If your campuses supply disposable cups to staff or

students, there are significant savings to be made in consumable expenditure and

waste disposal by implementing KeepCup. The KeepCup makes a clear statement

about the kind of educator and the kind of employer you are.

High visibility efforts, like KeepCup, have great potential to leverage the support and participation of students and staff in a wider sustainability program.

There is enough plastic in 20 disposable cups and lids to make one KeepCup Original. For KeepCup Brew we estimate break even to be as low as 10 uses compared to disposable cups.
