BACKGROUND OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

The 1700s in Britain

Most people lived on small plots of land.

Noble Estates Wealthy (rich) landowners and the royalty took more land for their huge farms called estates. They needed more poor people to work on them.

Cottage (Home) Industries.

Most people though still worked at home. They tried to produce everything they needed.

What did some poor people do in response?

Some poor people went to the cities looking for work and found jobs in factories.

Page 5: Agenda, 3/22/2011

WHY WAS BRITAIN THE FIRST TO INDUSTRIALIZE?

A large population of workers.

People left the estates and found jobs in new factories.

Entrepreneurs

Were businesspeople who were willing to open factories with their own money.

Natural Resources

Coal and iron were used to make steel for machines and vehicles. Coal was also used as a source of fuel. Water for energy and transportation.

Government assistance.

The government also passed laws to encourage British industry.

End results This caused Europe to be an industrial powerhouse. Remember today 75% of Europeans live in cities. Ever since, factories and industry became the world’s major economic activity.
