Recommendation:

Staff recommends City Council Members make appointments to the various commissions.

Background:

In 2005, Council voted to change the way appointments were made to all City boards, commissions, and committees. The new ordinance states that the term of an appointee will run concurrently with the appointing councilmember's term, and the term of the appointee will automatically terminate at the time the election results are certified by the City. (Calexico Municipal Code section 2.19.050).

Pursuant to section 2.19.010, each councilmember will appoint one member to each board, commission or committee. No ratification/approval by the entire Council is required. All commissions, boards and committees are now composed of only five members with the exception of the Parks , Recreation , Beautification & Senior Services Commission which consists of seven members. Five of the members are appointed by the individual council members and two are appointed by a vote of the entire council. The criteria for an appointee to hold office is listed below:

This is to serve as my Letter of Interest to serve on the Arts and Historical Commission at The City of

Calexico. With a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design and a Master's Degree in Digital Graphic Design, Art and

History have always been areas of interest.

My position as an Associate Professor at UABC Universidad Aut6noma de Baja California for 10 years, led me to

become a Media Relations Coordinator for their Architecture and Design Faculty (UABC Facultad de

Arquitectura y Diseiio). I have taken several courses on Art History, Art. Photography, Architecture, Painting,

among others.

When I started teaching I made Art History class into one fun, creative class giving it a current and innovative

approach. Students were able to learn the theoretical aspect of history but besides tests, partial projects were

an integral part of their evaluation. On these projects, students used their creativity to show what they learned

through art installations, exhibits, performances, murals, photography among other kinds of art or forms of

expression. I developed and worked in logistics for several projects linking the Faculty to our community. I

consider very important for the students to understand diversity in all its aspects, that is why this particular

projects involved working with Public Elementary Schools, Cycling community from Mexicali, Nonprofit

organizations and other prospects that we were able to help by linking a project to their needs. I founded

various Cultural and Educational events that got National recognition, such as conferences, art exhibits and

workshops.

I served as a Board Member at the Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center for one year and I am always looking

for ways to incorporate art and creativity into all my projects. (e.g. I won a National contest with a Community

Mural I painted in Calexico for H&M, art sessions, design at IV LGBT Resource Center, among other activities).

I am currently the Digital Media Production Specialist for El Centro Elementary School District and work closely

with District leaders and department/schools to execute a concept through to completion.

I am creative, proactive and always willing to give more than expected; but most importantly I am very

passionate about everything I do. I see beautiful sunny Calexico as a white canvas with so much potential, there

is a lot that can be done. I not only want to bring ideas to the table, I also want to make them happen. I have

been waiting for an opportunity like this at The City of Calexico, and I would be honored to be considered.

I am a visual artist with an extensive e hibit1on and curatorial history that currenUy teaches art at Imperial Valley College and SDSU-IV. where I am also the campus art gallery director.

My professional experience in the arts dates back to 2003, the year I obtained my MFA in Visual Arts . And even though I lived in Los Angeles for ten years after graduating, my artistic endeavors have always pointed back to the border region, more specifically, to Calexico and Mexicali , the cities where I was raised. In 2006, I co-founded the curatorial project MexiCah Biennial. a non-profit organization that has brought traditional art gallery exhibitions to local venues as well as public programming at the border, which highlights include a soccer match using the border fence as a midfield barrier (2010), and a vocal performance using two giant megaphones one on each side of the border fence (2019)- I worked with the Calexico Chamber of Commerce to secure the necessary permits for the realization of these two public events. In 2017, I was one of two artists in the Border Metamorphosis Binational Mural Committee that worked in the restoration and installation of the border fence segment placed at Rockwood Park , and in 2018, I collaborated with the city in "Calexico: From the early years through the 1990's", a historical photography exhibition that was part of the city's 110th anniversary events and that was hosted at Steppling Art Gallery, SDSU-IV, where I am director.

I am passionate about the arts and have a strong desire to see them thrive in the City of

Calexico. I am highly motivated, ambitious, intensely focused and I believe my experience as an exhibiting artist, curator of exhibitions and public events, and art instructor of the future generations of artists make me the ideal candidate for this position.

I Roxsanna, am interested and appreciated that Councilwoman Gloria Romo has appointed me to become apart of the Arts & Historical Commission. I believe that the city of Calexico has created a unique culture for many years with beautiful displays of artistic murals that represent our community. My bachelor's degree is in Art education and I am currently finishing my master's in fine arts. In my spare moment in time, I enjoy painting with oils and acrylics as a hobby. I also love teaching students how to create art as well it is something different and productive for them to do especially during this pandemic.

I enjoy working with anything that consists of art, it is another way of showing the community what our city represents along with our history. My name is Daniela Flores, a community and public health advocate and researcher. I am writing to formally express my interest in serving on the Calexico Planning Commission. I was raised in Calexico and have been a resident for 19 years.

As a public health professional and advocate, I have found myself serving my community in Calexico and around the Imperial Valley during the COVI D-19 pandemic and response . As a collective founder of the Imperial Valley Equity & Justice Coalition (IVEJC) , I serve as a volunteer community advocate for community empowerment, environmental justice, and health equity. In my capacity as a resident and IVEJC representative, I serve in the ad hoc committee tasked with developing the infrastructure for the Imperial County Health Equity Advisory Committee. I am also a member of the Imperial Valley Coalition for Community Health based out of Calexico, and a member of the City of Calexico's ad hoc COVID-19 committee. I believe my experiences that involve extensive community engagement makes me a resourceful candidate for the planning commission.

Moreover, my experiences with planning in my work as a Research Associate and educational background in public health which incorporates principles of planning , contribute to my preparation to meaningfully contribute as a member of the Planning commission. During my employment in multiple positions centering around community research , I've led evaluations of health and social programs and initiatives. resident of the City of Calexico for all my life. I have served on the parks and recreation commission from

2016 to 2018 and served on the Police Advisory Commission from March 2019 to December 2020.

While on the Police Advisory Commission, I would work with the community to attend to any concerns

that they would have and had it placed on our agenda. I believe its very Important to develop programs

and strategies to promote positive police/community relations and provide the best service to our

I have been a resident of Calexico all 21 years of my life and I see so much potential in my city. I have a vision to beautify Calexico by organizing multiple community gardens and landscape designs with native plants. The overall goal of th is project is to create spaces for the elderly and youth to enjoy the benefits of gardening and learn to grow their own food . Although we are an agricultural commun ity, many citizens suffer from food insecurity and don't have access to fresh produce.This worries me and I want to help change this.

Another important goal of mine as part of this commission is to create a culture in which gardening provides healing to our community. The benefits of reconnecting with nature include both physical and mental wellness and all age groups can take advantage from this. We all have a connection with nature whether we are aware of it or not. It provides us with many essentia l things that make our society possible and that is why it is important to educate each other on maintaining a sustainable relationship with it.
