Summer Activities Guide 2015

Welcome to the Young Hackney Summer Activities Guide 2015.

This is your one stop shop for everything that’s happening in our borough during the school holiday. Here we’ve compiled details of activities going on in our youth centres, libraries, leisure centres and beyond. Most of them are free, and we’ve teamed up with some really exciting organisations to help you plan a fun-packed summer.I’m ambitious for the youth of Hackney and I’m very fortunate that every day I get to meet inspiring, talented, enthusiastic young people who help to make Hackney a fantastic place to live. The activities on offer reflect this – whether you’re creative or sporty, or interested in culture or making new friends – there are lots of opportunities to help you make the most of your time off school or college.Whatever you do during the holiday, I wish you all a happy and enjoyable summer.

Sports Ambassador, Isaac, 16 “I volunteered as a Sports Ambassador to enhance my knowledge of sports from different perspectives; not just competing or spectating. I’ve organised handball, table tennis and athletics sessions. It was good to be able to manage teams and to encourage other young people to do well, and I learnt some leadership skills. The best thing is, I can use what I’ve learnt to get my Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.”

Sports Ambassadors run events and sessions to encourage young people to get involved in sport. The programme is open to young people aged 13 to 19. They are recruiting for next year. For more info, call Darren: 020 8356 5383.

Youth Parliament member, Beth, 18“Being part of Hackney Youth Parliament and UK Youth Parliament has been a fantastic experience. I’ve met a lot of people within and outside Hackney who have got a passion for making change happen. Hackney Youth Parliament has just finished a campaign to challenge stereotypes about young people; the UK Youth Parliament has started a campaign about mental health awareness in schools and personal, social and health education (PSHE). Sometimes PSHE is good, but sometimes it could be better, so we want to ensure all young people have access to sufficient advice and information. We’re also starting a campaign to get 16-year-olds included in the referendum for the EU. We’re tackling real issues happening right now.”
