THE OCTOBER SILENT AUCTION
The Silent Auction is in October this year becausethe only way to get the next upcoming presentationhas to be in November.
This is important! Once a year we have this silentauction to make some money. It doesn’t go in thebank or in anyone’s pocket, we hope (laugh!)
We have this lovely library for our meeting eleventimes a year. We also get to show what we can dofor two months in their library display cases. Andwhen we do have a presentation we can use thelibrary’s movie screen, projector, and a microphoneif needed.
We have been giving the Torrance Library about$400 for a quite a time. Wouldn’t it be wonderful ifwe could move up to $500? The dollar just isn’twhat it used to be. If each of us spent $15 andbrought a friend or two we might make it.
And best of all is bring some items that will rock arock hounder, tools, or sparkly jewelry that willdrool the women. Don’t forget to read the rules onpage 5.

I guess I learned from LarryFlynt (former Publisher of

It caught my eye!__________

- - - FEDERATION DIRECTOR - - -
Terry Vasseur
I started when I took Bill Sudduth’s trip to Anderson,California; the most north for a CFMS Gem & MineralShow in 2011. I had retired at Boeing in 2006, so whynot. It was a fantastic road trip and to meet Bob Jones andWalt Wright.
Bill finished his third year and I took the Fed Director in2013. Immediately, President Jennifer Haley twisted myarm into taking their CFMS Bulletin Contest. It was quitea job to manage the Agatizer and the Bulletin Contest butyou should do what you can when you can.
Now after six years I am passing our Federation Directorto Anna Robertson. We spent two days together in Chico,California a beautiful little town city five hundred milesNorth of LA. The city reminds me of growing up in asmall city in Wisconsin. In those two days with Anna,Teresita and I got to know her well . I believe Anna willbe a good Federation Director for our South Bay Club.___________
The CFMS Executive Meeting
To begin with the CFMS Executive Committee Meetingcame out with a three page note for us. (1) CFMS gotthree different contracts with different options. Somehowthey worked it over. (2) Then there was some CFMSExecutives wanted changes by-laws to present toDirectors in March. Other Executives said they couldn’tdo it themselves only Directors can change by-laws.(3) Next, the Rocky Mountain Federation didn’t like thecost of insurance by California’s company. (Does anyonelike buying insurance?) (4) Tony Fender suggested futureCFMS Shows & Conventions should have a permanentsite at Tulare. (Isn’t that the near center for ValleyFever?) (5) CFMS has a piece of silver worth $650 in theKeck Museum in NV. Should they sell it? (6) UCLAand Berkley are willing to take CFMS & AFMSScholarships money for students but they won’t give it toearth sciences. (Go to hell with those bigshots, give it tothe community colleges. You will see far more with yourdollar.)___________

How Jade Can Get Into Your Mind
I have cut and polished many rocks and minerals to setin jewelry. Some were jades that I bought small piecesthat were cut in chunks or slabs. I looked at them asordinary green rocks just like all the other rocks exceptWyoming jade. It polished the rock the finest Wyomingblack jade.
I saw Craig Polliard buy huge jade rocks costing inhundreds of dollars. I also have seen him talkingforever with jade aficionados, where they were foundand what made them and their haunting pursuit. MikeBurkleo (a Jade carver from Monterey, California)showed me his jade with specks of metals, gold, andsilver. That got me interested but not enough to collectbig pieces. Craig gave me a slab of a Washington Statejade from the Skagit River. I liked the rind around it soI put it in a picture box on the wall. It was the BitchCreek Idaho jade (also named Teton Jade) we found acollector and vendor Kirk Sargent at Quartzsite in 2015.That coal black jade when sawed thin, it had a gorgeoustransparency green looking threw the sun. That waswhen I found the five of virtues of jade, “its warm ofhumanity, its immaculate purity for its moral integrity, its pleasant tone for wisdom its hardness for justice, andits durability for steadfastness and courage.”

I Was Bitten To The Geology Of American Jade
I first saw the Vulcan Hamburger and I told my wife tobuy it for me. She got it for five dollars! I was shocked. These items are rare. I thought it would be at least fiftydollars or more. That got me even more interested. Theold geezer behind the table was willing to sale. ThenTeresita wanted the big Petrified Brain. It was the biggestand most unusual piece on the table. She got it for thirtydollars. That isn’t a price for a ten-pound jade but I bet itis jade. It will require some geology to confirm it.
A piece like this you don’t want to cut into it. Somecollectors desire odd pieces as they are for suiseki. Andbesides, this rock doesn’t seem to have the colors forjewelry.
So how can we find out for sure if it is jade? Do a specificgravity test. The Vulcan Hamburger could also use a test. The reddish color iron stains is another odd that is foundon jades and other rocks like Franciscan cherts.
What Is Specific Gravity
The density of a solid, liquid or gas is its mass per unitvolume. To find the density (∂), you weigh the object to find its mass (M), you calculate the volume it occupies (V),then divide the mass by the volume: ∂ = M/V. Once you know density, you calculate specific gravity (SG) bydividing the density of the object by the density of water(∂w). In equation form: SG = ∂/∂w. Because this number is dimensionless, it's valid for whatever system of units

you choose. If you need density in pounds, just multiplyspecific gravity by the density of water in those units.
In order to test a 11.6 pound jade rock I will have to havea rather large old balance scale, not an a easy thing tofind.
Specific Gravity Minerals HardnessNephrite Jade 2.90 to 3.03 5 - 6Jadeite 3.4 6.5 - 7
Maybe if I can find a GIA someone or who knows areasonable person can do a specific gravity test; until, itwill sit in our home.

TIPS FROM A JEWELER’S BENCH
Brad Smith Teaching All Ages
SPOT SANDING BRUSH
Sometimes you have a little discoloration or debris toclean from the bottom of a pocket, from an area of coarsetextured surface, or from a small space between twosoldered objects. Finding something to get into thoseclose areas is always an effort increativity.
One tool I have for these specialoccasions is a glass fiber spotsanding brush. It's great forcleaning a small area and doesn'tleave deep scratches, only a faintsatin finish.
There are probably several manufacturers of these pens, but one is the PrepPen Adjustable Sanding Pen selling forUS$ 10.95 from Amazon. You can see it at:

SILVER SOLDER FROM SCRAP
Sometimes you need a lot of silver solder to complete apiece the way you want it to be. For me it was when Iwas trying to join several castings. But silver solder isexpensive, so I found a way to make my own from scrapwith a little help from a penny.
First step is finding out what's in a solder. A searchthrough the reference books (Tim McCreight or ErhardBrepohl) or a Google search will turn up recipes like:
* Hard - AG 80% CU 13% ZN 7%* Medium - AG 70% CU 20% ZN 5%* Easy - AG 63% CU 30% ZN 7%
The silver (AG) and the copper (CU) are easy to come by,but finding some zinc (ZN) has always been my problemuntil I found out that our pennies are almost all zinc.
According to Wikipedia a US penny minted after 1982weighs 2.5 grams and is 97.5% ZN and 2.5% CU. So all Ihad to do is add a penny to some copper and a pile ofsilver scrap.
I chose to use Sterling scrap so I adjusted for the amountof copper in it as well as the amount of copper from thepenny. Here's what I used for components of Mediumsolder:
* Sterling - 36.90 grams* Copper - 9.35* Penny - 2.50
Melt the silver and copper first in a melting dish, mix wellwith a carbon rod or titanium solder pick, add the zinc(penny) last, mix again, and pour into a small mold. Thezinc is added last because melting it causes some tovaporize, and the fumes are a safety problem (They're agray-green color). Be sure to have good ventilation.
To check the solder's melting temperature is correct(medium), I put a sample of the homemade solder on apiece of copper sheet along with a known sample of hard, medium and easy solders. I then heated the plate from thebottom and watched as the easy first melted, the mediummelted, the homemade melted, and finally the hard.
Additional notes on converting the ingot to sheet, strip orwire form - If you have access to a rolling mill, that willbe the fastest way to proceed. Either roll out the ingotinto a sheet and cut strips or roll it out as wire if your millhas the grooves. If you don't have a mill, all you have todo is forge out the ingot into a rough sheet of the gaugeyou'd like and then cut thin strips with bench shears. Besure to anneal the sheet every so often as you forge it.

“French Dolls”
By France McArthur
France McArthur is forever trying this and that. I like that!Something tells me she got a lightbulb exploded in her craniumwhen she watched Marianne Hunter’s presentation last month. Her’s French Dolls aren’t anything like Hunter’s enamel artjewelry but there is a bit of humanity into both of them. Andthat is what creation keeps you busy and good feeling. Try it.
She has passed me the two dolls on the left for donating at theFeather River Lapidary & Mineral Society. They said they weregoing to try to sell them for $20 each. I also donated an obsidianpendant. They were very pleased for our donations.
So, try to become an artist and have some fun. Don't forget toput something in…
