Q: I understand that two peregrine falcons havereturned to a nest box on top of the Bremer Bank Buildingin St. Paul. Is this the same pair that was there last year?
A: The female is the same as last year, but unfortunatelybiologists have not seen the male, Sota, who was fledged 18years ago from a nest near the Minnesota River. We suspectSota died over the winter. He and his partner, Jill, had spentnine years raising young together. Jill is 10 years old and wasfledged from a box at the high bridge in St. Paul. This will beher 10th year at this box. She and Sota raised 28 chicks togeth-er. A new male started coming around and Jill has laid threeeggs. Biologists have not been able to identify the male yet.
A live camera inside the nest box was paid for by donationsto the nongame checkoff. Now the public can watch them laytheir eggs and raise their young in real-time.

K-M AREA
We take Discover,
It's prime garage sale season. Those inter-ested in conquering the clutter once and forall and offering items to willing buyers canimprove their chances of success by follow-ing some key tips.
Individuals have different reasons forholding garage sales. Some people are mov-ing and want to thin out items before pack-ing. Others are looking to make a little extraspending cash. Still others simply enjoy thesocialization garage sales provide.
Garage sales can garner a person a goodprofit. However, if the goal is to make asmuch money as possible on high-end goods, such as antiques or collectibles, a garagesale is probably not the best place to do thistype of selling. Instead, choose a reputableonline bidding site or advertise specialtymerchandise in the local newspaper.
Those who want to clear out their home, cull through the excess clutter and make afew dollars along the way will find that

garage sales can be the idealway to do so ... if done theright way. Otherwise theycan be a waste of time. Hereare some pointers to maxi-mize success.
• Wait until there areenough items to fill a fewtables and spread larger mer-chandise on the driveway orlawn. Individuals will bedrawn to a sale that lookslike it has a good quantity ofitems to pick through.
• Think about a jointgarage sale. Getting togetherwith neighbors enables alarger amount of sale itemsand may attract a biggercrowd.
• It's better to have thesale on one main day thanstretch it over two or threedays. Weekends provide themost action, particularlySaturday. Avoid long week-ends to hold a garage salebecause most people go outof town.
• Garage sale visitors tendto be early birds. Therefore, schedule the sale for theearly morning into the after-noon. An 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.sale will enable a good num-ber of people to make it tothe sale.
• Set up the merchandisethe night before and house itin the garage or anotherlocked area. Simply move itout onto the display tablesbefore the sale.
• Realistically set prices.Remember, a garage sale isan opportunity to unload
items quickly. Don't expect to earn what was originally paidfor each item. Be prepared to part with things for a steal.
• Advertise the garage sale in the local newspaper severaldays in advance. Some people like to post signs in high-traf-fic areas as well, such as traffic intersections or by theentrance to the local supermarket.
• Have easy-to-read signs that mark the way to the sale, including the address and any directional markers. Balloonsand streamers can help make the signs more visible. Be suredrivers can read the signs from the car. Writing that is toosmall will be ineffective. Keep the signs brief:
GARAGE SALEDATEADDRESS• It is best to host the sale in the front yard where passers-
by can easily see the items on display. Garages are ideal forpoor weather conditions but are more difficult to scan forpossible treasures. The backyard should only be used as a lastresort because it is the least visible.
• Remember that the goal is to sell the most items so theydon't have to be packed back up and either put inside or takento the dump. Be able to part with items for less than original-ly marked. Consider slashing prices as the end of the saledraws nearer.

You ask the Senior questionWe find the Savvy answer
Assistive Technologies That HelpElderly Seniors Stay at Home
Dear Savvy Senior,What types of new home technologies can you rec-
ommend to help me keep tabs on my elderly mother? She lives alone, about an hour’s drive from me, and Iworry about her safety.
Concerned DaughterDear Concerned,Helping an aging parent remain independent and living in
their own home has become a little easier in recent years, thanks to a host of new and improved assistive technologyproducts. Here are some top rated options you shouldknow about.
Medical AlertsIf you’re worrying about your mom falling and needing
help, one of the most frequently used products over theyears for seniors living alone is a medical alert device – alsoknown as a personal emergency response system, orPERS.
These devices provide a wearable “SOS” button – typi-cally in the form of a necklace pendent or bracelet – and abase station that connects to the home phone line.
At the press of a button, your mom could call and talk toa trained operator through the system’s base station receiv-er which works like a powerful speaker phone. The opera-tor will find out what’s wrong, and will notify family mem-bers, a neighbor, friend or emergency services as needed.
If you’re interested in this, there are dozens of servicesto choose from including the Philips Lifeline(lifelinesys.com, 800-380-3111) which is the most widelyused medical alert service in the U.S. and costs around $35per month. Phillips also offers a new Auto Alert option (for$48 per month) that has fall detection sensors in the SOSbutton that can automatically summon help without yourmom ever having to press a button. This is helpful becausemany seniors after a fall become confused or disorientedand forget to press the button.
If you’re interested in a more budget-friendly option, consider an unmonitored medical alert like the new VTechCareLine Home Safety Telephone System for $120 (vtech-phones.com), which doesn’t require professional monitoringservices, therefore has no monthly monitoring fees.
Or, to deal with falls or health emergencies that happenoutside the home, there are mobile-alert GPS products nowavailable that work anywhere. To find these, seeGreatCall.com, MobileHelpNow.com andPhilipsLifelineGoSafe.com.
Monitoring SystemsAnother more sophisticated technology for keeping tabs
on your mom is with a home monitoring system. Thesesystems will let you know whether she is waking up andgoing to bed on time, eating properly, showering and takingher medicine.
They work through small wireless sensors (not cameras)placed in key locations throughout the home. The sensorswill track her movements, learning her daily activity pat-terns and routines, and will notify you or other family mem-bers via text message, email or phone if something out ofthe ordinary is happening. For instance, if she went to thebathroom and didn’t leave it could indicate a fall or otheremergency.
You can also check up on her patterns anytime you wantthrough the system’s password-protected website. And foradditional protection, most services offer SOS call buttonsas well that can be placed around the house, or worn.
Some good companies that offer these services areBeClose (beclose.com, 866-574-1784), which runs $399 or$499 for the sensors, plus a $69 monthly service fee if paida year in advance. And GrandCare Systems(grandcare.com, 262-338-6147), which adds a fantasticsocial component – through a senior-friendly computer – togo along with the activity monitoring. GrandCare leases for$150 to $300 per month.
Medication ManagementIf you want to make sure your mom is keeping up with
her medications, there are medication management devicesyou can now rent, that will dispense her medicine onschedule, provide constant reminders, and even notify youif her medicine is not taken. Two products that offer this areMedMinder (medminder.com, 888-633-6463), which rentsfor $40 per month, and the Philips Medication DispensingService (managemypills.com, 888-632-3261) that costs$75/month.

New plant cultivars appeal, butwill they perform?
Paging through plant catalogs in search of exciting newcultivars is a time-honored tradition during Minnesota’s longwinter. But Kathy Zuzek, a University of MinnesotaExtension horticultural educator, advises: “Before investing, find out if the cultivars you desire have been shown to per-form well in Minnesota gardens.”
Nurseries and catalog retailers should provide customerswith the best performing plant selections for the climate andother growing conditions of the customer’s location, but thetrend in horticulture is to move new plants onto the market inthe shortest possible time frame.
“In the blink of an eye, newly introduced cultivars disap-pear from garden centers and catalogs and new plants take thelimelight,” says Zuzek.
This creates some problems. Cultivars—plants developedfor distinctive traits that set them apart from other plants inthe same species—are now introduced to Minnesota garden-ers from around the world. When rushed to the market, theplant's performance in Upper Midwest gardens might skiptheir turn in evaluation trials.
Purchasing inexpensive, fast-maturing, un-trialed cultivarsmight be worth the risk. You could get lucky and discover anew favorite plant. Zuzek warns that it is much riskier to buyexpensive un-trialed shrubs and trees that take years to reachmaturity.
If newly introduced cultivars are displaced quickly byeven newer cultivars, they might prove to be a good per-former in our Minnesota gardens after they have already beenremoved from nursery catalogs. Alas, you’ll never know whatcould have been.
The emphasis on the new and exciting may also eliminateolder cultivars from the nursery trade. What if older cultivarsthat have proven their long-term landscape value are replacedwith un-trialed cultivars that fall short of the mark?
Zuzek suggests that wise gardeners can help solve theseproblems by asking "What's good?" rather than "What'snew?"
Need help finding out “what’s good”? Here are some ofZuzek’s suggestions:
Look to land grant universities and affiliated Extensions. The University of Minnesota is home to research programsthat develop cultivars of turfgrasses, herbaceous perennials, ornamental shrubs and trees, and fruit crops for the UpperMidwest. These cultivars are highlighted on Extension’sMinnesota Hardy website (www.extension.umn.edu/go/1101).Information on garden plant selection can also be found onExtension’s Garden website www.extension.umn.edu/Garden.
Ask an Extension Master Gardener. County-based MasterGardeners regularly educate in their communities, so don’thesitate to approach them when you see them. You can alsoask online (www.extension.umn.edu/go/1100) and receive ananswer within approximately 48 hours.
Visit the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum to view plantsthat grow in Minnesota’s hardiness zones. The arboretum(www.arboretum.umn.edu) is home to thousands of ornamen-tal cultivars of annuals, herbaceous perennials, ornamentalshrubs and trees, and vegetables and fruits. Also, check outthe Plant Info section (plantinfo.umn.edu) on the arboretumwebsite.
Take advantage of the information available from plantevaluation programs. The All-America Selections program(www.all-americaselections.org) and the Chicago BotanicGarden’s Plant Evaluation program (http://bit.ly/yF3YyU)evaluate and identify garden plants for superior performance. The horticultural garden at the West Central Research andOutreach Center in Morris, Minn. is home to one of the 47All-America Selections test sites.

JEFF REHWALDT IN 14TH YEAR JEFF REHWALDT IN 14TH YEAR OF TREE MOVING BUSINESSOF TREE MOVING BUSINESS
Last year at this time Jeff Rehwaldt would have already been busy moving trees. This yearhe is just now thinking about taking his tree mover out of storage. Spring fever is at a peakand Jeff, owner of Jeff's Tree Moving LLC., of Kasson, is anxious to get out and dig in thedirt.
Tree moving has been a good change of pace for Jeff in his 30th year working at IBM. "Ilike the idea of running a tree moving machine, helping other people and maybe making a lit-tle money, too. It's a good change of pace from my indoor job," said Jeff. He likes to be out-doors and this business provides that opportunity.
His tree mover is mounted on the heavy duty chassis of a Schwan's Ice Cream truck. Hehas moved pines, hickory, maple ash and more over the years. Pines are most commonbecause the DNR and Pheasants Forever have provided them for cover and habitat. They aregenerally planted close together when young and some need to be moved as they grow, sothat's where Jeff and his business come into the picture.
Jeff can easily move a tree with a 5" trunk diameter. Tree moving is not an exact science, but it is necessary to follow a good procedure to insure the tree has the highest percentage forsurvival. Landscapes, access and grade all affect success but Jeff has seen just about everysituation possible in his first 13 years of business. The tree should be centered in the dirt balland watered regularly....not over-watered.
He charges by the tree plus mileage. He believes that is the fairest way to deal with a cus-tomer. He does not have a nursery, but does have several sources available where a customercan purchase trees.
Jeff can move one or two trees in the yard for ornamental value or help build a better windbreak with dozens of trees, depending on the customers needs. If that nice tree is right whereyou want a new shed and you'd rather have it 'over there', no problem. "It's a fun change ofpace for me" said Jeff, who never settles for anything less than doing a good job for the cus-tomer.
If interested in having trees moved or new trees planted give Jeff a call for an estimate at(507)634-4343 and leave a message during the day. Jeff and his tree moving machine canhandle most residential and commercial tree moving/planting needs.
Jeff Rehwaldt of Kasson, a Dodge Center native, is beginning his 14th year ofoperating Jeff's Tree Moving LLC. His tree mover is mounted on the chassis of aSchwan's Ice Cream truck.
