mouth bass, and musky. He is known for his creative streamer patterns. William’s presentation focused on
fishing the North Branch of the Potomac River and he presented an outstanding fly tying demonstration of
patterns that are known to catch trophy fish in these waters. William has 100s of big fish photos on his
website.
March-April Massanutten TU Highlights
March 10, 2015; Colby Trow on Saltwater Flyfishing
Colby and Brian Trow have been bonefishing every year in
the Bahamas. Colby told and showed us some fantastic ex-
ploits on bonefishing. Then, he wowed us with his new fly-
fishing passion, marlin caught on the fly off Virginia Beach.
They teased marlin close to the boat, then cast a fly in place of
the teaser; explosion as the marlin takes, then spectacular vid-
eo of the leaping fight and catch.
March 26, 2015: Trout in the

gram Leader Ph: (540) 432-0607; Email: [email protected]
The month of April was the kick-off os the program’s spring events for the veterans. To prepare
for fishing outings, the participants met weekly to tie flies for spring fishing. Likewise there were
weekly casting classes to introduce the seven new disabled vets to fly casting. During the month there
were five local area fishing outings.
Many thanks go to the volunteers who gave freely close to 500 hours at various events. Volunteer
help is more than welcome. If you would like to contribute an hour or two, your impact will greatly
help the vets. If you would like to teach a class, or just share stories with a vet, your help would defi-
nitely help those who need help. If you would like to volunteer, please email me at [email protected].
Upcoming Massanutten TU Meetings (Thanks to Richard Faust)
September 8, 2015, Dan Downey.
Dan Downey is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at James Madison
University. Dan is a native of the Shenandoah Valley and attended Madison College before earning
his PhD in analytical and nuclear chemistry from Louisiana State Dan is a past president of MTU.
His presentation is titled “Water Chemistry of North Branch Simpson Creek and the Rich Hole Wil-
derness Fire.”
October 13, 2015, Charles Kraft
Charles A. Kraft Jr. has been designing flies and guiding since 1959. His patterns not only work
for bass and trout, but also for Saltwater species too, and are used all over the world. Chuck's fly
patterns include the Kraft Kreelex, the CK baitfish and the Kraft Clawdads. The Clawdad repre-
sents a crawfish and is extremely effective on large rainbow and brown trout and smallmouth
bass. Kreelex and baitfish are both deadly imitations of forage fish. Chuck will demonstrate how to
tie several of his most successful patterns and give tips on how they should be fished.
April 11-12, 2015; VA Fly Fishing Festival in Waynesboro
VA Flyfishing Festival welcomed many new exhibitors to the tent this year. Mossy Creek Fly
Shop again had a strong presence, and Colby Trow gave a talk on fishing the Shenandosh Valley.
Guide Tom Sadler gave a demo of his specialty, Tenkara fishing. Shane Maybush tied streamers.
Wine booths gave free demos (winerys present were weaker than in 2014, but many new
sources presented). Experts Lefty Kreh, Ed Jaworowski, Gary Dubiel, William Heresniak, Dusty
Wissmuth, Chuck Kraft, Kiki Galvin, and many others presented, but the most unique booth was
two young (10 & 12?) brothers fly tying commercial flies!
5th Grade class released their TIC brook trout into Jerry Black’s stretch of Beaver Creek on
March 26, a delightful sunny spring day. Ann is a national teacher of the year for hosting local
veterans who received stars the class made. Ann is signed up to do TIC next year.
Bill Conlin led MTU volunteers Jerry Black, Fred Williams, Susan Chairamonte, Rodney Min-
er, and Kemper Eagle helping the excited youngsters to release the 2 inchers and to do a stream
macroinvertibrate survey. Jerry handed out a quarter to each student who found a water penny.

On the recent passing of David Fox, a longtime valued MTU member, we send our heartfelt
condolences to his family. Despite his crippling disease, David made nearly all MTU meetings

versity. David was friends with former MTU President Dennis Patzig, and also with the Eagles,
but was a close fishing buddy of Tom Leigh, also a professor at JMU (and before that, Madison
