Potomac Basset Hound Club, Inc.Meeting Minutes

November 8, 2014

Meeting at the home of Joan Portner,

Rhodes, VA

Begin at:September minutes approved as sent to membership. Meeting called to order at 10:10 a.m.

President’s Report:Kevin thanked everyone who came to the Fall specialty of the PBHC. It was great to see everyone there and we are glad that we had an excellent lunch and weather. Kevin thanked members for their contributions to help make the lunch possible and that given the low cost and the excellent feedback that was received, the idea of budget catered lunches will be explored and considered for future events.

Committee Reports

Show Chairman: ribbons - We will need to start thinking about ribbon sizes soon for our Spring Specialty, it was decided that, to promote appearances and to recognize the accomplishments, that ribbons of decent proportions will be ordered for the spring specialty.

Trophy: If anyone is donating an item for a prize for spring specialty we need to know NOW. Please email Devon Merritt ([email protected]) if you are interested in sponsoring a class.

Hospitality: No report.

Grounds: We do not need to worry about grounds as those are the responsibility of Southern Maryland KC

Photographer: We will inquire about the usage of the SMKC photographer for use at our show.

Food: Heavy hors d’oeuvres is the current idea for Spring Specialty given the late time of the second show.

Raffle: For the Spring Raffle, folks who are interested in donating to the raffle are encouraged to create a gift bag/box. Or collaborate with others interested to create a gift box. The ideas of gift boxes has proven very popular in the past, helps consolidate inventory and make it easier for all involved.

Hunt test updates: Thanks to the tireless work of Ellen Ripper and Martha Havron the PBHC Hunt Test has been set for March 28 and 29. The Hunt Test will be held at the Battlefield Beagle Club in Locust Grove, VA. The entry

space is limited both days so please be sure to complete your entry ahead of time. The issue of royalties to the Battlefield Beagle Club was discussed. It was agreed to seek to negotiate a favorable rate for PBHC in terms of money given, a donation or support through other means to the Beagle Club may need to be considered to ensure cordial relations in the future.

PBHC Fall Specialty- Our Specialty went off without a hitch with lovely weather and great food! We had a wonderful entry and our income should arrive from MKC in the next few weeks.

NewUpdate on Spring Specialty: If we do an evening stand alone specialty, entry is capped at 50 due to AKC rules. Just FYI. Do we want to do an “in conjunction” specialty with the Friday Southern Maryland Club and get our own judge?

What's in a Name?Have you ever wondered how our PBHC basset breeders came up with their kennel names? Here are the responses we received from several members: BARNYARD -- As far as our kennel name goes, we had company one day. We were all sitting looking out at my barn, and the bassets were playing in the cor-ral. A friend looked down and said, “Look at all those barnyard bassets.” Max and I looked at each other and said, “There’s the name. “ Until then, we had been going back and forth with names for weeks, but we couldn't agree on anything until that day. That's how we came up with Barnyard Bassets. Pat and Max Harder.

Plans are well underway for the March 28-29, 2015 Hunt-ing Performance Test. After

a long negotiation process, the Battlefield Beagle Club has approved our request with a two thirds vote to hold the event on their grounds and use the club house.

This will be the first Hunting Performance test in the state of VA. Now we can move full steam ahead. Our request has been submitted to BHCA. We must supply the names of our Judges and Test Secretary. Karen Highley is working on that contacting experi-enced HPT members. Martha Havron has found a date that didn't conflict with the many nearby breed shows, obedience or rally trials that Potomac members attend.Because BHCA limits the entry to just 15 stakes each day due to the 30 minute run time and the short amount of daylight, we will need to generate addi-tional income from our raffle and lunch.

Kevin Merritt has agreed to work with Dale Mc-Gregor to put together one of his great meals as he has done in the past for our Spring conformation shows. With the show moving to the Crab Cluster in June, what better way to continue our great tradition of good food than a lunch for this outdoor event?

Along with lunch, a super raffle is shaping up. Judy Trenck is a hard act to follow, especially for someone who has never put together a raffle before. As a thank you to PBHC for having one of our Therapy Bassets come in this past Summer, the children from Potomac Library in Woodbridge, VA will be decorating each box with basset pictures. This is their Community Service Project.

Thanks to some gener-ous donations that have come in from

PBHC members, we are offering a variety of inter-esting items including gift cards from Home Depot,

Lowes, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Amazon along with a VA box of homemade products, a craft box with dog related items, two canvas bags with matching hand towels--breed specific, some tools such as a commer-cial grade tape measure, set of screw drivers, 2 mag-netic strips for tools or utensils, many kinds of flash lights and even a Snak Attak box, and a lovely flower arrangement to be created for us from Michaels. Our jack pot raffle item is a hand carved red tip wooden bush beating/walking stick with the head of a rabbit in profile carved from butternut done by a local VA wood carver. We are contacting many local businesses to ask for donations. We hope to make this a raffle to remember.

BHCA supplies the award ribbons and colored collars, all other expenses are ours. Here is where each and every PBHC member can help. We NEED EVERY-ONE to be a player. According to the latest PBHC directory, we are 44 members strong. If all 44 contrib-ute something, think how much that would add to the raffle.

ALL members are challenged to help. Gift cards are great, easy to find and mail. The cards need to be

from businesses which can be accessed from people in the Mid Atlantic area such as: the Tractor Supply, Southern States, Harbor Freight Tools, Gander Moun-tain, L.L. Bean, Subway, Papa Johns, Starbucks, etc.Just mail to: Ellen Ripper, 14701 Blair Court, Wood-bridge, VA 22193. A heads up email letting me know you have sent something would be appreciated: [email protected].

We need more made in VA items. Wine would be nice. I'll be glad to accept any items you wish to do-nate at upcoming club meetings.

Members will be contacted and asked to help at the HPT. Shifts will be divided Sat. and Sun. into A.M. and P.M.
