ams Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall

The Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall provides supervised homework time, outdoor andindoor recreational activities and social time with other classmates. The program is offered onevery full day of school after dismissal until 6:00 p.m. but it is not offered on early dismissal days.

■ It may be utilized on an “as needed” basis and is billed at a rate of $25.00 a day.

■ There is also an option to enroll for an entire semester at a rate of $12.00 a day ($960.00 per semester).

Enrichment ProgramThe Enrichment Program reinforces, expands and enriches the school curriculum. We offer a variety of activities such as sports, music, theatrical and applied arts. An Extended Day Careprogram that follows these activities at no extra cost Monday through Friday ends at 6:00 p.m. and includes homework time, reading stories and indoor/outdoor play.

Fundamental of Theater • Malia Nicolini Is your child singing, dancing, and wantingto put on a show? This class is designed toteach the fundamentals of theater. That includes: script analysis, an actress’s process,basic acting, ensemble building, and a finalperformance at the end of the course. Expressing yourself through art is importantand sometimes essential on ones journey toself-discovery. We also want to establish astrong sense of community, in understandingit takes more than one person to put up ashow. The goal for the class is for students to gain knowledge of theatrical terms, respect for the people on stage, and to feel significantly more confident with who theyare both on and off the stage. The only limitations we have are the ones that are inour own mind!

Around the World Cooking • Christina AlgecirasAround The World Cooking will teach studentshow to produce authentic international fare fortheir family and friends. This class provides aplace for the senses to explore the wonderfultastes from different regions of the world.

Basic Art • Mary LarsenStudents will explore traditional and non-traditional art techniques in a fun atmospheredesigned to encourage creativity. Along withpainting, drawing and mixed media we will bemaking 3-D art using recycled materials. Withlessons inspired by artists such as Klee andMiro, students will learn about art history andthey will also gain important knowledge about the environment through working withrecycled materials.

Ceramics — Innovative Hand BuildingArt Pieces • Maite Oca (Primary)Make sculptural projects using coil slab andother hand building techniques.

Ceramics — Learn and Play with Clay • Maite Oca (Montessori)Students use hand building in simple andplayful projects to get acquainted with ceramics.

Cupcake Wars • Cooking with Kids Miami(Maria Cummins and Kristine Beselica)This class introduces a HEALTHY approach tobaking. Chef students will learn to use healthyalternatives while competing at “CupcakeWars”... just like seen on the Food Network!

Martial Arts • Nicole PlummerMartial arts is a great way to condition yourmind as well as your body. This class willteach the basics of the martial arts not only to attain physical fitness and participate inself defense but also the fundamental goalsto shape successful human beings, who willhelp create a better world. The goal is toteach students excellent behavior at homeand at school, develop an awareness of theimportance of fitness, build confidence, selfdiscipline, academic excellence and the toolsto achieve any goal.

Mind LabThis class helps children to enhance theircognitive, social and emotional skills usingwell-selected thinking games. The gamesteach the fundamentals of problem solving,decision making, deduction and inductionprocedures, teamwork and communication.Concepts are applied to real life situations.

Etiquette • Modern Etiquette MiamiThe instructor will blend kindness, consideration,and respect with correctness, social poise, andmanners for all occasions. The goal of theseclasses is to instill a life-long social confidence.

Physical Fitness for Kids! • Lizzette ChiappyGet a taste of different forms of fitness:Zumba, Yoga, Pilates & more. Students willspend 3-4 weeks on each form of fitness whilealso being guided through correct forms ofstretching. Project Runway • Selene IsraelThis program is for girls to learn basic sewingskills while making items and clothes they loveto wear. The idea of the class is to have funsewing multiple projects. Small at first thenbuilding on that knowledge as the child learns.With the easy sewing projects students willlearn step by step, slow and steady, to buildtheir foundation of sewing expertise. The willlearn how to safely operate a Sewing Machine,how to follow a pattern and understand sewing terms.

ROBOTICSRobotics is a sport for the mind! It is a concrete and tangible way to build and strengthen cognitive development, as well as other academic areas such as mathematics,engineering, communication skills, strategic thinking and goal-oriented thinking. Most importantly children learn to appreciate the passion of learning, challenge, anddesire to succeed. Robotics allow students to explore STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).

Little Lego Engineers • Cherry Zhong and Carlina Lerma (Montessori and Grade 1)New students to the program will use their imagination to turn a room full of Lego BuildingBricks into their very own creation. They will learn about “structural integrity, design anda practical sense of Geometry”. They will create their own robotics journals and presenttheir designs to the class. More advanced students will use WEDO Lego Education Kits tohelp them become programmers and make their creations come to life.

Senior Lego Engineering • MT Valle and Carlina Lerma (Primary – Grades 2 and 3)New students will be exposed to all types of Lego Building Blocks, Lego We Do and Scratchprograms to help them create musical sculptures, dancing animals, and other playful inventions. Those with more experience will build and program robots using the Lego Mindstorm Kits.

Competition First Lego League®, Cyclone Bot • MT Valle (Intermediate)This After School program is in it’s 4th year and again 3 teams qualified for regionals. Outof 20 teams, Carrollton placed first and second and both went on do well at the StateCompetition. As team members, students compete by researching a topic and inventinga solution. They are given a team building activity to solve and asked to present theirrobot and attachments to different judges. Their autonomous robot must solve a set ofmissions for points during three 2.5 minute rounds. Teams must show true sportsmanshipin order to qualify for awards. In this year’s First Lego League challenge, Nature’s Fury,teams will discover what can be done when intense natural events meet the places people live, work, and play. Soccer • Carrollton Coaching Staff This developmental program teaches the appropriate skills for each age group. Fungames, instructional scrimmages and otheractivities are the techniques used to ensuresuccess for each participant.

Swimming • Jane ReillySwimming lessons are a vital part of your children’s development. This class teacheschildren of all ages water survival skills including stroke development, breathingtechniques and skill coordination.

Yoga Class • Christina AlgecirasCome experience the joy of Yoga! Each classincludes breathing techniques, warm-up,poise practice and relaxation. Students willlearn the fundamental yoga principles by engaging in poses, music, dance. This class is designed to help your child find balance, develop strength and flexibility, build self-esteem and confidence, manage stressand have fun!

Dance Program • Marielly Ramirez

Pre-BalletThis is an introduction to dance for children 3 to 5 years old. The class focuses on developing locomotor skills through creative movement and the basic elements of ballet. The routine for this class includes a floor warm-up followed by ballet barre andcenter and across the floor exercises. During these exercises the children will learn themovement as well as the correct terminology to name the steps they learn. The classwork is designed to allow for the use of imagination and creativity in order to teach thedancers to move efficiently and in an organized way within the group. Built upon thebasic movements of ballet, the concept learned in this class are an excellent way tobuild cognitive physical skills for any child.

Beginning BalletOffered to children 6 years or older, the class emphasis is placed on the development of alignment, strength, flexibility, coordination, style and an understanding of the vocabulary used to describe movement in ballet. This class helps dance students to transition to more structured ballet dance technique. Proper posture is emphasized andthe class also has a strong component of creative movement and locomotor skills development exercises.

Preparatory FlamencoThis is an introduction to flamenco for children 3 to 5 years old. The class is designed toteach young children flamenco in a fun way. Students will develop a basic understandingof the rhythm, footwork and arm work used in this style of dance through activities appropriate for their age group. Castanets are also taught in this class.

Beginning FlamencoOffered to children 6 years or older, this class formally introduces students to the rhythmic structure of flamenco while learning the basic technique of this type of dance.Enphasis is placed on correlact posture and articulation of the arms and feet. In addition,sevillanas and basic castanet technique are taught in this class.

The After School Academic Program (ASAP) focuses on math and reading concepts, study skills and homework help and promotes collaboration between the tutor and teacher. At the end of the session, a narrative will be provided by the teacher to the parent.

■ Services are available for all subject areas for grade levels 1-8. ■ Student teacher ratio is 3 to 1. ■ Classes will be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment.

Handwriting ClubMontessoriThis small group will look at skills children need to master before entering Kindergarten, such as: lines, shapes,grip and drawing a person. Session will consist of a motor activity, an interactive lesson with a multisensory approach using a variety of materials reinforcing with what they are learning in the classroom.

PrimaryThis small group will work on the basic components of handwriting that children will need to be successful inprint or cursive. All activities will be multisensory, fun and engaging. Session will consist of a motor activity, aninteractive lesson with a multisensory approach using a variety of materials consistent with what they are learning on the classroom.

Miami Handwriting was founded by Nicole Santamaria OTR/L. Nicole has been an occupational therapist for over 15 years with a vast experience in pediatrics and adults. She is currently providing handwriting tutoring services tochildren in the Miami area. She is experienced in handwriting curriculums, such as Handwriting without Tears, D’ Nealian and Zaner- Bloser.

Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall: Registration and Procedures

■ Registration is available on the parent portal and must be made online.

■ A statement will be generated on a monthly basis. Full payment must be received in a timelymanner in order to continue with the service.

■ Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall is offered on every full day of school but it is not offeredon early dismissal days.

Enrichment Program and After Achool Academic Program (ASAP): Registration and Procedures

■ Registration forms are available on the parent portal and should be submitted as soon as registration opens to guarantee a class space.

■ Registration must be made online. We will not accept walk-ins or mailed forms.

■ Online registration will begin on August 12, 2013. Enrollment in a class is subject to approval by the After School Office.

■ Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis through registration on the parent portal.

■ Payment must be received for the registration to be complete and space reserved in the class.

■ Classes may be cancelled if they do not meet minimum enrollment.

■ If a class is cancelled by the After School Office, you will be notified by email or phone and receive a refund.

■ No credits or make-ups are available for absence.

Extended Day Care / Library Study Hall and Enrichment Dismissal Procedures

■ At school dismissal, students are escorted to the designated Extended Day Care/Library StudyHall meeting place by their After School Program (ASP) teacher. At that point, all ASP studentscheck in with their ASP staff member and begin their daily activities. A healthy snack will beprovided to every student participating in an After School Program.

■ All children participating in our programs must be signed out by a parent or an authorizedparty.

■ All students enrolled in the Enrichment Program and After School Academic Program (ASAP),can stay in the Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall Program until 6:00 p.m. at no extracharge the day of the class. In addition, sign up for four enrichment classes and stay on Fridayin the Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall at no charge.

■ All children will be signed out from both Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall, EnrichmentProgram and After School Academic Program (ASAP) by a parent or an authorized party in thefollowing locations:

• Montessori and Primary (Primary Library/Duchesne Campus)

• Intermediate and Junior High (Founders Library/Barat Campus)

■ For your child’s safety and protection, all children will be dismissed by After School Program(ASP) teachers. If you need to pick up your child early from a scheduled class, please go directly to the Extended Day Care/Library Study Hall to sign out your child.
