New Hall of Fame InducteesNine people who have made a lasting impact on the College were inducted into the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame during Alumni Weekend in July.

“The contributions of the friends and alumni we are honoring today have enriched the lives of students and the entire campus community,” said President Zvi Szafran. “Their dedication to SUNY Canton is truly inspiring.”

The 2014 inductees were:• Thomas W. Duda • Betty J. Evans • Linda L. Fay• John T. Henderson `52• Aaron J. and Doris H. Lasher• Jean M. Poticher `44• T. Urling and Mabel B. Walker

Dear Alumni and Friends, Thank you for welcoming me so warmly to SUNY Canton. It is my distinct privilege to serve as the College’s fourth president. Shortly after my arrival, I had the pleasure of attending my first Alumni Weekend where I met a remarkable group of people who care very deeply about their alma mater. In fact, everywhere I go, I seem to run into people associated with SUNY Canton – business owners, medical professionals, public servants, philanthropists – all working together to make others’ lives better. It has given me a fantastic perspective of the far-reaching ways that our college enhances all aspects of life in the community. Throughout this issue, you will learn about alumni and friends who are investing their time, talent and resources in SUNY Canton’s future. You’ll also meet talented current students and recent graduates who are thriving. Finally, you can learn a little about me and my vision for building on the College’s tradition of excellence and innovation. As we move ahead together in this new chapter, I look forward to working with you to build upon all the great things that SUNY Canton has done in the North Country and beyond. Thank you for your generous support. Best regards, Zvi

CURRENT NEWSGreen Building Named in Honor of Distinguished Alumnus

A campus building that houses workforce development training received upgrades and a new name during the past year, thanks to a series of donations by alumnus John L. Halford Sr. `49.

The newly renovated facility, which houses the Career Ready Education and Success Training Center for Workforce Development, was renamed Halford Hall at a ceremony

Students are learning the ins and outs of stock trading in a brand-new Business Learning Center in the recently renovated Cook Hall, which reopened this fall. A charitable gift of $20,000 from investment firm Alesco Advisors of Pittsford helped create the learning space, which features touch-screen displays showing financial indicators and an LED stock ticker displaying real-time stock prices.

“We are delighted and proud to assist in the establishment of the stock trading classroom, as well as the exciting growth of SUNY Canton,” said Todd D. Green, Alesco’s chief investment officer.

Pi Nu Epsilon Celebrates 100 Years With DedicationThe College’s oldest sorority raised more than $31,000 to rename the atrium of SUNY Canton’s Chaney Dining Center as part of their centennial anniversary celebration during Alumni Weekend. The building is named for Mary Adele Chaney, a 1910 graduate and former professor of domestic science, who was instrumental in starting Pi Nu Epsilon.

“This investment will cement our place in the College's history, as well as serve as a source of great pride when we return to campus.” said Kelly C. (Heise) Obermayer `79, Pi Nu Epsilon sister and 100th Anniversary Celebration chair.

SUNY Canton selected David A. Frary `70 and `72 as the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus. He accepted the award during the College’s Alumni Weekend celebration in July.

A Massena native, Frary received degrees in Banking, Insurance and Real Estate, as well as Mortuary Science. He is a licensed funeral director and owner and manager of Phillips Memorial Home. He is also an advocate of quality end-of-life care through his volunteer work with the St. Lawrence Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.

His support of the College has included serving on the SUNY Canton College Foundation Board of Directors since 1990. He is also a member of the Mortuary Science Advisory Committee and is a scholarship sponsor.

“Mr. Frary has been extremely generous to SUNY Canton and the entire North Country community with his time, talents and financial contributions over the years,” said David M. Gerlach, SUNY Canton’s vice president for advancement.

“He is a wonderful ambassador for our college and is a role model for our students.”

The College named one of its newest classrooms in honor of Canton’s Coakley family in October.

William J. (Bill) and Carol M. Coakley, Carol J. and Ronald J. Spadaccini, and Thomas F. (Tom) and Nellie E. Coakley, the owners of Coakley Carpet One Ace Hardware in Canton, previously made a donation to the SUNY Canton Foundation for the College’s Roos House Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center. Glenn C. Werlau `57, president and owner of Werlatone Inc., recently opened the doors of his manufacturing company headquarters in Patterson to SUNY Canton’s student Electrical Engineering club. The visit was designed to provide insight into Werlatone’s business of developing high-power radio frequency components. Students toured the production, testing and laboratory areas where engineers showcased the latest technology. As a longtime college supporter, Werlau’s donations helped fund the trip. He spoke to students about the dedication required to become a successful entrepreneur, as well as the future of the radio frequency industry.

“It’s one thing to hear someone talk about job opportunities when they visit the College or the classroom, it is quite another reality when students are able to see and visit facilities and alumni who build their lives upon their education,” said SUNY Canton Instructional Support Technician and club adviser David W. Hartle. “We are grateful to Glenn for sharing his time and resources with our students.”

Alumna Has Top Dog at WestminsterCatherine E. (Thornton)Lewandowski `87 has been showing dogs for most of her life. She started competing at age 15 with her family pet – an Irish setter named Scarlet – using the skills she learned from Jefferson County’s 4-H Junior Showmanship classes. Fast-forward to earlier this year when Lewandowski competed in the Super Bowl of dog showing – the Westminster Kennel Club event in

New York City – and walked away with a best-of-breed win for her curly coated retriever, Dana.

“I was shocked when they called our name,” she said. “We were up against the number-one curly coat in the nation, and we all expected him to win. It was unreal.” Lewandowski was one of a very small group of breeder-owner-handlers in the competition. This was her first time at Westminster, and since it is an invitation-only event, she said it was an honor to be selected. She and her husband, Mark, are the owners of Soft Maple Curly Coated Retrievers kennel in Croghan where they breed “curlies,” as they are sometimes called. She also works full time as a clinical analyst at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville. Lewandowski studied Veterinary Science Technology and said

the knowledge she gained at SUNY Canton helped her run a successful breeding business that has produced numerous American Kennel Club agility champions. One of her most cherished memories during college was being able to spend time with her Irish setter, Scarlet.

“The best part about parents weekend was when my mom and dad visited and brought Scarlet,” she said. “I would give hand-signal demonstrations in the lobby for my friends. I could tell everyone missed their own pets, because people in the dorm who I didn’t even know would stop to meet her.”

When John G. Duken `81 visited SUNY Canton this fall, he gave an inspiring presentation to business students about the secrets to his success. Perseverance, discipline and intellectual curiosity were a few of the qualities he said have served him well during his career. As the executive vice president of global merchandising for Dick’s Sporting Goods – one of the country’s most successful sports retailers – Duken is part of a team that manages the day-to-day operations of the $6.8 billion company. He credited SUNY Canton for providing an environment where he could grow academically and personally. He learned to study, work collaboratively in committees, seek leadership positions and express opinions. After earning his associate degree in Accounting, he applied to the University of Southern California.

“I was an average student in high school,” he said. "However, SUNY Canton gave me the opportunity to be competitive in applying to USC and the skills necessary to successfully graduate.” Although he has had an incredible career and has worked in several high-profile positions for Circuit City and Dick’s, he humbly admits he usually isn’t the smartest person in the room. “But, I ask a lot of questions and surround myself with very smart people.” He also believes that helping others is a crucial element to finding success in one’s own career pursuits. His volunteer endeavors have included providing leadership to the Catholic School Diocese athletic programs in the greater Pittsburgh area and establishing the Duken Family Scholarship, which will be awarded annually to a SUNY Canton student from Clinton County who demonstrates an interest in business. He said, “Being able to support other people’s dreams and help them accomplish their goals is what life is all about.”

José Menendez '16

International student José A. Menendez ˋ16 has traveled more than 2,000 miles from his hometown in Venezuela for the opportunity to study in the U.S. His journey began when he discovered an organization that helps students attend colleges abroad. SUNY Canton was a perfect choice, he said, because he could study Business Administration and play soccer, which has been his lifelong love. “My father gave me a passion for the sport,” he said. “My mother taught me that you must work hard.” His work ethic extends into the classroom, too. He earned a perfect 4.0 GPA last semester and is the recipient of the Rosanna Mae Moser Endowed Scholarship and the Gilbert, Chadwick and Christy Investment Club Scholarship. This spring he was part of a team that was selected to compete against some of the most prestigious schools in the country in the International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition. “José leans into any competition and is a natural spokesman for any group,” said Professor Charles R. Fenner, Ph.D., who was the competition adviser.

“He settles only for first place in all his endeavors.”

Menendez also serves as a role model for other students through his work as a resident assistant on campus and a member of the men’s soccer leadership team.

“José is a tremendous human being,” said SUNY Canton's Head Men's Soccer Coach Timothy M. Penrod. “He is friendly, caring and truly a genuine young man. His passion for success is infectious, which is why our coaching staff is happy to let him lead on a daily basis.” Although he has a hectic schedule, Menendez still finds time to lend a hand during the annual “Hop to Help Day,” where student-athletes help elderly and disabled community members with landscaping and trash clean up. His most rewarding experience during his time at SUNY Canton was volunteering with the Special Olympics. “It was so touching,” he said. “It was the best thing I have ever done.” After graduation he plans to stay in the U.S. and perhaps start his own business. He is grateful for the opportunities that the College has afforded him. “Everyone here has been so supportive, and the professors here are always willing to help you if you need it. SUNY Canton has given me everything I need to succeed.”

8 AFTER CANTON Fall 2014 Magazine

President Zvi Szafran, Ph.D., believes the future is bright for

SUNY Canton and wants to lead the College toward becoming one of the most successful in the SUNY system. Upon beginning his tenure as the College’s fourth president in July, he shared his vision for guiding the school to its next phase by building upon the strong foundation set by his predecessors. “SUNY Canton has a rich heritage, and I believe the College has the potential to enjoy

rapid growth, while still being true to its core mission,” Szafran said. He believes one of the College’s fundamental strengths is that it is uniquely poised to benefit from the country’s increasing demand for graduates with strong applied skills in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, healthcare, criminal justice and emergency management. “There isn’t a student today who doesn’t need an education that fuses liberal arts with technology,”

Szafran said. “That’s exactly where our mission lies. It’s what industry demands and the country needs.” New MajorsIn order to capitalize further on contemporary job-market demands, he intends to broaden degree offerings within the Canino School of Engineering Technology. “We’re in the process of investigating the possibility of developing a mechatronics major,” he said.

of robotics and incorporates elements of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering.” He explained that mechatronic devices are omnipresent in today’s society – from iPhones to smart televisions. Other disciplines Szafran wants to expand upon reside in the computer science realm and also fit within SUNY Canton’s technology niche, such as applied computing and cybersecurity. The College’s close proximity to a computer game development industry hub in

SUNY Canton’s Next Chapter

Montreal offers a unique opportunity for SUNY Canton to explore a major in computer game design. While Szafran wants the College’s majors to keep pace with the ever-changing technological landscape, he is also drawing inspiration from the College’s agricultural heritage. “I am excited about exploring new programs in agricultural management and agricultural technology, as well as the possibility of reviving our hospitality management major,” he said. Reaching New MarketsBoosting recruitment efforts domestically and abroad is another priority for the new president. He believes SUNY Canton’s strong online presence can draw more adult learners who require a flexible learning environment, and partnering with foreign universities offers the potential to attract international students. “Several colleges are interested in working with us, particularly in the People’s Republic of China, Cameroon and Brazil.”

A Student-Centered PhilosophyAside from exploring new degrees and increasing recruitment efforts, Szafran is focusing on helping current students reach their full potential. A pilot project is underway to identify students who may be falling behind, so faculty can reach out to them and offer help. This type of positive intervention, he said, is aimed at improving retention and graduation rates. “This project helps us find the students who may be at risk and reach out to them before it’s too late.” Communicating and interacting with students is a priority for Szafran, and his weekly blog allows him to address their concerns, share news about the College, impart advice and reassure them that the entire campus community cares about their well-being and educational success. “I want students to know what a tremendous support system we have for them,” he said. “It starts with their residence hall director and goes straight up through our faculty. And if they are struggling with an issue that can't be resolved, they can come to me.”

Lydia C. Dale’s Graphic and Multimedia Design (GMMD) classmates said she was always a little bit strange.

Now the 2014 graduate has started her dream job with a company that thrives on oddity. She is working as an intellectual property creative coordinator for Guinness World Records Attractions, which is owned by Ripley’s Entertainment (also known as Ripley’s Believe It or Not) in Orlando, Fla.

Among her broad spectrum of responsibilities, she works on updating the Guinness World Records museums. “I do a lot of work picking out exciting and crazy records for our museums and then finding images and other multimedia for display,” she said. “This job has provided a lot of opportunities for me to meet and work with some pretty amazingly talented people.”

Dale noted that she met American strongman Chad Netherland, who broke the record for holding back two airplanes from taking flight and the record for the fastest time to escape from a pair of handcuffs, among other feats.

“On days when I'm in the office, I do a lot of image editing, designing concept illustrations, proofreading presentations, some basic video editing, prototyping and brainstorming,” she said. “And of course, there was the fun day when someone brought in a four-legged duck!”

Dale said the GMMD program’s emphasis on communications helped her land the position. She said that classes in photography, illustration and typography, and product design all helped her when she started with Guinness World Records.

“I think that SUNY Canton's GMMD program does an excellent job teaching students to value and recognize the importance of presentation,” she said. “Through this job, I've realized just how important presentation is in the business world. It's the difference between someone being willing to invest in your product or not.”

Dale was at the top of her class in the GMMD program. She received the 2014 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and produced the short movie “Learning How to Die” as her senior project. She was the vice president of the College’s student branch of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and was a graphic design intern in the College’s Public Relations Department. She is also a published photographer, writer and illustrator.

The SUNY Canton community bids a fond farewell to Daniel J. Sweeney `75, who recently retired after more than three decades of

service to SUNY Canton. During his tenure, he held the positions of residence hall director, director of residence life, associate dean of student life, dean of students and special assistant to the vice president for advancement. His responsibilities included Greek affairs and new student orientation. He recently talked about his career at SUNY Canton and future plans.

What has been the best part about your tenure at SUNY Canton?Interacting with students and having a positive affect on their lives has been the most rewarding aspect. Working in student affairs can be difficult sometimes – it requires patience to earn the students' respect and trust. It's certainly not something that happens overnight, but when students thank you for the work you have done, it's all worth it.

What's the biggest change you've seen at the College over the years? The advent of four-year degrees has been the biggest change. The diversity on campus has also improved as well, which creates a more enriching experience for everyone.

Can you share a funny moment from your career? We had an ill-mannered cat that

was causing havoc in the Pet Wing several years ago. We had to suspend him at the end of the semester.

What is your fondest memory? My fondest memories have to do with my family. My wife, Margaret, and I had our wedding reception at Chaney. Several years later, we lived off campus when she went into labor in the middle of the night. Our car was about to run out of gas and the lights stopped working, so we rushed to campus and borrowed [Vice President for Advancement] Dave Gerlach's car to get to the doctor.

What are you looking forward to during retirement?Being involved in community service, attending church events, gardening and spending time with my family. I'll also have fun deciding what day I'd like to mow the lawn.
