SIGNED & INSCRIBED BOOKS 1 Barker, Denis. UMZINTO CRICKET: the first 100 years. Durban: D. Barker, [1980]. xiv, 210 p. : ill., ports. Skivertex, d.w., rubbed & frayed on edges of spine. Signed

inscription from Barker on front free endpaper. R 150

Being part of the British Empire meant you played cricket! Umzinto (south of Durban) has a long tradition of playing cricket and its traditional rivals were Ilovo, Creighton, Underberg, Ixopo and Umzimkulu. The book records games played, wickets taken, bad pitches, good wickets and stalwart innings- similar histories have been written about cricket teams from towns south of Sydney, Christchurch, Bangalore, Lahore and Kingston. Only football is more widely played and no other sport pays such careful attention to statistics. Thus we know that on 16 December 1951 R.B. Archibald was bowled by Arbuthnot for 0 in the Umzinto A vs B match. In 1956/7 the MCC tour of South Africa was scheduled to play a game at the Umzinto ground, but it was cancelled by the Natal Cricket Association at a late date. A notable player was L.W. Payne, who toured Great Britain with the SA side under Alan Melville.

It took considerably longer for publishing to commence in 1831. Many of the Sechuana language works had been translated by Moffat, who also translated hymn books, tracts and the Bible (a task which took 29 years).

A modern South African classic set in the 1860s and 1870s. Fiela's child has two identities and two lives: he is Benjamin Kimoetie, a white foundling raised from the age of three by a black family in the Long Kloof region of South Africa; and when he is discovered by census-takers at the age of twelve, he becomes Lukas Van Rooyen, son of a poor white couple in the Knysna forest who reclaim him as the long-lost child who had strayed from their home.

Boksburg: D. Snowdon, [1922]. 41 p.: advertisements. Stiff paper wraps. Signed & dated inscription from Snowdon

on cover. R 1500

A collection of poems relating to the Rand strikes and the Labour movement. Donald Burgess Snowdon (?-1943) was from Benoni. A member of the Trade Union Council, he was imprisoned in Boksburg Gaol for three months along with 23 others after the 1922 Rand Revolt. These are his musings, some of which are entitled: "The red flag and the red revolt", "The informer", "Moscow", and "The church and the red flag". The poems are full of references to events during the Revolt, and his disgust with the powerful and wealthy is apparent. Yet he points out in his introduction that the tradespeople of Benoni had fed and clothed him and had placed advertisements which had allowed him to print the 2000 copies of this work! Amongst the firms which had supported him and his family were Ackermans, Beveland's Boot Store, Henderson & Mitchell's Men's and Boys' Outfitters, Wm Garrie's Bakery (which had "the most up-to-date dough mixer installed, granolithic floors and bread acceptable to the most fastidious"), East Rand Timber, M. Ostrofsky ("16 years in Benoni and never a misfit"), Colonial Banking, James Kenney (agents for the famous Woodrow hats) and Tom Jones, tobacconist. Snowdon suggested that the advertisers be rewarded for their support: "Therefore, comrades, carefully scan the advertisements and spend your money where you see plainly that there is still a little of the milk of human kindness". A fascinating piece of Africana. "The people's flag is still unfurled / It's waving now throughout the world / The Corner House is quite alarmed / because the Reds are not disarmed. Chorus: Then raise the scarlet standard high! / Within its shade we'll live or die / Tho' cowards flinch and traitors sneer / we'll keep the red flag flying here!"

The PRECIS… focus on genealogical information, in that the memorials were requests made by the Cape residents to the Council of Policy. Leibbrandt (1867-1911), founder of the South African Archives, saw his mission as Cape government archivist as being the dissemination of the information contained within the archives. He was undaunted by the size of the task and began by publishing the PRECIS. Only the first two volumes were published before his death. In 1983 uncorrected proofs for the letters P-R and some pages of S & T were found in the Government Printer's Cape Town office. The South African Library received permission to complete the work, and together with two supplements from the years 1777 and 1792-95 (compiled by Archives officials in the 1920s) and an index, produced the last three volumes. Principally a portrait painter, Sandra McGregor was introduced to District Six in 1962, and for the next eighteen years she worked amongst the people there, recording their lives and the area. As a young white woman this was considered a dangerous pastime, but the community welcomed and protected her, calling her 'onse artist'. "She captured for us what it was like to be a Capetonian in the days before the removals. The part of Cape Town she painted no longer exists, except perhaps in the District Six Museum, and St George's Cathedral… Dolores Fleischer has given us an unusual insight into the struggles of a woman born into privilege and contending with love and loss." Baker provides rare insight into Rhodes and his views. Baker (1862-1946) grew up in rural Kent and trained at the Royal Academy. He appreciated traditional materials and workmanship; Rhodes had rustic tastes and did not like "gimmicks" or materials imported from Europe. They met on board ship en route to South Africa in 1892. As their visions coincided, Rhodes commissioned Baker to remodel Groote Schuur, thus starting Baker's prestigious career. Rhodes wanted original unpainted woods, whitewashed

Baker's success in South Africa (The Union Buildings in Pretoria, Grey College in Bloemfontein, Pretoria Station, Rhodes University in Grahamstown and Rhodes Memorial on the slopes of Table Mountain) led him to design buildings in India (Parliament House, New Delhi), Great Britain (South Africa House, India House, a grandstand at Lords, Rhodes House at Oxford), Belgium (Tyre Cot Cemetary), Kenya, France and Australia. Baker is buried at Westminister Cathedral.

As a young man just out of Oxford, Sampson "...helped to make Africa a world issue through THE OBSERVER. He cared about Africa in a way that is rare among those from the developed world, and he never stopped caring" Nelson Mandela. Jim Bailey hired Sampson to replace Bob Crisp as editor of DRUM in 1951. Circulation increased hugely under Sampson, and its emphasis moved from a paternalistic view to portraying black South Africans as being at the cutting edge of fashion, thinking and doing on the continent. Sampson also emphasised images allowing the illiterate to participate in the experience and thus launched the careers of Ernest Cole, Bob Gosani, Alf Kumalo, Peter Magubane and Jurgen Schadeberg.

114 South Africa. Department of the Interior. AT THY CALL… Pretoria: Government Printer, [198-].

[12] p.: col. ill. Pict. cloth with window cut for col. ill. "With compliments of the Department of the Interior on the occasion of your acquisition of South African citizenship". R 500

Presented to Sheena Duncan (1932-2010). Duncan was born in Johannesburg, but studied in Scotland before working in Rhodesia for eight years. Upon her return to South Africa, she joined the Black Sash, working her way up to being its National President. She was also active in the Anglican Church, the South African Council of Churches and Gun Free South Africa. Duncan must have applied for South African citizenship since this booklet was presented "on the occasion of your acquisition of South African citizenship" and is stamped on behalf of the Department of the Interior. Her name has been handwritten on the title page. Of interest is that Duncan has underlined certain passages which she obviously felt were not being applied by the National Party. For example: "By your adoption of South African citizenship, you have pledged your allegiance and loyalty not merely to the government of this country but also to a human society- the South African nation" is underlined in red from the word 'but". In another section she has underlined "I have the right to freedom of speech and of conscience" and "I have the right to invoke the protection of an impartial court when my rights are placed in jeopardy". A poignant item, bearing in mind her struggle of over half a century against the injustices she perceived.

A group photograph of the eighteen civilian men invitied on the visit, accompanied by two SADF officers, posed on the steps of an aeroplane at Waterkloof Airforce Base prior to departure for Rundu. [The group included retired generals Gen. C.L. du Toit DSO & Maj. Gen. K.R. van der Spuy, CBE, MC]. 5. The itinerary / programme: Waterkloof-Rundu-Omega; Omega-Mpacha; Mpacha-Waterkloof. Includes a map of the area. 6. A booklet, SOUTH WEST AFRICA / NAMIBIA: a general introduction. 7. A booklet: SEKTOR 20: KAVANGO. Includes details of a visit to 202 BN and mine demonstration. 8. Booklet: 31 BATTALION, visit souvenir. 9. A booklet, SECTOR / SEKTOR 70, visit souvenir. 10. Copy of letter of thanks addressed to the Minister of Defence. 11. Photostat of an article from the SUNDAY TIMES magazine dated 12 October 1980, in which the columnist, Madeleine van Biljon, describes her visit to the operational area which paralleled that of the recipient of the folder. The skivertex folder containing these items bears the SADF colours and badge, as well as the logo of the sponsor, United Building Society. The SADF obviously wanted to show prominent South Africans what they had achieved on the Border, in an attempt to counter the bad publicity generated by events in that region. They invited people they believed to be in

These expensive trips, funded by taxpayers, did not reach many people and could not have had much influence on broader events. The majority of the men on this particular trip were ex-military men who would not have been likely to oppose the Border War in any event!

Theal (1837-1919) was born in New Brunswick, Canada and disembarked in Cape Town whilst en route to Australia in 1861 (although he went to England, Europe and Canada in later years, he never made it to Australia!). He became an historian via journalism, which he began practising whilst in King William's Town. He later taught and worked at the press in Lovedale. In his work he drew initially on oral material and later on archival sources located in magisterial and government offices. He was given the honorary title of Colonial Historiographer in 1891 and worked on various histories until 10 minutes before his death (according to his friend, George Cory). He was concerned with the issues of land and community, opposing the state's programme of removals as chairman of the Association for Rural Advancement in the 1970s and 80s; and in his development work with African farmers in the 1990s.

Tells the story of the first decade after Union. Duncan was a respected politician in the new Union government, his career culminating in the position of South Africa's first Governor-General. He engaged in a thirty-seven year correspondence with Maud, Lady Selborne, who was deeply interested in politics and South Africa in particular. The parallels with current South Africa are hard to miss: "… in 1910 the 'new South Afrca' seemed almost miraculous. Bitter enemies agreed to start afresh and painfully negotiated a new constitution… political leadership emerged preaching reconciliation; change had to be accepted and worked at every level, new symbols of nationhood were painfully evolved." Walmsley (1892-1966) was an observer who flew extensively during the East African Campaign of WWI. His task was to sketch enemy positions whilst his pilot dodged clouds, flak and mountains. The planes were underpowered, temperamental and prone to stalling at difficult times. However, in comparison to the infantry, Walsley felt that they had a relatively easy time of it: "we were feeding on the products of Fortnum and Mason, grumbling when we had to take water with our whisky instead of Schweppes". Preface. For long periods he flew out of isolated, hastily constructed airfields in support of South African and K.A.R. forces. Some of his pilots were South African (Steenkamp and Van der Spuy amongst others). He also flew with the famous hunter, W.D.M. Bell. In his REMINISCENCES… Von Lettow Vorbeck describes how his marches were relentlessly followed by aircraft- Walmsley's was one of these! It was difficult to move from airfield to airfield and sometimes the plane was taken to pieces and carried (together with parts, ammunition, petrol and other stores) on the heads of porters. Walmsley describes these marches through tropical heat and on the highlands where they woke up to frost or encountered rain so heavy that they could not walk through the downpour. He brings an acute and sensitive eye to his experiences, describing losing colleagues and dealing with South African infantry commanders who, in his opinion, did not utilize the intelligence he was risking life and limb to obtain, getting lost in the air and on the ground and suffering repeated malaria attacks. The book is illustrated with an example of his 3D sketching and a number of photographs he took of the jungle and enemy positions. His "Kodak" served him well in another sense too. After one long march, he went exploring and was caught in a heavy mist. He fell down a cliff and only managed to hang on and clamber back up because his Kodak strap had hooked on an outcrop! He vividly relates the stresses of his daily tasks, when even the simplest air reconnaissance could be their last and he brings an important understanding of an oft overlooked aspect of the German East Africa Campaign. He was mentioned in despatches four times and awarded the Military Cross. After his discharge from the military, he lived by the pen and became a successful and prolific novelist.

PHOTO STORY BOOKS These little books enjoyed huge popularity in South Africa in the 1970s and 1980s, before the advent of television and daily soap operas. Actors portray a story through a series of

still photographs, with captions and speech or thought bubbles added. A dilemma is faced and a solution found; adversity or criminals are overcome. With romantic intrigue and

patriotic themes, these photo story books were published weekly and served to encourage reading amongst those who might otherwise not have read at all.
