What is a colony? South Carolina became a colony in 1720. A colony is a place that is settled by people from another

country. Most of these people were from England and were still under England’s rule. The English settlers were not the only people

living in colonial South Carolina. Who else was here? Let’s read and find out!

Farmers Most of the settlers made a living by farming and trading. The farmers grew wheat and vegetables in the backcountry. They sent their crops on a

wagon to the port, a large dock for boats, to be traded with other colonies. This was a lot of work, so children often had to help their family take care of the farm and did not have time to go to school.

Plantation Owners Other settlers grew crops like rice and indigo on large plantations. A plantation is where large amounts of crops are grown, like a farm. It is different from a farm though because slaves did all of the work for free which made the plantation owners very wealthy, or rich. The plantation owner’s children went to school and some had tutors to help them at home, too. Many plantation owners lived near large cities, like

Charleston. Charleston was one of the largest and richest cities. It had newspapers, a theater, a library, a port, and a museum. Many plantation owners lived here.

African Slaves Slaves were brought from Barbados and Africa to do all of the hard work on the large plantations. The slaves were not paid, they did not get much to eat, and they had very little clothing to wear. It was illegal, or against the law, to teach a slave to read or write, so they were not allowed to go to school.

Native Americans In the beginning, most of the Native Americans were friendly to the settlers. The settlers traded their weapons and tools for the furs that the Native Americans had. However, the settlers continued to take the land that the Native Americans were living

on and this made them angry. The Native Americans believed that the land belonged to everyone and that it should be shared. The Europeans did not agree and they believed that people should own the land. This caused many wars between the Native Americans and the settlers: Yemassee War- The Yemassee fought back against the settlers when they tried to take over the land in Beaufort. Eventually, the Yemassee were forced off of the land and out of the state. Cherokee War- When the farmers moved toward the upcountry, they met the Cherokee. The Cherokee did not want to the settlers to take their land, so they fought over the land for four years. These wars killed many Native Americans. Other Native Americans were killed by diseases that the Europeans brought over from their countries.
