SPECIAL INTEREST SAFARIS Migration Safari

This safari has been especially designed to track the progress of the annual wildebeest migration in Kenya and Tanzania. Dubbed the ‘Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth’, the migration features a cast of millions, covers an 800-kilometer circuit, and weaves birth, life and death into a spectacular tapestry, which illustrates the concept of ‘the survival of the fittest’ in all of its tragic, comic, violent and awesome splendour. Typically scheduled for July-October, this exceptionally popular tour sets out from Nairobi and is guided by Christopher Nyambu for the Kenyan circuit and Francis Kembo for the Tanzania circuit – both are proficient and outstanding safari guides. Travelling by road, the tour allows our visitors to experience both the thrill of a luxury tented camp and the comfort of a traditional safari lodge. Crossing from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara, it also enables the visitor to follow in the footsteps of the migration.

He is professionally accredited by the Tanzania Tour Guides Association and is a conservationist at heart with a profound love for what he does. About the wildebeest migration Between the end of July and November, over one and a half million wildebeest accompanied by half again as many zebras and gazelles, migrate from the short-grass plains of the Serengeti to fresh pasture in the grasslands of the Mara; thus creating one of nature’s grandest spectacles. Moving in groups of up to 20,000 at a time they thunder across the plateau hesitating only briefly to cross the Mara River, where many fall prey to the waiting crocodiles. Towards the end of October they begin crossing back into Tanzania. The actual timing of the migration, however, is dictated by the weather and does not always run to schedule. Offering an abundance of herbivores, the Mara makes the ideal hunting ground for Kenya’s famous ‘big cats’ and hosts her largest population of lions. It also offers the best chance of spotting a leopard in the wild. Other predators include cheetah and spotted hyena.

Migration Safari Schedule Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to the 5-star hotel The Boma. Dinner (not included) can be taken at the hotel or at any of the city’s many restaurants. Overnight at the hotel. Day 2: Nairobi to Lake Nakuru After breakfast, drive to Lake Nakuru National Park in time for a late lunch at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp. After lunch, enjoy a game drive in the park before returning to the camp in time for a swim and dinner. Optional: You may choose to enjoy evening cocktails before dinner at extra cost. As Kenya’s first and largest rhino sanctuary, sightings of both black and white rhino are almost guaranteed, while plentiful waterbuck, warthog, zebra, gazelle and buffalo graze the shoreline. Echoing to the haunting cries of the numerous fish eagles, this is also the park in which you have the best chance of seeing a leopard. The lake is renowned as ‘The greatest bird spectacle on earth’ thanks to the

millions of fuchsia-pink flamingo that flocked to feed on the teeming algae of its alkaline waters. The pink-frosted shores and sky-mirrored waters yielded some of the most evocatively beautiful photo-images in Africa. Now the lake’s water levels have risen and the algae is thinned out prompting the flamingos to temporarily shift base. Distance/drive time: 185 km / 3½ hours

Day 3: On safari in Lake Nakuru National Park Spend the entire day game-driving in the park, which was established as Kenya's first rhino sanctuary. The Park now hosts one of the largest black rhino concentrations in the country and substantial numbers of white rhino have also been introduced. About Lake Nakuru Sunk deep in the cleft of the Great Rift Valley, one of earth's most phenomenal geological features, ringed by shoals of extinct and dormant volcanoes and presided over by the Menengai Crater, one of the largest craters in the world, lie the turquoise-shimmering waters of Lake Nakuru. Flamingo-frosted, salt-encrusted, acacia-haloed and guarded by the prehistoric splendour of a grey-green forest of Euphorbia candelabrum, Lake Nakuru National Park offers sanctuary to some of the world's most endangered creatures. As a Kenya safari destination, Lake Nakuru ranks as one of the most popular destinations in the Great Rift Valley.

Because the Park is so compact, game density is high and wildlife encounters are plentiful. This is also the Park where you are most likely to see a leopard while the high numbers of lion make sightings a real possibility. In the woodland forests watch out for endangered Rothschild's giraffe, colobus monkey, rhino and the odd striped hyena. In the bushlands look for eland, steenbok, impala and reedbuck while on the cliffs and escarpment you may see dik dik, rock hyrax and klipspringer. On the lake you can enjoy the antics of the small hippo herd whilst on the lakeshore you'll find numerous waterbuck, reedbuck and zebra. In the southern part of the park look out for eland, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara Leaving the camp after breakfast, continue up the floor of Rift to arrive in the famous Masai Mara National Reserve. Lunch will be served at the Sarova Mara Game Camp. After lunch, enjoy your first game-drive in the Mara. World renowned for the breath-taking spectacle of ‘the greatest wildlife show on earth’, the awe inspiring annual migration of the wildebeest, the Mara is Kenya’s most visited protected area. Technically an extension of Tanzania’s renowned Serengeti National Park, the Mara constitutes only 4% of the entire Serengeti ecosystem but its rolling grasslands, meandering rivers and towering escarpments offer one of the world’s most rewarding and evocative wildlife arenas. Proceed for check-in to the Mara Serena Safari Lodge, which stands high on a hill with spectacular views of the river and plains. Distance/drive time: 290 km / 5hours Day 5: On safari in the Masai Mara Spend the day on safari in the Mara with morning and afternoon game drives. Historically teaming with wildlife, the Mara is famous for the large herds of elephant and buffalo that meander its plains; also for the fat pods of hippo that wallow in its mud-brown rivers. Other stars include the distinctive Masai giraffe, plum-coloured topi, Coke’s hartebeest, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelle, zebra, impala, Kirk’s dik-dik, bushbuck, waterbuck and red duiker. The Reserve also boasts plentiful Nile crocodile, monitor lizard, baboon, vervet, blue and red-tailed monkeys, nocturnal bush babies, and tree hyrax. All meals and overnight at Mara Serena Safari Lodge Day 6 On safari in the Masai Mara Setting off after an early morning cup of tea, enjoy a fascinating game drive into the bush. Drop off at Hippo Pool for breakfast. Not many experiences are as memorable, or as typically Kenyan, as breakfast by the Hippo Pool where, a full English breakfast will be cooked before you. Enjoy a glass of chilled ‘buck’s fizz’ while you watch the hippos in the river below. Proceed with game drive. Lunch and afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at Mara Serena Safari Lodge Day 7: On safari in the Masai Mara Spend the day on safari in the Mara with morning and afternoon game drives. All meals and overnight at Mara Serena Safari Lodge Day 8: End of the Kenyan course of the safari AND beginning of the Tanzanian course On this day, the safari ventures into Tanzania, marking the end of the Kenyan bit of the safari. Being the safari is now offered in two courses, our guests can explore the option of either taking the Kenyan circuit only, or enjoying both the Kenya and Tanzania tours of the safari. Day 8: Mara to Nairobi (for clients not proceeding to Tanzania) Breakfast at your lodge. The lodge will transfer clients to the local airstrip for your scheduled flight departing at 11h00 for Nairobi Wilson. 12h15 met on arrival at Wilson airport and transfer to Carnivore Restaurant for lunch. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight. Day 8: Mara into Tanzania and onto Lake Victoria (for clients proceeding to Tanzania) After breakfast drive to the border crossing between Kenya and Tanzania at Isebania then drive to the shores of Lake Victoria with a picnic lunch on the way. Check into the Serenity on the Lake. Dinner at the lodge. Day 9: Lake Victoria to Serengeti After breakfast explore Lake Victoria with 1.5hour canoe ride and visit to local fish village. Depart and drive to the Serengeti National Park and arrive at the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge. Set high on the saddle of tree-clad ridge commanding panoramic views across the

endless plains of the Serengeti, the lodge draws its inspiration from the circular ‘Rondavel’ dwellings and winding paths of a traditional Maasai village. Below the Lodge is a sky-blue pool and a hilltop vantage point from which to view the world famous annual ‘migration’. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. About the Serengeti Covering 14,763 sq. km of endlessly rolling savannah plains, the Serengeti is Tanzania’s first-established, largest and most famous park wherein tens of thousands of hoofed animals roam in a constant and unremitting search for the fresh grasslands upon which their survival depends. Distance/drive time: 250km / 5 hours

Day 10: On safari in the Serengeti With a full day on safari (morning and afternoon game drives included) your options are wide. The Serengeti, whose Maasai name ‘Siringet’ translates as ‘the endless plains’, offers unparalleled ornithological opportunities and an unrivalled natural arena wherein the glory and harmony of nature can be appreciated as nowhere else on earth. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the lodge. Day 11: To the Ngorongoro Crater via Olduvai Gorge After breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive as you leave the Serengeti with picnic lunch and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area via Olduvai Gorge. Popularly known as the ‘Cradle of Mankind’, Olduvai is the site of one of the most important and controversial Palaeolithic finds in recent history. In the late afternoon, arrive at the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, a unique lodge clinging to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. Designed to blend completely into the landscape, it is entirely invisible from the floor of the Crater 600 metres below. Dinner and overnight at the lodge. About the crater Often referred to as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’ the Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s best-known wildlife arenas. A World Heritage Site, it is also one of the largest volcanic craters in the world (almost 20 kilometres wide, 610-760 metres deep and covering a total area of 264 square kilometres). An utterly unique biosphere, the Crater harbours grasslands, swamps, forests, saltpans, a fresh water lake and a glorious variety of birdlife, all enclosed within its towering walls. Due to its high concentration of wildlife, close-range viewing opportunities and striking scenery it is also Tanzania’s most visited destination. Distance/drive time: 150 km / 3 hours Day 12: Ngorongoro to Arusha After breakfast drive to Arusha - at the foot of the wooded slopes of Mount Meru. Check in to the Mount Meru Hotel, a modern hotel nestled against one of the most majestic backdrops of the picturesque Mount Meru, sister peak to Africa's highest summit, Mount Kilimanjaro. Lunch and afternoon will be at leisure. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. Distance/drive time: 190 km / 4.5 hours Day 13: Depart After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flights.

Day 2: Nairobi to Samburu After an early breakfast, drive north of Nairobi up the Great Rift Valley to the Samburu/Buffalo Springs National Reserve arriving in time for a late lunch at the Ashnil Samburu Camp which features 24 tents. The tents are widely spaced along the banks of the Uwaso Nyiro River, surrounded by doum palms and acacia trees. The main guest area, also shaded by a canopy of acacia trees, offers a comfortable reception and lounge, a spacious dining room, atmospheric bar and a broad deck, which offers unparalleled game-viewing across the wide reaches of the Uwaso Nyiro River, which is the lifeblood of this otherwise arid northern region. Dinner and overnight at the camp. Distance/drive time: 380 km / 5½ hours

Day 3: On safari in Samburu

Enjoy a full day on safari in Samburu (morning and afternoon game drives). In the evening, there is an option of sundowners before dinner in the central dining room. A place of endless skies, dust-red plains and palm-fringed rivers, Samburu National Reserve lies on the fringes of the vast and arid desert once known as the Northern Frontier District, whose heat-scorched scrublands extend all the way to the jade-green waters of Lake Turkana and beyond. Physically dramatic, the 104 sq km landscape of the Reserve features rocky battlements, craggy scarps, dry river beds and fallen boulders rising out of the thorn scrub against a backdrop of the far-distant hills and the great red table mountain known as Ololokwe.

Day 4: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Leave the camp after breakfast and travel south to Nanyuki and check-in to Sweetwaters Tented Camp. A sheltered oasis, clustered around a water hole and set in the pristine calm of the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sweetwaters offers a charming blend of under-canvas ambiance and safari luxury. Located on the plains of Mount Kenya, the camp features thirty-nine luxury tents, each with its own private veranda overlooking the water hole. The central Rhino Restaurant, housed in the former manager's house of this once colonial farm offers both regional and international cuisine. Also within the house is the Kashoggi Bar and lounge, which centers on a blazing log fire. The Waterhole Bar, built in the style of a game-viewing hide, overlooks the waterhole and offers unrivalled wildlife-watching. Distance/drive time: 220km / 3 hours

Day 5: Ol Pejeta to Lake Naivasha After breakfast, drive south to Lake Naivasha in time for lunch at the charmingly located Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge. The lodge stands in 120 acres of lakeside land, most of which is covered in green riparian meadows, which sweep down to the shores of the lake, one of the most beautiful in the Great Rift Valley. A jetty has been built out onto the lake, from where guests can watch the antics of the hippos in the lake and experience 360 degree views, which include Crescent Island, Mount Longonot, the Mau Escarpment and the misty outline of the Aberdares. The grounds are alive with a colourful selection of birds, and the trees with monkeys. Afternoon crescent Island walk. About Lake Naivasha A freshwater lake, the highest of the string of lakes that glitter down the vast trench of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha is infamous for its rapidly shifting moods. Enigmatic, and dotted with floating islands of Nile cabbage (water hyacinth) and papyrus, Lake Naivasha has no known outlet, and legends abound regarding the vast tunnels that supposedly run beneath its surface. Towered over by the brooding bulk of Mount Longonot (2,776 m), and featuring a submerged volcanic crater known as Crescent Island, this beautiful lake is best known for its high numbers of water birds. Also for the haunting cry of the fish eagles, which feed on the black bass and tilapia of its waters. Distance/drive time: 240 km / 3.5 hours

Day 6: Lake Naivasha to the Masai Mara Leaving the lodge after breakfast, continue up the floor of Rift to arrive in the famous Masai Mara National Reserve, and at the Ashnil Mara Camp in time for a late lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy your first game-drive in the Mara. World renowned for the breathtaking spectacle of ‘the greatest wildlife show on earth’, the awe inspiring annual migration of the wildebeest, the Mara is Kenya’s most visited protected area. Returning to the camp, enjoy some relaxation on your private veranda, sundowners and dinner in the central restaurant. Distance/drive time: 365 km / 5½ hours

Day 7: On safari in the Mara

Spend all day on safari in the reserve with morning and afternoon game drives and breakfast, lunch and dinner at the lodge. When it comes to game-viewing, there is nowhere in Africa richer in wildlife or more eventful in encounters than the Mara. A pristine wilderness of haunting beauty, it promises its visitors a profusion of wildlife, prolific bird life and the unprecedented opportunity of catching up with all the members of the ‘Big Five’ in one morning.

Day 8: The Mara to Nairobi After breakfast at the lodge, drive to Nairobi and take lunch at the world famous Carnivore Restaurant, rated among the top 500 restaurants in the world. Depart for your flight home. Distance/drive time: 265 km / 4½ hours

Endlessly panoramic, yet comparatively compact, it is dotted with emerald green swamps in which great herds of elephant wallow; half submerged in the papyrus grasses. The permanent marshlands also provide a potent draw to hippos and buffaloes, while offering a haven for the abundant water birds. An International Biosphere Reserve, the park largely constitutes the usually dried-out lakebed of Lake Amboseli, which is surrounded by flat grasslands relieved by very few trees. On the plains are numerous antelopes, spotted hyenas, jackals, warthogs, olive baboons and vervet monkeys. Lions are rare. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive then return to the lodge for perhaps an evening sundowner (at extra cost). About Tsavo East National Park The joint mass of Tsavo East and West National Parks forms one of the largest national parks in the world and covers a massive 4% of Kenya's total land area. Tsavo East, the larger of the two, lies equidistant between Nairobi and Mombasa and is one of the last great wilderness safari landscapes on Earth. A dramatically presented theatre of the wild, this safari destination offers a vast arena of parched scrub and heat-shimmering bush which is washed by the azure waters and emerald-fringed meanderings of the Galana River, guarded by the limitless lava reaches of the Yatta Plateau and patrolled by some of the largest safari elephant herds in the world. For those who love birding, Tsavo East's prolific bird life features 500 recorded species. Commonly seen birds are African skimmer, goshawk, red and yellow bishop, palm nut vulture and the white-headed buffalo weaver. Distance/drive time: 130 km / 2 hours

With picnic lunch, drive to the Serengeti National Park and enjoy an afternoon’s game drive before checking into the Serengeti Sopa Lodge. Dinner at the lodge

Distance/drive time: 205 km / 4 hours

Day 3: On safari in the Serengeti Enjoy a full day’s game driving around the vast and sensational Serengeti, which covers 14,763 sq km of endlessly rolling savannah plains and is Tanzania’s most famous park wherein tens of thousands of hoofed animals roam in a constant and unremitting search for the fresh grasslands upon which their survival depends. The million-plus wildebeest are the predominant herbivore and also the main prey of a huge cast of large carnivores, principally lion and hyena. Whilst the annual migration is the Serengeti’s most famous attraction, the Park is also renowned for its lion, many of which have been fitted with radio-transmitter collars so that their movements may be tracked, and additionally for its wealth of cheetah, zebra, giraffe, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, eland, impala, klipspringer, hippo and warthog. All meals at the lodge.

The Migration Twice a year, propelled by the rains, 1.3 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelle gather in the Serengeti to undertake an 800 km trek to new grazing lands. The precise timing of the migration varies but generally the herbivores congregate and move out at the end of May, sometimes over a period of weeks, sometimes over a period of as little as three or four days. They then head west on the first leg of a roughly triangular 800-km circuit that takes approximately 3-4 months and ends in the Masai Mara National Reserve of Kenya. When the grazing here is exhausted the tide of herbivores turns and reverses its progress returning to the short grass plains of Tanzania.

Day 4: Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater Leave the Serengeti and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area via Olduvai Gorge the ‘cradle of mankind’, and site of one of the most important and controversial Palaeolithic finds in recent history. Continue into the crater for an afternoon tour and picnic lunch. Often referred to as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’ the Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s best-known wildlife arenas. In the late afternoon, ascend to the rim of the crater and drive to your lodge for check-in at the Ngorongoro Farm House. Dinner at the farm house.

Distance/drive time: 150 km / 3 hours

Day 5: Lunch in Arusha After breakfast, drive to Arusha arriving in time for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flights.

Day 3: On safari in Samburu Enjoy a full day on safari in Samburu (morning and afternoon game drives).

Enigmatic, and dotted with floating islands of Nile cabbage (water hyacinth) and papyrus, Lake Naivasha has no known outlet, and legends abound regarding the vast tunnels that supposedly run beneath its surface. Towered over by the

brooding bulk of Mount Longonot (2,776 m), and featuring a submerged volcanic crater known as Crescent Island, this beautiful lake is best known for its high numbers of water birds. East Africa Highlights Safari Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to the 5-star hotel The Boma. Dinner (not included) can be taken at the hotel or at any of the cities many restaurants. Day 2: Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Ranch Leave the hotel after breakfast and travel north to Mount Kenya and enter the Serena Sweetwaters Tented Camp - Morani room. The camp is gathered around a waterhole and features two rows of tents, which are reached via a series of stone pathways, which wind through our landscaped grounds. The camp has 39 luxury tents, each with its own ensuite bathroom (hot and cold running water, 24-hour hot showers and flushed WCs). All our tents have luxury canvas interiors, solid floors and separate thatched roofs. Electricity is provided by 24 hour generator. 14 of our tents are on raised platforms with private balconies, the rest have private verandas, all with safari chairs and tables. Extra beds and cots can also be provided. Each tent features either a king-sized double bed or two twins. Mosquito nets are provided, as are hot water bottles at night. About Ol Pejeta Ranch Ol Pejeta Game Conservancy boats a higher wildlife-to-area ratio than any of Kenya's national parks, the camp offers unprecedented opportunities for wildlife watching, either by guided walks, camel treks, or by day and night game drives, while likely sightings include all the members of ‘The Big Five' (elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard).

Distance/drive time: 220km / 3½ hours

Day 3: On safari in Ol Pejeta Enjoy an entire day exploring the pristine calm of the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy with game drives, Rhino Sanctuary and Chimpanzee sanctuary visits. Optional activities: Guided bush walks, bird watching, local community visits and so many more activities here. About Ol Pejeta Game Conservancy Situated between the foot hills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya, the 110,000-acre private wilderness of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of wildlife, including all the members of the ‘Big Five' (the endangered black and white rhino , leopard, elephant, buffalo and lion). Offering one of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya and a higher wildlife to acre ratio than any Kenyan national park, the conservancy offers sanctuary to a number of endangered species, most notably the rare Grevy's zebra and the Jackson's hartebeest. The largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, the conservancy also hosts the only sanctuary for chimpanzees in Kenya.

Day 4: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru After breakfast, drive to Lake Nakuru National Park in time for a late lunch at Flamingo Hill Tented Camp. After lunch, enjoy a game drive in the park before returning to the camp in time for a swim and dinner. Optional: Enjoy evening cocktails at extra cost.

The lake is renowned as ‘The greatest bird spectacle on earth’ thanks to the millions of fuchsia-pink flamingo that flocked to feed on the teeming algae of its alkaline waters. The pink-frosted shores and sky-mirrored waters yielded some of the most evocatively beautiful photo-images in Africa. Now the lake’s water levels have risen and the algae is thinned out prompting the flamingos to temporarily migrate.

Distance/drive time: 200 km / 3 hours Day 5: On safari in Lake Nakuru

After breakfast, day spent at Lake Nakuru National Park with game viewing. All meals and overnight at the camp.

Day 6: Lake Nakuru to the Mara After breakfast depart very early and drive to the Masai Mara National Reserve and into Sarova Mara for lunch. After lunch, enjoy your first game drive in the Mara as you drive to your camp, Ashnil Mara Camp, which offers 30 luxury tents close to the Mara River. In the evening, perhaps take an early swim before proceeding for dinner and thereafter overnight Offering an abundance of herbivores, the Mara makes the ideal hunting ground for Kenya’s famous ‘big cats’ and hosts her largest population of lions. It also offers the best chance of spotting a leopard in the wild. Other predators include cheetah and spotted hyena. The Reserve also boasts plentiful Nile crocodile, monitor lizard, baboon, vervet; blue and red-tailed monkeys, nocturnal bush babies, and tree hyrax. There are over 550 resident and migratory species of birds.

Distance/drive time: 350 km / 5½ hours Day 7: On safari in the Mara Spend all day on safari in the reserve with morning and afternoon game drives. The camp offers a list of optional activities and facilities that are an excellent complement to your safari: a swimming pool, Guided Nature Walks with an in-house naturalist, in-house cultural activities, sundowners, Hippo Pool breakfast with 'bubbly' (sparkling wine), bush & riverside dinners, massage services. All meals and overnight at Ashnil Mara Camp. Day 8: Mara into Tanzania and onto Lake Victoria After breakfast drive to the border cross between Kenya and Tanzania at Isabenia then drive to the shores of Lake Victoria with a picnic lunch on the way. Check into the Serenity on the Lake. Dinner at the lodge. Distance/drive time: 470 km / 8½ hours Day 9: Lake Victoria to Serengeti After breakfast explore Lake Victoria with 1.5hour canoe ride and visit to local fish village. Depart and drive to the Serengeti National Park and to Mbuzi Mawe Serena Camp which is scenically located in a glade, known as ‘the place of the klipspringer’ (mbuzi mawe), and guarded by three million year-old granite towers. The camp is cleverly located on one of the main annual migration corridors. Enjoy lunch and afternoon game drive, dinner and overnight at the camp.

About the Serengeti Covering 14,763 sq km of endlessly rolling savannah plains, the Serengeti is Tanzania’s first-established, largest and most famous park wherein tens of thousands of hoofed animals roam in a constant and unremitting search for the fresh grasslands upon which their survival depends. Distance/drive time: 250km / 5 hours Day 10: On safari in the Serengeti With a full day on safari (morning and afternoon game drives included) your options are wide. The Serengeti, whose Maasai name ‘Siringet’ translates as ‘the endless plains’, offers unparalleled ornithological opportunities and an unrivalled natural arena wherein the glory and harmony of nature can be appreciated as nowhere else on earth. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the camp.

Distance/drive time: 150 km / 3 hours Day 12: Ngorongoro to Arusha After breakfast drive to Arusha - to the foot of the wooded slopes of Mount Meru. Check-in to the Mount Meru Hotel, a modern hotel nestled against one of the most majestic backdrops – the Mount Meru. Lunch and afternoon will be at leisure. Dinner and overnight at the hotel Distance/drive time: 223 km / 4.5 hours Day 13: Depart After breakfast, transfer to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flights.

Tanzania Deluxe Safari Schedule Day 1: Arrive in Arusha On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by your driver/guide and escorted to the charming Lake Duluti Serena, which stands on the shores of Lake Duluti with views of Mount Meru. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 2: To Tarangire National Park After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park in time for lunch at Kikoti Camp. Kikoti, in the Maasai language, means "the place where life began", and is the name given by the local Maasai to an ancient pre-Jurassic kopje in the Tarangire eco-system, which lies adjacent to the camp. A luxury tented camp, Kikoti echoes the luxury of the traditional safari camps of a bygone era, defined by superior service and campfire hospitality rather than modern conveniences and an anonymous welcome. Kikoti's proximity to Tarangire National Park also allows the guests to enjoy a wide choice of exploratory game-drives through the classic African savannah and acacia parkland of this undiscovered wilderness.

Moreover, its position in the migratory corridor just outside the park provides a range of activities that are forbidden elsewhere in the game lands of Northern Tanzania. These include; nature walks, foot safaris and extended bush trekking with rangers, all of which offer unique opportunities to revisit nature in her primeval state. Located on a community conservation area, a portion of all accommodation rates goes to the local community, who use it for community-chosen development projects such as schools, water boreholes, roads and dispensaries. After lunch enjoy a game drive in Tarangire before arriving back in camp in time for sundowners and dinner.

Distance/drive time: 165km / 2 hours

Day 3: On Safari in Tarangire Spend a full day on safari in Tarangire National Park with morning and afternoon game drives. Second only to the Ngorongoro Crater as a dry-season (June/July) sanctuary for vast herds of migratory creatures, the park’s wildlife tend to follow clearly defined seasonal patterns. First to move north-east, often as far as Lake Natron, are the zebras and wildebeests, which begin their trek in October. After them, trek the gazelles, buffaloes, elands, oryxes and hartebeests. Finally, the elephants move out. The Defassa waterbucks, impalas, giraffes, lesser kudus, Kirk’s dik and warthogs, meanwhile, remain resident. The return of the park’s migratory species begins in June and July; firstly with the oryxes and elands, then the elephants; and finally, the zebras and wildebeest. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the camp.

Day 4: To Lake Manyara National Park After breakfast drive to Lake Manyara National Park arriving at Kirurumu Tented Lodge in time for lunch. Kirurumu Tented Lodge is set high on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, enjoying a marvellous, panoramic view eastward over Lake Manyara, the Rift floor and Mt. Losimingori. Lying in a shallow depression at the base of the western wall of the eastern arm of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara typically

shimmers in a lilac and gold heat haze, sometimes streaked pink with thousands of flamingos. Backed by a narrow band of forest, it rises to the dramatically sheer red and brown cliffs of the Mto wa Mbu Escarpment.

Behind Kirurumu, the Ngorongoro Highlands rise in green and fertile splendour and form the gateway to Ngorongoro Crater and, finally, Olduvai Gorge and the Serengeti. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive in the park.

Distance/drive time: 150km / 2 hours

Day 5: To the Ngorongoro Crater After breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area and ascend the edge of the crater. On the rim of the crater is the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, where you will have the afternoon at leisure and dinner. Should you wish, you can take a nature walk in the grounds or on the crater rim. One of Africa’s best-known wildlife arenas and a World Heritage Site, the crater is one of the largest volcanic craters in the world (almost 20 kilometres wide, 610-760 metres deep and covering a total area of 264 square kilometres). An utterly unique biosphere, it harbours grasslands, swamps, forests, saltpans, a fresh water lake and a glorious variety of birdlife, all enclosed within its towering walls. Due to its high concentration of wildlife, close-range viewing opportunities and striking scenery it is also Tanzania’s most visited destination. Distance/drive time: 66kms / 1 hour

Day 6: Explore the crater After breakfast descend into the crater for a half day tour returning to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon either take a guided nature walk or enjoy views of the crater from your private stone-built verandah. Dinner at the lodge. Day 7: To the Serengeti

After breakfast, drive to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world’s most important Palaeolithic sites. Arrive in the Serengeti National Park in time for lunch at the Mbuzi Mawe Camp, then enjoy an afternoon’s game drive. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Serengeti Park

Covering 14,763 sq km of endlessly rolling savannah plains, the Serengeti is Tanzania’s first-established, largest and most famous park wherein tens of thousands of hoofed animals roam in a constant and unremitting search for the fresh grasslands upon which their survival depends. Distance/drive time: 200km / 2 ½ hours Day 8: On safari in the Serengeti A full day on safari in the vast and sensational Serengeti. Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the camp. Wings Over Tanzania Safari Schedule Day 1: Arrive in Arusha Upon arrival at Arusha’s Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be met by our representative and driven to the nearby Arusha Coffee Lodge, which lies within the rolling green acres of one of Tanzania’s largest coffee plantations and offers just 18 beautifully presented split-level ’plantation houses’ within its landscaped grounds, which include a luxury swimming pool. Dinner will be served in the panoramic dining room. Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park After a leisurely breakfast, take a tour of the nearby Burka Coffee Estate, followed by lunch. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight into Tarangire National Park. Here you will be met by your driver-guide, who will take you on your first game drive through this undiscovered wilderness returning in late afternoon to the luxury tented camp known as Tarangire Treetops, which stands within its own private conservation area bordering Tarangire National Park. Set on the Masai Steppe, amid rolling baobab studded hills, the camp offers views to Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley and is surrounded by large stands of ancient baobab trees, which offer sanctuary to large family herds of elephants, prolific bird life and dry season concentrations of wildlife. Day 3: On Safari in Tarangire After breakfast enjoy a full day of activities in Tarangire to include morning and afternoon game drives, a Masai-guided nature walk, a visit to an authentic Masai village and sundowner cocktail on ‘Sunset Hill’. After dinner, enjoy the unique experience of a night game drive.

Day 4: Tarangire to Ngorongoro After breakfast take a morning game drive through Tarangire with a picnic lunch en route. Take a flight to Lake Manyara airstrip and a scenic drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with a visit to an authentic African market in the little township of Karatu. Check-in to The Manor at Ngorongoro in late afternoon.

Reminiscent of an elegant, up-country manor house presented in the Cape Dutch style of architecture, the Manor at Ngorongoro stands on its own 1,500-acre estate, which is known as Shangri-La, and it is immediately adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Impeccably presented, the house offers a charmingly decorated lounge, bar and library, all with working fireplaces. There is also a dining conservatory, snooker room, home theatre, sauna and steam, swimming pool and tennis courts. Dotted through the mature gardens are 20 guest cottages, each with private courtyard and deck, and with indoor and outdoor fireplaces. Day 5: On Safari in Ngorongoro After breakfast at The Manor enjoy a full-day’s guided tour of the Ngorongoro Crater inclusive of a picnic lunch served on the crater floor. Often referred to as ‘the eighth wonder of the world’ the Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s best-known wildlife arenas. A World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater is also one of the largest volcanic craters in the world (almost 20 kilometres wide, 610-760 metres deep and covering a total area of 264 square kilometres). In late afternoon return to the Manor for dinner. Day 6: Ngorongoro to the Serengeti After a leisurely breakfast and lunch at the Manor, transfer to the Manyara airstrip for your flight to the Serengeti National Park. Upon arrival, enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti, whose Maasai name ‘Siringet’ translates as ‘the endless plains’. Offering unparalleled ornithological opportunities and an unrivalled natural arena wherein the glory and harmony of nature can be appreciated as nowhere else on earth, the Serengeti is the venue for ‘the greatest wildlife show on earth’ the annual migration of over one million wildebeest and their attendant cast of herbivores and predators. In the late afternoon, check-in to the Serengeti Migration Camp, a haven of sumptuous indulgence that offers all the benefits of a safari lodge while retaining an authentic bush atmosphere and the sense of adventure that can only be derived from sleeping under canvas. Day 7: On Safari in Serengeti Enjoy a full day’s game driving around the vast and sensational Serengeti, which covers 14,763 sq km of endlessly rolling savannah plains and is Tanzania’s most famous park wherein tens of thousands of hoofed animals roam in a constant and unremitting search for the fresh grasslands upon which their survival depends. All meals at the camp. Day 8: Serengeti to Arusha After breakfast, experience the uniqueness of a guided game walk. After lunch take an afternoon game drive en-route to the airstrip for you onward flight to Arusha, where you will be provide with a day room at The Arusha Coffee Lodge prior to your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Wings Over Kenya Safari Schedule Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli Fly from Nairobi’s private internal airport (Wilson Airport) to Tortillis airstrip in Amboseli National Park where you will be met by camp representative. Check into the ultra-luxurious Tortillis Tented Camp, which enjoys soaring views of the legendary snows of Kilimanjaro and has its own waterhole, which attracts large amounts of animals, particularly elephant. After lunch enjoy your first game drive in Amboseli with the chance of spotting large herds of elephant and plentiful plains game against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. On arrival back in camp, you may like to take a swim or visit the camp’s ‘Bush Spa’. As the sun sets, enjoy exclusive sundowners overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro, followed by dinner. Day 2: On safari in Amboseli Perhaps take an early morning Maasai-guided nature walk before or after breakfast. Alternatively take a morning game-drive in the park, which is an International Biosphere Reserve featuring the dried-out lakebed of prehistoric Lake Amboseli, rolling savannah and lush green swamps. The plains offer numerous antelopes, spotted hyenas, jackals, warthogs, olive baboons, vervet monkeys and the chance of spotting a lion, leopard or cheetah. Observation Hill, a conical peak, which is easily climbed, offers stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. After lunch (which can be taken as a picnic lunch on safari should you prefer), take another game-drive or a guided nature walk – or both – all are inclusive. Alternatively, visit an authentic Maasai village with displays of dance, song and cultural pursuits. Sundowners, which can be taken on safari or in the camp’s Rondavel Bar, are followed by dinner. Day 3: Amboseli to Samburu After breakfast, fly from Amboseli to Nairobi Wilson Airport and connect with a flight to the Samburu National Reserve, where you will be met by camp representative. Take a brief game drive to arrive at Joy’s Camp, named after Joy Adamson, author of ‘Born Free’. An elegant oasis in this wildly beautiful landscape, this exclusive 10-tent luxury camp is built on the site of Joy’s own camp, where she raised the leopard ‘penny’, the heroine of her last book. The camp overlooks a large natural spring, which attracts elephant, lion, buffalo, the rare desert species of Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra. After lunch at the camp, enjoy an exclusive game drive in the Shaba Reserve. Vast, magnificent and still largely unexplored, Shaba offers an evocative cocktail of uniquely contrasting habitats, veering from stark cliffs and boulder-strewn scarps to lush swamps and muddy sandbanks. It is also famous for its large prides of lion and herds of elephant. Return to camp in time for a swim in the camp’s luxury pool or ‘sundowner’ cocktails, which can either be taken on your private veranda, in the camp’s panoramic bar, or in a scenic location in the bush. Return to the camp for dinner. Day 4: On safari in Samburu With a whole day in Shaba, your options are wide; the camp offers morning, afternoon and night game drives; guided nature walks and cultural visits. Shaba itself is physically dramatic featuring rocky battlements, dry river beds, extensive thorn shrub and the backdrop of the distant hills of the Northern Frontier District. As for wildlife, the area provides one of the few sanctuaries in Kenya for the endangered Grevy’s zebra, the rare Beisa oryx and the blue-shanked Somali ostrich, whilst large herds of elephant roam the hills. All meals are provided in camp, or you can choose to take a picnic lunch or breakfast. Sundowner cocktails are offered in a scenic ‘bush’ location, arriving back in camp in time for dinner. Night game drives can be taken after dinner should you wish. Day 5: Samburu to the Mara After breakfast transfer to the airstrip for your flight direct to the Masai Mara National Reserve where you will be met by your camp representative, who will take you to Sand River Mara Camp.

After lunch, either relax, take a guided nature walk, or take a game-drive in this world-famous reserve. Offering an abundance of herbivores, the Mara makes the ideal hunting ground for Kenya’s famous ‘big cats’ and hosts her largest population of lions. It also offers the best chance of spotting a leopard in the wild. Other predators include cheetah and spotted hyena.

Day 6: On safari in the Mara With a full day in the Mara, your options are wide. Morning and afternoon game drives are offered as are guided nature walks or ornithological tours. Lunch can be taken ‘on safari’ if you wish, as can sundowners. Dinner is served in camp. There are over 550 resident and migratory species of birds. Day 7: Masai Mara to Nairobi After breakfast in camp, transfer to the airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, where you will be met and escorted either to a city hotel or direct to the international airport (depending on your flight schedule). IMPORTANT Please note that, because this is a flying safari, you are allowed a maximum baggage allowance of 15kgs per person (inclusive of hand-luggage). Additional luggage can be left in safe-keeping at African Horizon’s Office. Please bring SOFT bags only.

CLIMBING SAFARIS Mount Kilimanjaro

Machame Route Once championed as the discerning wilderness route for climbers, Machame is gaining on Marangu in terms of popularity. It is also the second-most accessible trailhead of the non-steep routes making it attractive to clients. Its reputation as one of the most scenic routes is entirely justified, with the sweeping views across the Masai Steppe to Meru and the impressive Barranco Valley praised by all who climb it. Gains in popularity, however, are inevitably at the expense of total exclusivity but as the descent route is different from the ascent, climbers are only aware of the popularity when they reach camp; it is still infinitely quieter than the Marangu Route.

Machame Route Climbing Schedule Day 1: Arrival Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro airport you will be met by our representative. After checking that you have all your luggage and belongings he will take you to one of our vehicles and transfer you to your hotel for a briefing on the following day’s climb. Overnight at Sal Salinero Hotel in Moshi. Day 2: Machame Camp Pick up from your lodge after breakfast and transfer to Machame gate where you will register before you start your climb. From the park entrance gate (Machame), you will trek for about two to three hours through a dense forest of fig and rubber trees, begonia flowers, and other tropical vegetation. A stop for a hot lunch will be made halfway to the campsite. As you continue your ascent, you will find that the tropical forest has given way to tall grasses and giant heather. You will be walking on a ridge, to the left of which is the Semira stream, and on the right, the Weru Weru. Depending on the pace of the climbers, arrival at Machame Camp is usually between 5pm and 6pm. This initial stage of the climb is tranquil and relatively easy. There is no point in rushing to get to the camp, as there is little to do there. Guides tend to recommend a slow ascent, even at this point, for gradual acclimatization. Do not try to keep up with your porters, who will usually bound ahead. Instead, take time to admire the beauty of the rainforest. If you are interested in botany, you should carry a small reference book. Day 3: Shira Camp On this and subsequent mornings, wake-up call is at around 6am and is accompanied by hot tea or coffee and typically a fabulous view of Uhuru peak. Today's trek takes you up a steep track through a savannah of tall grasses, volcanic rock, and bearded heather. You will encounter giant groundsels as you hike through a ghostly landscape of volcanic lava, caves, and foamy streams. Lunch will be taken just below the Shira Plateau, about three to four hours from Shira Camp. The hike to the next campsite takes approximately six hours and you should arrive between 2pm and 3pm. Most climbers tend to pace themselves, walking slowly and resting about every half-hour. Many will feel lethargic and have headaches by the time they reach camp. Guides advise those with symptoms of altitude sickness to drink tea and sleep a lot. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp. Day 4: Barranco After breakfast you will start crossing the Bastains stream and commence the descent to Barranco Camp along the immense Grand Barranco canyon. Along the way, you will see numerous waterfalls, which are fed, by streams coming from the mountain, converging here to form the Umbwe River. Your camp is set at almost the same altitude as the night before. Today's trek lasts for about six hours and arrival at camp is between 4.30 and 5.30pm. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp. Day 5: Barafu The scenic climb to Barafu is mostly on a moraine with a view of Mawenzi Peak towering majestically to the right, and overhead, Kibo Peak seemingly just out of reach. The alpine desert terrain encountered at this point is mostly a mineral environment with few lichens and mosses. Lunch will be taken half way. All climbers are advised to go to bed very early this night, as the next day is the longest one. Dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp Day 6: Summit You will be awakened at midnight and after a light breakfast, start climbing at around 3am. At this stage, the climb becomes much more difficult. Here, very few will not be suffering from altitude sickness in some form or another; and climbers should carry as little as

possible on this portion of the climb. Temperatures will range from -4° to 5° Fahrenheit. Making your way up a path that is flanked by the Ratzel and Rebman glaciers, you will climb for about six hours before reaching the edge of the crater, between Stella and Hans Meyer points. Another hour of climbing brings you to the summit. Uhuru stands at 19,340 feet and is the highest point on the continent of Africa. The track around the edge of the crater is rocky and icy. Concentrate on your feet, and follow your guide very closely for this portion of the journey. The descent is now easier than the ascent. You will reach Barafu Camp after about three hours at around 11.30am. Arriving into camp at around 5pm you will have trekked a total of thirteen hours today. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Day 7: Descent After breakfast continue down to Mweka gate where you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. Met by a driver guide and drive to your hotel in Moshi. Day 8: Depart After breakfast transfer to the airport for your home bound flights. Optional Extra day at Karanga Camp: An extra day is offered at Karanga to acclimatize to the higher altitude. Karanga Camp. It will be spent hiking to Karanga Camp, which is on the same altitude as Barranco Camp. You will encounter a bit of a climb at Barranco Cliff and spend the rest of the trek climbing up and down the slopes of the mountain most of the way to camp. The climbing is not considered difficult and you should arrive in time for lunch (approximately 1pm) having trekked for about four hours. In the afternoon you have the opportunity to hike in the Karanga Valley where giant senecios and lobelia grow; however, you are well advised to rest as much as you possibly can to prepare you for the climb ahead. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Marangu Route Reputed to be the easiest of the available routes, this is without doubt the most comfortable in terms of facilities and the most convenient in terms of access. Also known as the “Coca Cola Route” because of its practicality, the Marangu Route is by far the most popular route for many climbers. This popularity has led to some operators preferring to avoid it due to its non-exclusivity in the National Park Huts; also to the overcrowding of the path. However, because of the lack of camping equipment required and therefore lower porter-age costs, it remains popular with budget travelers.

Wear T-shirt, shorts and lighter shoes. Water: available the whole time from a river along the route. Day 3: Horombo Hut After breakfast start hiking slowly to Horombo Hut (3700 m). Leave the last glade of forest and follow the gently ascending path through the open alpine moorland. Today’s hike takes 5 to 7 hours. Hot lunch en route. The altitude begins to make itself felt cautioning you to walk slowly. “Pole pole” (slowly slowly in Swahili) is the order of the day while enjoying the flora and long view. Giant Senecios stands tall along the path. Kibo and Mawenzi Peak can be seen on a clear day. Afternoon tea, dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut. Weather: warm in the morning but cooler in the afternoon when clouds gather. Wear shorts, T-shirt and hiking boots. Carry a long sleeved shirt in the day path for the cool winds. Water: fill water bottles at Mandara Hut. There is a stream half way to Horombo Hut. Day 4: Kibo Hut Today leave moorland and enter the alpine desert past giant lobelia and walk on the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi Peak. Hot lunch along the way. Afternoon tea, dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut. Weather: It is cooler as the altitude has increased. Wear trousers and long sleeved shirt. Thin jacket or jumper in the day pack. Water: fill up bottles at Horombo Hut. 2 hours from Horombo Hut is the last water sign. The porters will bring water for tea and the hike in the early morning. Day 5: Summit Start around 1 a.m., reaching Gillman’s Point (5685 m) at sunrise. The path from Kibo to Gillman’s is the most demanding 4 hours on the whole climb. Continue another 2 hours to the roof of Africa, Uhuru Peak (5895 m). Descend to Kibo Hut for hot lunch then to Horombo Hut. Meals and overnight at Horombo Hut Day 6: Descent Hike back to the Marangu gate and park's headquarters. At Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman's Point are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. Meet by a driver guide with packed lunch and drive back to your hotel in Moshi.

Day 7: Depart After breakfast transfer to the airport for your home bound flights. Optional Extra day at Horombo: An extra day is offered at Horombo to acclimatize to the higher altitude. Spend a day walk to “Zebra Rock”, rocks striped by weather. If you are feeling very fatigued, it can be spent resting or exploring the nearby region. Birdlife is abundant at Horombo. The rains come upon us almost every afternoon. So plan your day hike to be back inside the hut with a cup of tea and good book by 4 p.m. Most climbers begin to feel the altitude at this level. After the rain clears, Horombo typically has beautiful sunsets and a night sky full of stars. All meals and overnight at Horombo Hut

Rongai Route This climbing safari avoids the crowded Marangu Route on Kilimanjaro, preferring to approach the mountain from the north by the lightly-used Rongai route. Experienced guides consider this ascent route both the easier and more beautiful than the main Marangu trail. The Rongai route begins in delightful forest, with the possibility of wildlife viewing, and each day of walking progresses through a different climate zone, adding considerably to the interest of the trek.

Day 3: Kikelewa Caves After breakfast, begin the morning walk which is a steady ascent up to the ‘Second Cave’ (3,450 m.) with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch, we leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Our campsite nestles in a sheltered valley of giant Senecios near Kikelewa Caves (3.600 m.) Approx: 6-7 hours walking with dinner and overnight at Kikelewa Caves

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp After breakfast, a short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb sweeping vistas and a tangible sense of wilderness. The trail leaves vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn (4,330 m.), spectacularly situated on a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization. Approx: 3 - 5 hours walking with dinner and overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Camp.

Day 5: Kibo We cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach School campsite (4,750 m.) at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night! Approx: 4-5 hours walking with dinner and overnight at Kibo Camp

Day 6: Summit Today’s climb starts out around 1 a.m. after a light breakfast, to reach Gillman’s Point (5685 m) at sunrise. The path from Kibo to Gillman’s is the most demanding 4 hours on the whole climb. Continue another 2 hours to the roof of Africa, Uhuru Peak (5895 m). Descend to Kibo Camp for hot lunch then to Horombo Hut. Meals and overnight at Horombo Camp. Weather: The cold effects of high altitude are felt. Wear everything you brought. Water: the porters have carried extra water to Kibo. Ask them and the will fill your bottles.

Day 7: Descent You will hike back to the Marangu gate and park's headquarters. At Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman's Point are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates. It is a welcome treat to sleep in a bed, take a hot shower and celebrate. Overnight Sal Salinero Hotel in Moshi

Day 8: Depart After breakfast transfer to the airport for your home bound flights.

Important to Note:

When luggage exceeds 18kg on Kilimanjaro, an extra porter is necessary at an extra cost.

Extra safety equipment is available for hire

When using the Rongai route additional equipment is available for hire of a local or second hand quality. The standard of this equipment is usually not the same as the clients would bring themselves, but it is adequate for a short mountain trek, if checked at the time of hiring for functionality and cleanliness.

Hired equipment must be pre-booked to ensure availability and must be paid in full before the climb commences
