To our Community of Family, Friends and Supporters,

Welcome to the 2017 African American Health Expo! As a resource for “Total Health & Wellness” the AAHEXPO educates each year on the many issues that impact African American/Black communities serving as a bridge between knowledge and access barriers. We accomplish this each year by serving as a meeting place to foster awareness as well as access to important information that encourages and supports positive lifestyle decisions. Our purpose is rooted in our desire to facilitate a reduction in the health differences that divide our communities.

Reflecting on the last 17 years we remain awed by the growth of this event and the outpouring of support from our community. As we look to the future, we know that we are in a time of transformation. With new information and new knowledge it is important that we work together to improve the health of our community and community members. This year our theme, Transforming: Our Health, Our Lives, Our Community, is a direct reflection of the importance of change within our community. Our health matters, our lives matter, and our communities matter and you are an integral part of this journey to our best collective selves.

Vincent Harding, an African American Historian, scholar, and social activist once said “Transformation begins with the fierce determination of the people to transform their reality. Only when the aspirations of the people well up in a mighty surge will the times begin to change for the better.” We have been created for a time such as this. It is time to change the way we talk about health, disparities, and inequity to change the narrative from one of deficit to that of untapped resources and talent. We must gather the courage to individually and collectively have difficult conversations about systems and structures that prevent the potential of our future from coming to full fruition our collective success and health depend on it.

As you explore and engage with our many exhibitors and take advantage of our various workshops, it is our hope that you leave better than you came. Leaving with a greater appreciation for life, health, community and with tools that will allow you to achieve better health and strengthen community relationships. We are transforming, mind, body, and soul as individuals and as a community. Join us this year as we begin to transform into a healthier community!

All that we do would not be possible without the help of our many community sponsors and supporters. We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the many agencies for their participation and to our sponsors for their help and support that continues to makes this event such a success. In addition we want to thank our community members for their continued support and dedication to the improvement of our overall health and wellbeing. All of the participating agencies are included in this resource guide.

FOR HEALTH. FOR WELLNESS. FOR COMMUNITY.
