MARITIME IN AFRICA
Africas share in world trade is around 3% . The continents prospects for economic growthand development are inextricably linked with the ability to increase its participation in globaltrade through enhancing its competitiveness and transporting African goods to the market.Ships are the main conveyor of Africas traded goods, with over 90% of Africas imports and
exports conducted by sea. The maritime industry therefore represents the key strategicapparatus to increase Africas trade, as well as to drive economic development both directlyand indirectly.
Thirty-eight (38) African countries are either coastal or island states while fty-two (52) of itsover one hundred (100) port facilities handle containers and various forms of cargo. Africas356,000 kms of coastline and maritime economy potentially a source of great opportunity has, however, long been neglected: maritime industries have been undercapitalized; portsare mostly small, underdeveloped, capacity constrained and ineffectively managed; and theinter- and intra-African connectivity of waterways is constrained and complex. In the pastdecades, direct aggregate losses o f revenue from illegal activities in Africas Maritime Domain(AMD) has amounted to hundreds of billions of US dollars, not to mention the loss of lives.
THE PURPOSE OF AFRICA MARITIME INDABA
The Africa Maritime Indaba aims to bring maritime priorities to the fore, and to drive real changeacross the continent. The Indaba will host the Africa Maritime Trade Forum, a maritime trade-focused exhibition which will allow exhibitors to showcase cutting-edge maritime productsand services.
Being the rst gathering of its kind in Africa, the Africa Maritime Indaba will invite thoughtleaders from across the continent to provide an overview of the cur rent state of Africa maritimein order to provide a common understanding of the status quo, of development priorities, andof the investment opportunity landscape.
The Africa Maritime Indaba will overview, amongst others, the following topics:
AFRICAS MARITIME SECTOR AS A DRIVER OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The maritime sector is a high-impact sector that can make a substantial contribution to addressing
Africas developmental challenges, owing to its combination of primary and secondary activities
