    WHAT THINGS COST

    BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

The best time to travel to Victoria Falls is

between April and October, when the

daytime temperatures are not too harsh.

November is known as suicide month

due to the very high temperatures. It is also

the time of very low water, so not the best

time to view the Victoria Falls. December to

March is the rainy season and it is also very

    hot during this period.

The Smoke that Thunders, or Mosi-

Oa-Tunya, as the Victoria Falls is

    known to the locals.

The Falls and the surrounding area have been

declared National Parks and a World Heritage

Site, thus preserving the area from excessivecommercialisation. The Falls are spectacular

throughout the year on the Zimbabwean side, but

February onwards, after the rainy season, has the

heaviest flow and volume of spray, which can be

seen up to 2km away. Just one visit to the Victoria

Falls and you will see why the name is so apt.

At 1 708 meters wide, the Victoria Falls is also the

widest curtain of falling water in the world. It is easy

to see why the Victoria Falls is one of the 7 Natural

    Wonders of the World.

Hwange National Park is one of Africa's

finest havens for wildlife and is home to vast herds

of elephant, buffalo and zebra. There are large

concentrations of giraffe and many predators,

endangered species and prolific birdlife can be

    found within this area.

The park is situated on the main road between

Bulawayo and the world famous Victoria Falls and

is only a 3hr drive from Victoria Falls itself, making

Hwange and Victoria Falls the perfect holiday

    package combination.

At Thompsons we will look after you from the

minute you make a booking until the moment

you leave Victoria Falls. This is because we have

    dedicated Thompsons staff and Thompsons

vehicles on the ground in Victoria Falls. Our friendly

staff will meet you at the airport and present

you with a welcome pack providing you with

everything you need to know and everything

there is to see and do while you are in Victoria

Falls. You will then be transferred to your hotel

in our spacious, air-conditioned vehicles. Our staff

are on hand to assist with anything that you

may need while in Victoria Falls, they will even

reconfirm your flights. Now all there is to do is

relax you are in good hands.

    WHAT THINGS COST

    BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

The best time to travel to Zambia and the

Falls would be between April and October,

when the daytime temperatures are not

too harsh. November is known as suicide

month due to the very high temperatures.

During this time the water on the Zambian

side of the Falls almost completely dries up,but visitors can still view the Falls from the

Zimbabwean side. December to March is

the rainy season and it is also very hot during

    this period.

    The first impression was unmistakable;

    immense power, the raw energy

    unleashed when the entire Zambezi

leaps wildly into a black two kilometrewide abyss. The scale is massive, thespectacle spellbinding and perpetually changing.

The Falls hiss and roar as if possessed, they

rumble and crash like thunder. Vast clouds spew and

billow out from the seething cauldron of its dark

impenetrable depths. The moving water creates a

magnetism that sucks you closer, so that you recoil

in horror to quench a subliminal sacrificial urge.

(Jumbo Williams, Zambezi, River of Africa. 1988)

What will your first impression of the Vic toria Falls

be? We guarantee that you will be awe-struck by the whole Thompsons Victoria Falls experience.

Our friendly staff will meet you at the airport and

present you with a welcome pack providing you with

everything you need to know and every thing there

is to see and do while you are in Livingstone. You will

then be transferred to your hotel in our

air-conditioned vehicles. Our staff are on hand to

assist with anything that you may need while in

Livingstone, they will even reconfirm your flights.

    WHAT THINGS COST

    BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

November to March is the rainy season and

is also known as the Green Season. Showers

are usually only experienced in the late

afternoon and do not last long. Very high

temperatures can be experienced during the

Green Season. Rates during the Green

Season drop considerably making this an

opportune time to go. The best time to visit

Botswana would be from April to October

when the temperatures are bearable and

    the Delta is in flood.

Botswana is one of the finest tourist

    destinations on the African continent.

The Okavango, which originates in the uplands

of Angola, flows into and spreads over the sandy

spaces of the Kalahari to form an immense and

wondrous inland delta of lagoon and labyrinthine

channel, palm-fringed island and fertile floodplain.

A number of safari lodges and camps have been

established in and around this watery wilderness.

This wilderness and the nearby game-rich Moremi

Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, offer

visitors the best of several worlds, appealing to the

game-viewer and bird-watcher, the hunter and the

sporting fisherman, the explorer of hidden places

and the lover of Africa in its loveliest and least

    spoilt state.

From the calcrete floors and ancient baobabs of

the Makgadikgadi Pans to the savannah grasslands

of the Chobe National Park and the mophane

woodland of the Tuli Block, there is a wide variety

    of wildlife in Botswana.

However, it is in the Okavango Delta and the

Moremi Game Reserve that visitors will find

unforgettable beauty. In the lush, indigenous forests

and along the floodplains, more than 400 species

    of birds flourish.

On the mainland and among the islands of the

Delta, lions, elephants, hyenas, wild dog, buffalo,

hippo and crocodiles congregate with a teeming

variety of antelope and other small animals. The Chobe National Park, which is the second

largest national park in Botswana and covers 10,566

square km, has one of the greatest concentrations

of game found on the African continent. Its

uniqueness in the abundance of wildlife and the

true African nature of the region, offers a safari

    experience of a lifetime.

A major feature of Chobe National Park is its elephant

population currently estimated at around 120,000.

One of the most spectacular scenes is watching a

family of elephants cross the Chobe River at sunset.

Chobe is only an hours drive from Victoria Fallsand Livingstone and is therefore the perfect holiday

    package combination.

Botswana offers a truly African experience

untouched by the more destructive pressures

of encroaching civilisation, presenting a wonderful

wilderness for the enjoyment of all who seek to

reach just that little bit further into Africa.

Botswana - Okavango, Linyanti & Savute

    Elephants drinking, Okavango Delta

The Okavango DeltaThe Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta

on earth. Instead of flowing into the sea, the

annual flood of fresh water flows inland,

spreading over 15 000km of the Kalahari sand in

a maze of lagoons and channels. The delta is at

its most impressive in August when the

champagne-coloured water is at its deepest.

Most of the animals young are born between

November and March when the vegetation is

lush. Experience the waters and get close to the

game of the Delta by taking a makoro trip in

some of the channels. Your experienced poler

will guide you around lazy, but vigilant hippos,

and you can immerse yourself in the beauty and

    the wildness of the Okavango.

    Linyanti

On the southern banks of the Linyanti River is

the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve. Here the marsh

subsides into lagoons and steadily flowing rivers

with riverine forests of Jackal Berry and Sausage

trees leading to open grasslands, and dry inland

wooded areas. The wildlife is plentiful, especially

in the dry winter months (April October)

when great concentrations of elephant, buffalo

and zebra congregate along the river, with giraffe,

impala and roan antelope being seen in the

    forests.

    Savute

Often described as one of, if not the best ,

wildlife-viewing area in Africa today. Savute

boasts one of the highest concentrations of

wildlife left on the African continent. Animals are

present during all seasons, and at certain times of

the year their numbers can be staggering. If you

allow yourself adequate time here (a minimum

of three to four days is recommended) you will

probably see nearly all the major species.

Savute is famous for its predators, particularly its

resident lions and spotted hyena populations.

You may even be lucky enough to see the

    endangered wild dog.

Typical Day on SafariThe dawn of a new day and the bush is

coming to life. Baboons scream a warning a s

they sense a predator close by. Fish Eagles utter

their eerie cry as they skim the waters for

breakfast. Somewhere in the wilderness a lion

roars, greeting the new day. Hippos grunt their

pleasure as they splash back into their watery

sanctuaries. At camp the African drums are

thumping their wake-up call and inviting you to

be a part of the magic that is the African bush.

    Early morning wake-up

    Light breakfast of cereal

Namibia is located in southwest Africa.

It is a large and mainly arid country

sharing borders with Angola to the

north, Botswana to the east, South

Africa to the south and, in the Caprivi

Strip, a narrow panhandle of Namibian

    territory jutting from the northeast

corner of the country, with Zambia and

    Zimbabwe.

With 15 000 inhabitants, Namibias capital of

Windhoek is the biggest city in the country. The

attractive town lies at an altitude of 1650m in a

beautiful valley bordered by the Eros Mountains

in the north and the Auas mountains in the south.

Towards the west, stretches the Khomas Highland

to the Namib and the coast.

Swakopmund, also known as the summer capital

and is Namibias second-biggest town. Offering

a fascinating mix of European architecture and

culture, Swakopmund is a very popular touristdestination. Tourists can indulge in a diverse range

of activities from sand-boarding, quad-biking and

camel rides to 4x4 trips, boat rides and f ishing.

Sossusvlei is an enormous clay pan surrounded by

giant sand dunes. Situated in the heart of the Namib

Desert, it truly is one of Namibias top tourist

destinations. Some of these sand dunes reach a

world-record height of 300m. The clay pan fills with

water on the rare occasions of heavy rainfall, when

guests are treated to the spectacle of a beautiful

turquoise lake. The Sossusvlei dunes are found in

the Namib Naukluft Park; the biggest conservation

site in Africa and the fourth-bigges t in the world.

The Etosha National Park is one of the most

impressive game reserves in the southern

hemisphere. Covering an area of 22 270 km2, the

Etosha National Park boasts 114 mammal species,

340 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibian

species, and believe it or not, one species of fish!

Etosha, which means great white place, features a

gigantic mineral pan which was formed 1000 million

years ago. No African holiday is complete without a

visit to the Etosha National Park.

The Fish River Canyon features an enormous

gorge that meanders along a distance of

approximately 160km. Visitors come from all over

the world to experience this breathtaking tourist

    attraction

Damaraland has no fences, no boundaries in the

vast, stony desert landscape. Just endless vistas

across stark plains, ancient valleys and brooding,

distant mountains which bring the traveller as

close to nature as is comfortably possible. Here,

the plants and animals have evolved side by

side with their environment over millennia and

unusual geological features, a wealth of rockpaintings and engravings, and populations of

desert-adapted elephant and rhino, combine to

form the unique attraction of Damaraland.

Namibias Caprivi Strip, a narrow piece of land

approximately 400km long, is one of the countrys

    top tourist attractions.
