Welcome notes from Afifah School

"Knowledge from which no benefit is derived is like a treasure out of

which nothing is spent in the cause of God."

Hadith

Welcome

“Seeking knowledge is

obligatory upon every Muslim (male and

female).” Hadith

Principal

As-Salaam-u– alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you and provide you with information about Afifah School. Our aim is to nurture and empower pupils to become responsible Muslim citizens who contribute not only to their own development, but also to the well-being of their family, friends, neighbours and the community they live in. Until fairly recently, Muslim parents had to choose between giving their children either a purely secular education in state schools (at the expense of an Islamic teaching and upbringing) or providing them with Islamic education (at the expense of academic excellence). Thankfully, the educational landscape has now significantly improved, with the establishment of many Islamic schools that provide a high standard of education as well as succeeding in inculcating an Islamic ethos into the lives of students. Islam attaches great importance to seeking knowledge and thereafter acting upon it. The very first Quranic verse to be revealed was about education. There are also countless Ahaadeeth (narrations) relating to the importance and virtues of seeking knowledge. Furthermore, the blessed Seerah confirms that the Noble Prophet (SAW) freed numerous prisoners of war after the Battle of Badr, as they had agreed to teach the Muslims how to read and write. Due to our small class sizes, our committed and motivated teachers have the experience of giving each child a personalised education. The monitoring of each student and attention to detail in assessing their needs has lead to academic progress and produced knowledgeable students who are taught in a safe and caring Islamic environment. Upon reading through this Prospectus, I invite you to visit our school and realise the potential your child can achieve here. Waalaykum As Salaam

Why Afifah School ?

Institutions play an important role in the lives of individuals and societies. Afifah provides children with an environment in which they can learn and live Islam. The homogeneity of the culture and values of the students and teachers creates social and emotional stability which facilitates learning in other areas of education (maths, science, language, arts etc). The students develop a strong sense of belonging to the Muslim Ummah. They not only preserve their rich Islamic heritage, but also contribute towards the development and progress of the community they live in.

Monitoring progress

Parental support is essential in the success of the school. Afifah School encourages parental involvement to create an environment of learning inside and outside the school.

Please Note: Information on student progress and any other issues are available to the parents, upon request.

Students will be issued with reports three times in an academic year. Parents Day/ Evening will be held twice a year.

Afifah as an Islamic school

Helps in preserving Islamic identity for the community at large, and for the children more specifically.

It provides an environment where the students can practice their religion freely and

receive feedback to improve their understanding of Islam.

It helps our children achieve the best of both worlds in a safe and secure

environment.

It focuses on Islamic Skills and Qualities according to the Quran and Sunnah in a multi-cultural society.

Children excel in all aspects of their life when they grow up in such a safe and

nurturing environment.

During KS4, mock examinations for all GCSE subjects are held at the end of the Autumn term.

Year 9 students also participate in the Key Stage 3 tests in English, Maths and Science. Annual examinations are held for all subjects at the end of the Summer term.

Assessment of pupil progress is ongoing throughout the year. Pupils have an assessment portfolio that contains pieces of work that have been formally assessed.

6

Page 10: Afifah School Prospectus...Afifah School Prospectus 2018/19 Principal Abdul Huy Malek LLB (Hons) Path to Progress and Piety An Independent Islamic School - Pre School (Boys & Girls)

Raising Standards

Importance is placed on constantly raising the pupil’s expectations and thus raising academic standards. The subject teachers, tutors and Senior Management are involved in regularly monitoring pupil’s educational and social progress. There are weekly staff meetings where the staff will discuss how to help and encourage pupils in all aspects of school life. If there are any further concerns, parents will be contacted in order to obtain their support. Parents are asked to participate in the education process throughout their child’s school life.

Parent Partnership

We regard education as a partnership between the school and the student’s home. Both elements are required if children are to be nurtured physically, academically and spiritually. The emphasis given on Tarbiyah in school needs to be supported and promoted at home too. We expect parents to uphold and maintain such values at home. Through this partnership we will be able to provide our children with the support and care that they require.

Pupils with English as an Additional Language

In accordance with the school’s aim (to provide excellence in education) we offer structured learning programmes and individual support for students with additional language needs. Please contact the school for further information. However, please note that we cannot accommodate parents who wish to use Afifah as a language school.

Careers Guidance

All teachers have responsibility for curricular and pastoral guidance. It is vital that they have an understanding of how these students learn.

Working with students to ensure that they learn how to make decisions and how to take control of their own learning is the basic function of guidance, which is an integral part of every teacher's role.

The Work Experience Coordinator sets up both individual and group appointments with pupils to discuss their career objectives. This provides the students with an understanding of the career options available to them.

Pastoral Care

As an Islamic school, Afifah provides a very supportive pastoral system by encouraging sisterhood amongst students and a friendly environment to study. Central to the supportive ethos of the school is the system of belonging to four Houses based on the names of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) wives, who the stu-dents are encouraged to emulate as role models. Through the house system, girls gain confidence, a sense of teamwork and a spirit of fun and lively competition.

Each student has a form house tutor who she meets every day and who has primary re-sponsibility for the pupil’s welfare, academic progress and personal development. This is supplemented by the work of our Pastoral Coordinator, Islamic Coordinator and Child Protection Officer.

In addition, the Head Teacher is available to discuss problems and talk to parents if nec-essary. There are parent/teacher meetings twice a year for every year group.

Afifah recognises and affirms the uniqueness of every student and works closely with par-

How can you help us?

Contacting you in an emergency: Please ensure that the contact telephone number we have for you is current. Let us know immediately of any changes in writing.

Collecting your child from school: During the day your child may only be collected by you, or by a person named by you. This is to ensure your child’s safety. Any child not collected at the end of the school day will be supervised by the Head teacher or appointed staff member.

Medicines in school: When a child requires regular medication (e.g. asthma inhalers) or needs to complete a course of prescribed medicines we are prepared to supervise their admin-istration. In such cases parents must complete consent document held at the school office and hand the medicine directly to a member of staff. Medicine will then be kept in the medical cup-board, refrigerator or in some cases in the classroom. Please do not put any kind of medication in your child's book bag.

Security: We have set procedures in place to ensure the safety of children in the event of a fire or other threat to their security. There is controlled and authorised access in to, and out of, our building; this is managed by the school administrative staff. All visitors are asked to sign in..

Using images: Occasionally we may take photographs of the children and use these images in printed publications, on our website or on display boards in school. We will send you a consent form to sign to allow your child to be included. Parents who wish to take photos or video recordings when invited to assemblies are permitted to keep them for their own private albums. Please do not upload images of children onto any internet sites.

Encouraging good behaviour: We have high expectations of our pupils’ behaviour and encourage self-discipline. We manage behaviour in a kind but firm way, through discussion and with care. Any difficulties may be resolved through discussion with the form tutor, and parents will be involved at an early stage if a child’s behaviour is causing concern. Privileges may be withdrawn if it is considered appropriate. Bullying will not be tolerated under any cir-cumstances. If you have any suspicion that any child is being bullied, please discuss this with

Safeguarding

At Afifah School, the health, safety and well-being of children is of paramount concern to us. We listen to our pupils and take seriously what they tell us. Our aim is for children to enjoy their time as pupils in this school. Our policies relating to safeguarding applies to all adults including volunteers working in or on behalf of the school. To promote a safe environment for pupils, our selection and recruitment policy includes all checks on staff and regular volunteers’ suitability, including Disclosure and Barring Service checks. In accordance with our responsibilities under section 175/157 of the Education Act 2002 and “Keeping Children Safe in Education” 2016, we have a Designated Safeguarding Lead for Child Protection (Mr Abdul Huy Malek) and a deputy (Mrs Tazeen Ahamed) who are both members of the senior leadership team. All have received appropriate and up to date training for this role. It is their responsibility to ensure that all staff in contact with children receive child protection awareness training on a regular basis. We are committed to: Establishing and maintaining an ethos where children feel safe, secure, valued and

respected, and are encouraged to talk openly and are always listened to Ensuring that all children know there is an adult in school whom they can approach if

they are worried or in difficulty Including opportunities in the PSHCE and wider curriculum for children to develop

the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from harm. The staff are aware that it is their responsibility to be alert to the signs of abuse and to follow the procedures set out in the school’s Child Protection Policy and Safeguarding Policy. Occasions do arise when our concern about a child requires us to consult other agencies. Whilst we would always aim to work in partnership with parents there may be exceptions to this when concerns are raised for the protection of a child. The role of the school in situations where there are child protection concerns is not to investigate but to recognise and refer. On very rare occasions Social Care, whilst undertaking an investigation under s47 of the Children Act 1989, may want to speak to a child without a parents’ knowledge. This would be a decision made in collaboration with partner agencies and would only be done in situations where a child might be at immediate risk. To gain consent at this point may increase the level of risk to the child or cause evidence of a crime to be lost.

Special Education Needs (SEN)

Allah (swt) has given different abilities to all students. Alhamdullilah, despite our limited resources, Afifah has taken a bold decision to put the ‘Every Child Matters’ slogan into practice by providing additional support to different ability students.

Students are closely monitored and if a pupil is identified with a particular learning difficulty, the SEN Coordinator will take appropriate steps to provide ‘In Class Support’ (ICS) to the particular student, using strategies including differentiated learning within the classroom. All the students who are included in ‘Afifah’s Extra Support Register’ have an ‘Individual Educational Plan’ (IEP) which includes suggestions for teaching and learning. Students in this group are taught using a differentiated curriculum and they receive extra support from the subject teachers and teaching assistants. As soon as appropriate, students are moved out of the ‘ICS’ group as they become confident in managing their own learning.

Any student with a Statement of Special Educational Needs or on (EHC Plan) receives the resources and provision specified in their statement. However, from September 2014, Afifah has had to limit SEN admissions due to the changes in the funding scheme.

Afifah Pre School

Afifah Pre-School was registered with Ofsted and opened its doors in October 2013 after taking over from Hanifah Nursery. In July 2014 Afifah Pre-School underwent a post registration inspection and with the hard work and dedication of staff the Pre-School achieved a ‘Good’ rating. Since our opening we have Alhamdulillah gone from strength to strength with the Pre-School filling all available places. We have established positive links with Trafford MBC who provide the NEG funding and valuable support to our Pre-School staff.

The Curriculum:

The curriculum at Afifah Pre-School covers all the areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). This is comprised of 4 themes. These themes are:- A Unique Child: every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient,

capable, confident and self-assured. Positive Relationships: children learn to be strong and independent from a base of

loving and secure relationships with parent and/or key person. Enabling Environments: children learn and develop well in enabling environments,

in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and carers.

Learning and Development: children develop and learn in different ways and differ-ent ways. The framework covers the education and care of all children in early year’s provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities. Practi-tioners teach children by ensuring challenging, playful opportunities across the prime and specific areas of learning and development.

These four guided themes work together to underpin effective practice in the delivery of the EYFS. They put the legal requirements into context, and describe how we at Afifah Pre-School support the development, learning and care of your child. The EYFS was reviewed in 2012 and 7 areas of learning were introduced. The 7 areas of

learning have been split up into prime and specific areas. Children mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These

IT Suite

The IT suite has been upgraded and there are interactive white boards in other classrooms. Nearly all rooms now have a projector. New computers have been purchased and we have updated the software to Windows 8. Wi-Fi is also available throughout the school, which comes in handy for the teachers.

Science Lab

The Science Laboratory is equipped to carry out safe experiments for the further knowledge of the students. It is also well decorated, making it a lovely classroom and a place to enjoy lessons. We have also purchased

many new apparatus for the experiments to be carried out in a professional manner.

Art Room

The Art room is also a classroom full of life and where the students can enjoy working on their art works. The room is fully equipped to satisfy the students artistic needs, such as: acrylic paint, poster paper etc. A new rack of shelves have been attached to one of the walls of the classroom to accommodate students art works they do not wish to take home. Frames have been fixed to one wall that hold the art work of students, for all to appreciate the hard work and talent the students

of Afifah possess. Also, there have been many visits from different artists over the past few years to discuss various artistic techniques and motivations with the students, and this has proved extremely beneficial.

Subjects We consider our children to be the focal point when planning the school curriculum. We follow the revised Primary National Strategy for teaching in both literacy and numeracy lessons. The school curriculum is organised so that children are stimulated, encouraged and challenged to develop their individual potential and personality to the full.

Reception In line with the Early Years and Foundation Stage Framework, we focus on: personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, maths, literacy, physical development, expressive arts and understanding the world. These goals are achieved through different topics such as transport, rainbows, ourselves, the sea, autumn and many more.

Key Stage 1

English Over the course of KS1, children develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Children learn to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively. Children learn to speak confidently and listen to what others have to say. They begin to read and write independently and with enthusiasm. They use language to explore their own experiences and imaginary worlds.

Mathematics At KS1, we want children to develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through practical activity, exploration and discussion. They will learn to count, read, write and order numbers to 100 and beyond. The children will develop a range of mental skills and use these confidently in different settings. They will learn about shape and space through practical activities that build on their understanding of their immediate environment. They will begin to grasp mathematical language, using it to talk about their methods and explain their reasoning when solving problems. 17

English/

Literacy: Over the course of KS2, we concentrate on developing the students’ learning and understanding in four areas: speaking, listening, reading & writing. Children will be encouraged to read out of enjoyment in order to familiarise themselves with the English language and to pick up vocabulary which will be useful in speaking and writing. In addition, children will develop their listening skills and use their own ideas by having opportunities to deliver presentations in front of their colleagues and also listen to others in a group situation. This method of teaching will in turn increase their overall confidence in writing their own thoughts and ideas with the correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Mathematics/Numeracy: Children are taught to develop their mathematical understanding and advance in knowing how to use and apply mathematics. They decide how to tackle problems. They record what they do using mathematical language, symbols and diagrams, and explain their reasoning. Over the course of KS2, the students are taught to develop their knowledge in: Numbers: this includes their knowledge in the numbering system and being

able to solve questions mentally.

Shape, space and measures: this includes two- dimensional and three-

Spiritual Development

Every day begins with supplications (duas/prayers) that are read collectively along with a thought of the day or a discussion of current affairs or an Islamic topic. Pupils perform daily prayers during the school day (usually Zohar and Asar). Islamic festivals and other days of religious significance are acknowledged in the school. The month of Ramadan is celebrated in a very special way. We have Quran recitation, dhikr (meditation and remembrance) and spiritual talks. Assemblies on Wednesdays and Friday play an important role in the spiritual and moral development of the girls. A special Tarbiyah Lesson (every Friday) is assigned for the High School to participate in Islamic lectures or some activities/ workshops. We also teach Quran and Hadith and try to link every lesson to Islam.

Educational Development

We teach a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum to promote the intellectual, moral, social and physical development of all our pupils and to help them develop lively enquiring minds that they can use with confidence and good communication skills. We encourage pupils to strive for the highest possible standards in all aspects of learning. As an Islamic school, we will maintain high standards of behaviour, appearance, motivation, attendance and punctuality. All these aspects of development have a lasting influence in life outside the school. Afifah’s environment fosters an enjoyment of learning and gives equal opportunities to students by providing stimulating and differentiated work, setting tasks and goals that are achievable by all. We aim to acknowledge and encourage all abilities by assessing and rewarding their effort and progress. We have high expectations of our students, not only in academic excellence but also in their standard of behaviour, appearance and character both inside and outside the school. As well as learning in a classroom, students benefit from a program of educational trips, designed both to broaden their learning and to relate their study directly to its application

Development

“The pupils at Afifah benefit from high-quality teaching. The positive relationships that exist between staff and pupils make a significant contribution to the quality of learning

across the school. The small class sizes mean that teachers know their pupils very well and are able to plan learning to meet their individual needs.”

All school fees are payable in full or by instalments over the period of 12 months between September and August by direct debit or cash. If you suffer a downturn in your financial circumstances while your child is at school, please contact the Principal at the earliest opportunity.
