April’s

Celebrating 25 years of glamorous Asian hospitality and one

of the leading luxury hotels in Singapore

Page 5: Aficionado by THS - April 2012 Issue 1

Strategically located along the Marina Bay waterfront, the luxury Marina Mandarin

Singapore is one of the first few hotels built on the reclaimed land together with

Mandarin Oriental and Pan Pacific Singapore under the Marina Square

development back in the 1980’s.

The striking hotel was designed by world-renowned architect, John Portman, who

also calls several hotels in the other parts of the world his very own masterpiece

including the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel, Regent Singapore and the newest

Waldorf=Astoria Shanghai on the Bund.

Marina Mandarin Singapore was once a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels

of the World and has been flying the glamorous flag of Singapore-based Meritus

Hotels & Resorts, which prides itself as one of the world’s leading Asian hotel

brands that provides the signature Asian grace, warmth and care hospitality.

Marina Mandarin Singapore has been home to many celebrities who stayed during

their concerts and events; and was closed down in 2005 for a refurbishment

programme that saw new designs in the rooms, dining venues, meeting spaces

and the grand atrium lobby. The hotel also installed one of Singapore’s first

outdoor mineral water swimming pool which is said to benefit one’s health.

The 21-storey high atrium of the hotel is itself an attraction, not including the

already famous Mandarin Girls or rather, Meritus Ambassadors, who don on the

red cheongsam that has been a symbol for the Meritus group since its launch at

the Orchard Road flagship hotel. Marina Mandarin Singapore is also the only hotel

in Singapore to be offering the world’s most expensive coffee called ‘Kopi Luwak’

(Civet Coffee), also known to be made of coffee beans that are ingested then

passed out by the Civet Cat in its dung costing S$58++ each and is served at the

hotel’s Atrium Lounge.

The Hotel Society will be posting two interesting facts about Marina Mandarin’s

Silver Jubilee on our Facebook page weekly so keep a lookout but meanwhile,

check out their website for special promotions that calls for celebration. Visit

meritushotels.com.

The 17 year-old Singapore Marriott Hotel

is an iconic building along the world

famous Orchard Road shopping belt with

its green-tiled pagoda roof building.

Since late 2011, the owner and Marriott

management have decided to revamp the

hotel completely by starting works around

its public areas, including the ever-popular

Marriott Café, Lobby Lounge and

Crossroads Café.

Expected to complete on 30 April 2012,

the hotel is almost done transforming their

tired-looking guest rooms and suites into

fabulous places to sleep and indulge with

their comfortable Marriott Revive beds.

The rooms now offer greater space, the addition of state-of-the-art technology and

an all new room category to cater to business travel needs. In fact, we noticed that

the hotel has ditched, probably, most of their old furnishings in the rooms and have

replaced them with new ones.

What we have discovered most recently at Singapore Marriott is the aroma that

lingers around and throughout the hotel – not the fried chicken wings nor the

grilled wagyu beef steak from the Marriott Café. It was pretty unwelcoming last

time when the smell of the food flowed from the kitchen into the lobby area but

now, it looks like they have learned something about having a scent of their own.

The scent is very refreshing and light, fitting the ambience of the new surroundings

and of course, we hope they will be available for sale soon.

While the works at the hotel seem almost done, the signature water fountains

cascading from the sides as you walk on that “runway” into the hotel may go

missing soon. The hotel has apparently covered up the entire entrance which was

dim and very old school but grand, for a change to something new and exciting.

We are definitely looking forward to see the completed new Singapore Marriott.

The world’s first Shangri-La hotel celebrated its 40th birthday last year with a bang; sharing loads of special promotions to thank supporters

since its debut in 1971. Now they are bringing their standards even higher, that includes their very high-profile Valley Wing which has been the

venue for majority important guests staying in Singapore.

Come next half of the year as the hotel unveils its latest Garden Wing rooms and suites, the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore will bring you their

latest addition – CHI, The Spa which showcases authentic natural healing methods found in traditional well-being practices shared by many

Asian cultures to the Lion City.
