LP Technologies (LPT) is an American company basedin Wichita, Kansas, close to the geographical center ofthe United States. We are the industry leader inaffordable spectrum analyzers and effective carriermonitoring - interference detection systems. Since thebeginning, LP Technologies has been a pioneer of multi-port remote-controlled spectrum analyzers, and we areproud to set the pace of innovation for satellitecommunication. We combine the latest signalprocessing technology, our customers’ input, commonsense, and our two decade industry experience to makerevolutionary products. We are innovators; weunderstand the market, our customers, and theirrespective applications, and we make complicatedthings easy.

For over 20 years radio, television, wireless, manufactures, and satellite companies have relied onLP Technologies’ spectrum analyzers to never miss atrace. All our customers agree that LPT offers the bestproducts for the right price, and that our customersupport is second to none. We create long-termpartnerships, instead of customers. So as our partners’applications become more complex so become oursolutions.

Not long ago a spectrum analyzer was the RF/Satelliteengineer’s most valued possession. Spectrumanalyzers were big, complex, expensive machines, yetthey were Majestic; an almost mythical instrument thatonly a small number of companies could procure andan even smaller number of engineers had access to. In1997 LP Technologies introduced the LPT-1750; thefirst COMPACT, LOW COST, REMOTE-CAPABLEspectrum analyzer that was available to all. Since theLPT-1250 we have introduced several ground breakingspectrum analyzers: LPT-2250, LPT-3000, LPT-6000,LPT-3000R Remote with 4 ports, and most recentlythe LPT-3000R Remote with 16 ports. The rack-mounted 2 RU 9 KHz – 3 GHz LPT-3000R-16 is an All-in-one spectrum analyzer:

In the past we de-mystified spectrum analyzers andnow we are re-inventing spectrum monitoring.

In 2015 LP Technologies’ Automatic SpectrumMonitoring System (ASM) helped resolve a cross-polarization interference mitigation issue that had beengoing on for a number of years between two satelliteindustry leaders. As a direct result of ASM’s interferencedetection capabilities and massive database, ourcustomer was able to provide solid data to prove theissue was the responsibility of the service provider.Subsequently, the offending customer was notified, theissue addressed, and our customer was relocated to adifferent transponder. What is ironic about the situationis that for many years both the companies were usingone of the most popular SMS on the market but couldn’tresolve the interference issue; once LPT-ASM wasbrought in the issue was resolved within weeks.

LPT-ASM is a Cost-effective, Scalable, User-Friendly,OS agnostic interference detection and signalmonitoring tool that is quickly becoming the spectrummonitoring system of choice for the satellite industry. When paired with the LPT-3000R-16 remote analyzerthe LPT-ASM becomes the ultimate spectrummonitoring solution capable of monitoring over 600carriers on one screen!

SummaryThe LPT Automatic Spectrum Monitoring system (LPT-ASM) was recently deployed to monitor and recordsatellite communications for a US Governmentcustomer. Remote spectrum analyzers were deployedat several US military bases and commercial teleports, overseas and in the United States. These communicateto a server at the customer’s Network OperationsCenter (NOC). The LPT ASM displays real time plotsof satellite spectral plots— power versus frequency, andrecords these plots on a 30 second interval. Alarmmasks were created that produce an aural, visual, andemail alarm when power limits are exceeded or droppedbelow allowed levels. The system greatly enhanced thecustomer’s situational awareness and its deploymentis part of a long term plan to consolidate NOCoperations in a central point.

Highlights of the system include:

• Recording: The LPT ASM records a spectral plot(power versus frequency) in a MYSQL databaseand these images can be retrieved and displayedeasily using a calendar based lookup. This is quiteuseful for forensics and providing SLAcompliance, and for cases where RF interferencehas occurred

• Alarms: Audible, visual, email, and SNMP trapalarms are generated on an alarm condition.

• Display: The system allows each client to createits own displays. For example the NOC has a10x10 matrix of all carriers monitored and systemmanagers can have their own tailored displays ofjust the satellites in which they are interested.

• Small footprint: Each remote spectrum analyzerhas an embedded 4 or 16 port switch and is 2 RUhigh, with an integral Ethernet port. The serverand clients run on any Windows operatingsystem. Deployment is fast end easy.

• Simplicity of Use: Creating traces is as simpleas specifying the center frequency andbandwidth. Creating alarms involves drawing a“square” of high/low alarm set point and low/highfrequency. One can set up a complete monitoringregime including recording and alarms for a largenetwork in short time.

• Cross -pole display: traces of co-pole and cross-pole can be overlaid with each other. In addition tousing this display to assist with satellite access, the display can be recorded and displayedcontinuously on the NOC’s situational awarenessscreen.

Enhancements to workflow and cost reductionThe customer’s principal reason for deploying thissystem was to enhance situational awareness andthereby consolidate operations at a single site. Thisallows significant cost reduction. Previously, spectrumanalyzers had to be viewed and controlled locally atteleports in the US and overseas. With the LPT ASM,all elements of the organization have complete andubiquitous access to real-time and archived RF data.

ConclusionThe LPT ASM is easy to deploy, easy to operate, andcan be used as a tool to reduce costs by consolidatingoperations. It can be used to provide a record of satellitetransmissions for forensics and SLA compliance, andto provide difference levels of situational awareness tooperators, managers, and customers. It is a costeffective tool to any user or operator of satellitetransmission systems.

“My company is building a global satellite networkand I was tasked with building a system to monitorour satellite carriers. After evaluating several systemswe chose the LP Technologies LPT-3000R RemoteSpectrum Analyzer because it is reasonably priced, easy to configure, and exceeded our specificationrequirements. We also selected the LPT-ASMmonitoring software because of its ease of use andconfigurability. LP Technologies has been veryproactive in addressing our issues and implementingnew features and the customer service is top notch.”Scott, Satellite Systems Engineer, USA

“.. now and I can really start doing some goodanalysis. Before this, it was just seeing if the signalwas still up, now I can actually analyze quality andtroubleshoot interesting problems. For example: wewere trying to see how well our tracking antennadoes in Bermuda. We know signal fluctuates but wantto know why. I can also go back and see why thatone section dropped to 0dB, it looks like Bermudahad very heavy rain that day. But since I can pull thedata out in excel format we can have some fun withit. When you look at the data by hour of day you cansee the fluctuation is most likely daily temperaturecycles. Once I get spacecraft positioning data I canalso compare the signal to that, then we can reallysay how much variation is from temperature and howmuch is from good/bad tracking. The way I’m using itas an engineering monitoring and troubleshootingtool makes a lot of this analysis much faster andeasier. It’s also incredible being able to set it up infive minutes with one person.”Steve, Systems Engineer, USA

“Our use of the LPT3000 is primary to confirm statusof carriers during adhoc traffic uplinks. These can beof short or long duration but the sample and loggingfacility of the system allows us to maintain a recordof signal condition and set alarm generation points toenable “hands-free” monitoring. In a busy TOC thisfacility is very valuable as it does not require anoperator to be dedicated to observing carrier levelsand the data logging allows levels to be checked atmuch later dates if needed. Being able to display fourcarriers on the same screen is another useful featureand precludes the need to switch back and forthbetween screens for real time observations. There isa full range of controls and settings comparable tomost other high end analyzers and the quality of theresultant trace display is more than adequate for ourneeds.”Brad, Engineering Manager, USA

“We began to use the LPT-ASM around October of2015. The server and client are very easy to use andthe menus are fantastic. We currently have several L-bands that we are monitoring on a daily bases. Having the remote analyzer gives us the ability tomonitor any changes to the carrier and provides uswith critical data when a signal breaks the thresholdsthat we set, without having to sit in front of aspectrum analyzer. We also like the ability to seewhen a carrier comes up and the alarms trigger, thismeans we are able to work on other projects whileknowing that we have good access on the satellite. This a great product I highly recommend, we will bepurchasing more of them in the near future.”Bill, Engineering Manager, USA

“Our company selected the LPT-ASM spectralmonitoring solution after researching several spectralmonitor products. LPT-ASM was chosen based on itsease of configuration and use, flexible modulardesign, clean application layout, and superiorcustomer support. In combination with the 16-inputLPT-3000R hardware, the system speeds throughseveral carriers spanning multiple satellite feeds.”James, SATCOM Engineer, USA

• Constellations of satellites are revolutionizing howwe communicate and collect data. Whether theapplication is Gathering Scientific Data, RemoteSensing, Telecommunication or EarthObservation, a low-orbit constellation allowsfaster download and upload speeds, and easierimaging, and better communication thantraditional geosynchronous satellites. Theemergence and continued growth of commercialplayers in this industry, makes LEO one of thefastest growing sectors in the satellite industry. From providing affordable internet access to themost remote places, to allowing highly securePoint-to-Point/Point-to-multi-Point satellitenetworking, among many other applications, LEOsatellites are already changing the world inseveral ways. However, since LEO satellitesrotate so much faster than traditional GEOsatellites, the current spectrum monitoringindustry has failed to accommodateLow Earth Orbit applications.

LP Technologies is pleased to announce that we are inthe final stage of testing our revolutionary spectrummonitoring platform dedicated to address the needs ofthe Low Earth Orbit satellite industry. We called it LPT-LEO, and it is coming soon!
