Dear friends,

Futsal has made strong inroads into Asia and the top-notch competition witnessed during the AFC Futsal Championship UAE 2012 provided ample proof of the ambitions of AFC’s Member Associations to lift this prestigious title.

The hard-fought games showed one and all that Asian teams have evolved over the years and as the results proved, none of the teams are invincible now.

The emergence of Australia and Kuwait, and Thailand’s shock upset of 10-time winners Iran gave a reason to the other Member Associations to work hard in order to achieve what had earlier looked improbable in the shorter version of the game.

I would like to congratulate Japan for regaining the title for the second time after 2006 and my appreciation also goes to Thailand, Iran, Australia and Kuwait for qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup to be held in Thailand in November.

I hope these five teams will prepare well and fly the Asian flag high in the world event.

In our bid to develop and improve the game from the technical perspective, AFC is now regularly undertaken technical analysIs of all major tournaments through a panel of technical experts.

This technical report will be useful in further development of the players, coaches, instructors and educators based on solid and accurate data collected during the tournament.

I would like to thank everyone involved in this competition, including the UAE Football Association, the Local Organising Committee, players, coaches, referees, fans and sponsors for their role in making this edition an unforgettable one.

Sincerely,

AFC Acting President’s Message

GENERAL: HOST CITY INFORMATION- DUBAI

8

Country: UAEPopulation: 8,264,070 (as of 2010) Capital: Abu Dhabi

Dubai is an emirate within the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A city within the emirate is also named Dubai.

Dubai is situated on the Persian Gulf coast of the UAE and is roughly at sea level (16 m/52 ft above). The emirate of Dubai shares borders with Abu Dhabi in the south, Sharjah in the northeast, and the Sultanate of Oman in the southeast. Hatta, a minor exclave of the emirate, is surrounded on three sides by Oman and by the emirates of Ajman (in the west) and Ras Al Khaimah (in the north). The Persian Gulf borders the western coast of the emirate.

The second most expensive city in the region, Dubai is positioned at 25°16’’11’’N 55°18’’34’’E / 25.2697°N 55.3095°E / 25.2697; 55.3095 and covers an area of 1,588 sq mi (4,110 km2), which represents a significant expansion beyond its initial 1,500 sq mi (3,900 km2) designation due to land reclamation from the sea.

Dubai has a very hot arid climate. Summers in Dubai are extremely hot, windy and humid, with an average high around 42 °C (108 °F) and overnight lows around 29 °C (84 °F). Most days are sunny throughout the year. Winters are warm with an average high of 23 °C (73 °F) and overnight lows of 14 °C (57 °F). Precipitation, however, has been increasing in the last few decades with accumulated rain reaching 250 mm (9.84 in) per year. Dubai summers are also known for the high humidity level.

Dubai’s government operates within the framework of a constitutional monarchy, and has been ruled by the Al Maktoum family since 1833. The current ruler, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al

Maktoum, is also the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and member of the Supreme Council of the Union (SCU). Dubai appoints eight members in two-term periods to the Federal National Council (FNC) of the UAE, the supreme federal legislative body.

According to the census conducted by the Statistics Centre of Dubai, the population of the emirate was 1,771,000 as of 2009, which included 1,370,000 males and 401,000 females. The region covers 497.1 square miles (1,287.4 km²). The population density is 408.18/km² - more than eight times that of the entire country.

Islam is the official state religion of the UAE. Dubai also has large Christian, Hindu, Sikh, Bahá’í, Buddhist and other religious communities residing in the city.

Dubai’s gross domestic product as of 2008 was US $82.11 billion. Their economy was built on the back of the oil industry.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the only two emirates to have veto power over critical matters of national importance in the country’s legislature.

The earliest mention of Dubai is in 1095, and the earliest settlement known as Dubai town dates from 1799. Dubai was formally established in 1833 by Sheikh Maktoum bin Buti al Maktoum.

Dubai’s geographical location made it an important trading hub and by the beginning of the 20th century, it was an important port.

In 1966, oil was discovered, Dubai and the emirate of Qatar set up a new monetary unit to replace the Gulf Rupee. The oil economy led to a massive influx of foreign workers, quickly expanding the city by 300% and bringing in international oil interests. The modern emirate

9

of Dubai was created after the UK left the area in 1971. At this time Dubai, together with Abu Dhabi and four other emirates, formed the United Arab Emirates. The following year Ras al Khaimah joined the federation while Qatar and Bahrain chose to remain independent nations.

In 1973, the monetary union with Qatar was dissolved and the UAE Dirham introduced throughout the UAE. A free trade zone was built around the Jebel Ali port in 1979, allowing foreign companies unrestricted import of labor and export capital.

Today, Dubai City has emerged as a global city and a business hub. Although Dubai’s economy was built on the oil industry, the emirate’s model of business drives its economy, with the effect that its main revenues are now from tourism, real estate, and financial services, similar to that of Western countries.

Dubai has recently attracted world attention through many innovative large construction projects and sports events.

Football and cricket are the most popular sports in Dubai. Five teams (Al Wasl FC, Al-Ahli Dubai, Al Nasr SC, Al Shabab Al Arabi Club and Dubai Club) represent Dubai in UAE Pro-League. Al-Wasl have the second-most number of championships in the UAE League, after Al Ain.

Dubai also hosts both the annual Dubai Tennis Championships and The Legends Rock Dubai tennis tournaments, as well as the Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament and the Dubai World Championship, all of which attract sports stars from around the world. The Dubai World Cup, a thoroughbred horse race, is held annually at the Meydan Racecourse. Dubai also hosts the traditional rugby union tournament Dubai Sevens, part of the Sevens World Series. In 2009, Dubai hosted the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

Auto racing is also a big sport in Dubai; the Dubai Autodrome is home to many auto racing events throughout the year.

Cricket is followed by Dubai’s lare community of Indians and the residents from other cricket playing nations (Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, England, Australia and South Africa). In 2005, the International Cricket Council (ICC) moved its headquarters from London to Dubai.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS: TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

14

This edition of AFC Futsal Championship was arguably played in the highest level since 2002.

The improvement can be seen by the less margin of goals scored between teams and the adoption of a more modern, up-to-the-trend playing style.

There are no more “safety first” philosophy implemented like before, even for some futsal newcomers in the region. Teams no longer sit back in their own half to defend and waiting to launch counter attack; they were more aggressive and trying to attack right from the starting whistle.

Vast improvement

Most of the players showed good techniques especially in passing, controlling and shooting. There were a lot of good movements with understanding during attack while some matured teams executed high pressured play in the opposite half.

The competition was more exciting and intense with gaps reduced between the so-called “big” and “small” teams. There were no more battles of David and Goliath.

Young blood

The emerging of young and talented players augurs well for the future of Asian Futsal. This is indeed an encouraging sign as many countries/teams such as Thailand, Kuwait, Indonesia and Chinese Taipei, are putting a lot of effort to develop and promote Futsal.

Stars to watch include tournament MVP from Japan, Rafael Henmi (No. 15, aged 20), Australia’s Gregory Giovenali (No. 4, aged 25), Thailand’s Suphawut Thueanklang (No. 9, aged 23) ,Kritsada Wongkaeo (No. 7, aged 24) and Hossein Tayebi (No. 15, aged 24).

Exciting match-up

A simple reason to a blockbusting tournament: better preparation from all teams. All 16 teams were in tip-top condition and capable to execute high pressure in the opposite half. They were able to respond quickly to the ball changing moment.

Quality goals were scored through good movement in high tempo and game speed was quicker, yet in the highest level technically, and tactically.

Foreign favour= new trends

With seven out of 16 participating teams appointed foreign coaches, it was a fresh breath of air in terms of playing trends in the tournament.

Latest tactics and strategies were adopted; as a result breathe-taking set plays and variations were seen in Dubai.

This can only motivate and encourage local coaches to do their best to improve themselves, in order to be ready to face the future encounters with the Latin America and Spanish Futsal style of play.

15

COACHES’ INFLUENCESet Plays

There were well-executed tactics and strategies in set plays. 10 goals were scored from Kick-in, 7 from Free kicks and 8 from Corners.

Unexpected variations were a joy to watch.

Time Out

Time out is no longer just meant for urgent briefing, it was adopted as a strategy from the coaches- to prepare for a set play, to bail the players out from a bombarding situation and to refresh and motivate the team.

Substitution

In most cases, all coaches used 1 to 1 and 2 to 2 substitutions. In this edition of Championship, some coaches went for 4 to 4, to execute different tactics and playing system, or save players’ energy to maintain their match freshness.

The Final

The Final between Thailand and Japan was a high tempo and physical encounter. It was obvious that coaches from both sides:

Dutch master tactician Vic Hermans and Manuel Rodrigo, of Spain, were well prepared for each other.

The more experienced Japan pushed up to the opposition half to press the Thais to restrict their movement. To counter Japan’s pressure, Thailand adopted a long passing style.

Japan were confident and played with high morale while the young Thais appeared to be nervous particularly in the early stages of the game.

Both teams were good at passing, moving and rotating and the Japanese rarely slow down the pace. Tired from the extra-time semifinal win against Iran, Thailand struggled to cope with the fast-flowing opponent.

Hermans took the risk when they were 3-1 behind. He executed the power play in the last 7 minutes but the move backfired badly as the team conceded three more goals.

The final score stood at 6-1, with Japan clinched the trophy for the second time since 2006.

TALKING POINTS

Super Suphawut!

Thailand made history by coming from two goals down to beat Iran in extra-time in the semi-final. The winning goal came from Suphawut Thueanklang who scored in the last 30 seconds following a corner.

Goal machine

Despite losing the crown, Iran are still the formidable force in the tournament- they scored a tournament high 45 goals in 6 matches, with only 9 goals conceded.

No pressure

The young Thais played without pressure in the last four match-up against Iran. Iran were overconfident after two goals up but the energetic and brave Thailand had the last laugh by fighting until the end despite missing a penalty in the process.

History maker

Thanks to Luis Fonseca Cilleros, Kuwait have qualified to the FIFA Futsal World Cup for the first time in their history. The young Kuwaiti team played with desire and passion at all times- same like the fiery Spaniard.

17

Aussie power

Australian qualified to the FIFA Futsal World Cup with a team of amateur, as most of the players were footballers. Two of them even went back to Australia in the middle of the tournament- to report for work!

Hail King Henmi

The 20 year-old Rafael Henmi was crowned the MVP- the youngest to achieve this feat in the history of the tournament. With a goal-a-game ratio, the Brazil-born youngster was instrumental in Japan success.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Sliding tackles

There should be a clear guideline to clarify the correct and proper use of sliding tackles, to avoid unnecessary foul from the players.

Rest day

The teams hardly have rest as the schedule of the tournament was just too intense. A rest day after each group match for every team is a solution. It can ensure more quality matches and performances from the teams in the future.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS: STORY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP

18

Group B: Japan 3-2 (2-1) Lebanon

A Rafael Henmi penalty with 8 seconds left to play gave Japan a dramatic 3-2 victory over Lebanon.

Kassem Kawsan looked to have capped an impressive fightback as Lebanon came from two goals down before a sixth foul from Mohammad Iskandarani gave Henmi the chance to seal the win for Japan.

Japan went into the interval with a 2-1 lead with Watura Kitihara and Shota Hoshi scoring for the 2006 winners before Karim Abou Zeid pulled one back for Lebanon.

Japan had the upper-hand for the majority of the second period but it was Lebanon looked to have earned a share of the spoils when Kawsan scored the equaliser, before Henmi’s heroic act.

Group D: Uzbekistan 1-1 (1-1) Kuwait

Kuwait reaffirmed the closing gap amongst Asian nations’ futsal after heroically holding 2010 finalists Uzbekistan 1-1 in the opener.

Kuwait took the lead in the 6th minute through an own goal from Konstantin Sviridov after a corner from Abdulrahman Almosabehi deflected inside his own net.

Three minutes later, the Uzbeks brought the match back at level through Dilshod Irsaliev.

Group B: Chinese Taipei 4-6 (3-0) Tajikistan

Alisher Ulmasov scored twice in the final 30 seconds as Tajikistan overturned a three-goal deficit to defeat Chinese Taipei 6-4 in an entertaining encounter.

The Central Asians went further behind six minutes later with Chen

Po-hao scored Chinese Taipei’s second. Han Chang made it 3-0 with three minutes of the first period remaining.

Tajikistan reduced the deficit just a minute into the second period with goal from Akhtam Nazarov but Chinese Taipei restored their three-goal cushion just seconds later with Han scored his second.

Tajikistan pulled one back in the 25th minute when skipper Sherzod Jumaev skilfully curled the ball past Chinese Taipei goalkeeper Shih Shin-an, who was beaten again seven minutes later following a powerful drive from Orzu Dodkhudoev.

Nazarov’s deflected shot levelled the match at 4-4.

Ulmasov’s brace in the closing moments turned the tide in Tajikistan’s favour.

just five minutes played. Mergen Atayev struck the equaliser for Turkmenistan 30 seconds before the half-time buzzer.

The game remained locked at 1-1 until the 35th minute when Bader Ibrahim’s angled drive giving the UAE a 2-1 lead which they extended in the final seconds through Abdulkarim Jamil after Turkmenistan’s power play failed to find the equaliser.

Group C: Australia 3-1 (1-0) Qatar

Christopher Anthony Zeballos scored a brace as Australia emerged a 2-0 winner over Qatar in Group C.

Zeballos’ acute goal-bound cross was helped out by Qatar’s Rashid Yousuf towards his own goal but the credit was given to the New South Wales Thunder star, who later blocked the vision of Qatari goalie Hamad Muftah and connected a slight touch to score his second in the 29th minute. A thunderbolt from Yousuf reduced the deficit for Qatar with only two minutes remaining but Andres Gomez put the match beyond doubt in the 39th minute.

Group A: Thailand 2-0 (0-0) Kyrgyzstan

Two second-period goals saw Thailand make a winning start to their campaign, with the 2008 runners-up seeing off the stern challenge of Kyrgyzstan.

Thailand dominated the first period but squandered a number of chances, with Kritsada Wongkaeo failing to make the most of the chances that came his way.

Kyrgyz keeper Kiril Ermolov was finally beaten with seven minutes left on the clock when Apiwat Chaemcharoen got on the end of a Suphawut Thueanklang cross before Sarawut Jaipech’s powerful angled drive following a slick counterattack sealed the win with a minute-and-a-half left to play.

Group C: Iran 14-1 (6-0) Korea Republic

Defending champions Iran thrashed Korea Republic 14-1 in their first outing of the 2012 AFC Futsal Championship.

Debutant Seo Daeyun scored a consolation goal for Korea Republic.

20

Group B: Lebanon 3-2 (2-2) Chinese Taipei

Lebanon rekindled their chances of a fourth consecutive quarter-final appearance in the AFC Futsal Championship with a 3-2 win over Chinese Taipei.

Lebanese went on the offensive right from the start and took a two-goal lead thanks to skipper Khaled Takaji and Kassem Kawsan, only for Chinese Taipei keeper Pan Wen-chieh and captain Liu Chi-cho to level the tie and send the two sides into the break on a level footing.

Takaji made it 3-2 five minutes after the restart with what transpired to be the winning goal.

Group D: Kuwait 9-3 (4-1) Indonesia

A brilliant four-goal haul from Abdulrahman Altaweel took Kuwait inches closer to the quarterfinals as they sent Indonesia back home with a thumping 9-3 win.

Altaweel notched his goals in the 10th, 13th, 24th and 33rd minute while Abdulrahman Alwadi also grabbed his hattrick scoring in the 6th, 26th and 35th minute and there were goal apiece from Hassan Fawaz and Shaker Almutairi.

Indonesia- the first team to eliminate in the competition, scored through Danny Handoyo, Bayu Bambang and Karami Balfas.

Group B: Tajikistan 1-6 (1-4) Japan

Japan booked their place in the quarter-finals with a game to spare following an emphatic 6-1 win over Tajikistan.

2006 winners Japan took the lead after just seven seconds when captain Yusuke Komiyama lashed the ball past Shukhrat Bibudov before Japan doubled their advantage three minutes later when the Tajik goalkeeper misjudged Tetsuya Murakami’s powerful low shot.

Tajikistan reduced the deficit barely a minute later when a mistake in

the Japanese defence allowed Mansur Mamedbaev to slip the ball through the legs of keeper Hisamatsu Kawahara.

Japan restored their two-goal lead in the ninth minute when Kotaro Inaba converted Nobuya Osodo’s cross before Murakami scored his second.

Four minutes into the second period it was 5-1 with Inaba getting his second of the match before Rafael Henmi swept home number six with just over three minutes left on the clock.

Group D: China 1-2 (1-1) Uzbekistan

Konstantin Sviridov and Dilshod Irsaliev scored a goal apiece as Uzbekistan defeated China 2-1 in one of the highly charged affairs of the tournament.

Uzbekistan came from behind after China took an early lead through captain Hu Jie, who was sent off shortly after the interval. Sviridov brought the match at 1-1 level in the 19th minute and Irsaliev, the scorer against Kuwait on Saturday, scored the winner in the 36th minute.

Uzbekistan survived a late scare when China were awarded penalty with less than two minutes to go but Zhao Liang’s shot was well-saved by Uzbek goalie Rustam Umarov.

Group A: Turkmenistan 1-5 (1-3) Thailand

Thailand confirmed their place in the quarter-finals as the ASEAN champions defeated Turkmenistan 5-1 in the second of their three Group A fixtures.

Thailand, runners-up at the 2008 AFC Futsal Championship, took a third minute lead when Suphawut Thueanklang’s shot from an acute angle went over the line but their advantage lasted a matter of seconds with a fine strike from Vatan Atayev levelling for the Turkmen.

Thailand regained the initiative in the sixth minute when the unmarked

Match day 2

21

Apiwat Chaemcharoen scored his second of the campaign.

Some superb trickery on the wing saw Jirawat Sornwichian set up Suphawut’s second of the match in the ninth minute which gave Thailand a 3-1 half-time lead.

With four minutes remaining, Konghla Lakka charged forward from his own half to score a fine solo effort before Kritsada Wongkaeo added a fifth in the 39th minute.

Group C: Korea Republic 0-6 (0-2) Australia

Australia beat Korea Republic 6-0 in a one-sided encounter to storm to the quarterfinals with one match to spare.

Fernando Lima De Moraes scored a brace for the Futsalroos while Peter Spathis, Gregory Giovenali, Tobias Guang Hua Seeto and Daniel Fogarty scored a goal apiece.

The Australians were clinical in counter attack as the Koreans, desperate to overcome the thrashing by Iran and needing a win to stay in the competition, came all out before Fernando Lima De Moraes’ opener.

Korea Republic have sipped up 20 goals in first two matches.

Group A: Kyrgyzstan 3-1 (0-0) UAE

Kyrgyzstan brought themselves back into contention for a place in the quarter-finals after scoring three second-half goals to defeat 2012 AFC Futsal Championship hosts the UAE 3-1.

After a scrappy first-half Kyrgyzstan broke the deadlock two minutes after the interval with Rustam Ermekov’s low drive.

The UAE went 2-0 down in the 32nd minute when Marat Duvanev’s free-kick took a wicked deflection off Abdelaziz Abdulla sending the ball past goalkeeper Jabir Mohamed.

And things got worse for the UAE three minutes later with Emil Kanetov’s close range effort.

With three minutes left on the clock Tariq Abdulla pulled one back for the UAE but it was just too little, too late.

Group C: Qatar 0-8 (0-4) Iran

Iran continued their exceptional start of the campaign with a convincing 8-0 victory over Qatar to book a place in the quarterfinals with a match to spare.

The 10-time continental champions have already wrecked up 22 goals conceding two in the tournament. Iran captain Vahid Shamsaee returned to his goalscoring best by bagging a brace in the 23rd and 31st minute.

Playing his first official international tournament, the 17-year-old Hossein Tayebi also scored two goals while there were goal apiece for Mohammad Keshavarz, Hassan Ali Asghar, Mohammed Taheri and Ahmadi Hamid.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS: STORY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Group B: Japan 6-1 (1-1) Chinese Taipei Japan concluded their group stage campaign with a 100% record following a 6-1 victory over Chinese Taipei.

Chinese Taipei drew the first blood in the sixth-minute through Lo Chih-an. Japan equalised five minutes later with Rafael Henmi fired home his third of the campaign.

Henmi got his second of the match soon after Japan kicked-off the second period. Yusuke Komiyama made it 3-1 in the 28th minute before skipper Kenichiro Kogure drove the ball home from an acute angle three minutes later.

In the 33rd minute Nobuya Osodo netted Japan’s fifth before his cutback allowed Tetsuya Murakami to complete the comprehensive win with five minutes remaining.

Group B: Tajikistan 1-2 (1-1) Lebanon

Lebanon are one match away from playing the FIFA Futsal World Cup after booking a place in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Tajikistan.

Hassan Zeitoun was just two seconds off the tournament’s fastest goalscoring record as he gave an ideal start to the Lebanon team scoring from the angle inside first eight seconds.

Tajikistan equalised in the 9th minute with Mansur Mamedbabaev finished off a good move by Orzu Dodkhudoev, who saw red late in the match. But Hayssam Atwi has different idea as he scored the winner for Lebanon on the half an hour mark.

Group D: Uzbekistan 9-1 (4-1) Indonesia

Uzbekistan eased into the quarter-finals with an emphatic 9-1 triumph over Indonesia in their final Group D fixture but it was not enough for

the Central Asians top the table following Kuwait’s 5-0 win over China.

Uzbekistan went one-up inside four minutes when Dilshod Israliev scored.

Goalkeeper Ade Lesmana was beaten for the second time when Nodir Elibaev fired home four minutes later but Indonesia reduced the deficit in the 13th minute with Gustian Wardhana’s strike.

However, the Uzbeks restored their two-goal cushion less than a minute later when Israliev’s scored his second before Hurshid Tajibaev made it 4-1 with three minutes left on the clock in the first period.

One minute after the restart Farkhod Abdumavlyanov made it 5-1 with a fine solo effort and four minutes later it was six, with Oleg Khalmukmamedov firing the ball into the roof of the net.

Tajibaev went from provider to scorer in the 31st minute with his second of the game and with three minutes left to play Abdumavlyanov netted his brace before Dilshod Rakhmatov sealed the one-sided contest.

Group D: China 0-5 (0-2) Kuwait

Kuwait romped into the quarterfinals as the Group D winner after thumping China 5-0 in the last group match.

Kuwait emerged as the group leaders by virtue of goal difference with Uzbekistan ending the group campaign with equal seven points but less superior goal difference.

Ahmad Alfarsi scored a hattrick coupled with a goal each from Shaker Almutairi and Abdulrahman Almosabehi to seal the emphatic win over China who came in the tournament as one of the favourites to at least reach in the knockout stages.

Match day 3

23

Group C: Iran 9-0 (4-0) Australia Iran outlined their status as the overwhelming tournament favourites with an emphatic 9-0 win over Australia that set up a quarter-final showdown with Uzbekistan in what will be a meeting between the 2010 tournament’s champions and runners-up.

Iran broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Mohammad Taheri drilled the ball past Angelo Konstantinou.

After veteran Vahid Shamsaee made it 2-0, Ali Hassanzadeh knocked in Iran’s third.

With four minutes left on the clock in the first period, Ghodrat Bahadori made it 4-0 with a superb individual effort.

Iran continued from where they left off with Taheri scored his second and Iran’s fifth before Hossein Tayebi became the fifth Iranian to get his name on the scoresheet in the 31st minute.

Two minutes later it was 7-0 with Hassanzadeh bagging his brace and with less than three minutes left Javad Asgharimoghaddami got in on the scoring act.

Shamsaee had the final say by scoring Iran’s ninth and final goal.

Group C: Qatar 6-3 (1-1) Korea Republic

Qatar recorded their maiden win in the AFC Futsal Championship as the debutants recorded a 6-3 win over Korea Republic in an academic match.

Amro Mohssein Abdelaal, who missed out first two matches due to suspension showed what he is worth off as he created a goal in the 7th minute for Shalem Khalifa and later wrote his name in the scoresheet in the 21st minute.

Korea hit back with a lucky deflection goal which was given as an own goal off Muneer Mohammad, but Qatar players ensured that they

go home with at least something to cheer about. Muneer, Saad Bilal, Rashid Yousuf and Ali Al Sabah also scored a goal apiece before Korea pegged back two through Kim Minkuk and power-player Kim Jeongnam.

Group A: UAE 2-4 (1-3) Thailand

The UAE’s hope of reaching the knockout phase of the AFC Futsal Championship at the first time of asking ended when the 2012 hosts went down 4-2 to Thailand.

The UAE got off to the perfect start as Abdulkarim Jamil opened the scoring with just under a minute played.

But the UAE’s advantage last just three minutes with Sarawut Jaipech confidently shot Thailand back on to level terms.

The Thais took a tenth minute lead when Jirawat Sornwichian fired home before Thailand went 3-1 with three minutes of the half remaining courtesy of Kritsada Wongkaeo’s strike.

And things got worse for the UAE when Suphawat Thueanklang hit the target from just inside the left sideline for Thailand’s fourth goal in the 32nd minute before Abdulkarim Jamil scored his second of the night in the dying seconds, which proved to a mere consolation.

Quarter-finals

QF1: Thailand 5-3 (3-2) Lebanon Thailand maintained their 100% record after coming from 2-0 down to defeat Lebanon 5-3 and set up a semi-final showdown with Iran.

With a place in the 2012 FIFA World Cup at stake Lebanon raced to a two-goal lead thanks to a Kassem Kawsan double but goals from Jetsada Chudech, Suphawut Thueanklang and Apiwat Chaemcharoen saw the Thais go into the break with a 3-2 lead.

Nattavut Madyalan gave the Thais a two-goal cushion ten minutes into the second period and after Jirawat Sornwichan extended the Thais advantage with the fifth goal in the 36th minute, Ali El Homsi netted a late consolation for Lebanon.

QF2: Iran 6-3 (3-0) Uzbekistan

Iran stormed into the semifinals of the AFC Futsal Championship 2012 after beating last edition’s finalist Uzbekistan 6-3 in the quarterfinal.

Iran’s entry to the semifinal also ensured their place in the FIFA Futsal World Cup to be played in Thailand later this year. In contrast, Uzbekistan are out of the race with Thailand beating Lebanon by 5-3

- lesser goal difference than Uzbekistan.

Hamid Ahmadi scored a brace including a fifth minute goal against the run of play to put early pressure on Uzbekistan. Ahmad Esmailpur scored Iran’s second in the 7th minute.

Uzbekistan came out strongly in the second half as it took just a minute for them to reduce the deficit by 3-1 courtesy of Shuhrat Tojiboev’s strike. Iran scored their fourth just a minute later through Mohammed Taheri.

Uzbeks came adventurous and add one more goal in the 28th minute with Tojiboev netted his second of the match.

Iran came back firing as Hossain Tayebi scored in the 32nd minute while Hamid added one more before Dilshod Rakhmatov’s consolation in the 40th minute for the Uzbek.

QF3: Japan 1-0 (1-0) Kyrgyzstan

Japan scraped into the final-four with a 1-0 victory.

The opening exchanges were an evenly-fought affair until Japan broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Rafael Henmi maintained his record of scoring in every game at the 2012 AFC Futsal Championship with a powerful long-range drive that the usually

dependable Kiril Ermolov deflected into his own net.

As it transpired it was the lapse in concentration from Ermolov, who had been singled out by Rodrigo as one of the best keeper at the tournament, the decided an extremely tense and cagey match that the Japanese dominated in terms of possession and chances.

QF4: Kuwait 2-3 a.e.t. (2-2, 1-2) Australia

Australia set a date against Japan in the semifinal following their epic 3-2 extra-time win over Kuwait. With the win, Australia grabbed a berth in the upcoming FIFA Futsal World Cup Championship alongside with Kuwait, who finished as top-fifth ranked country in the Championship.

Given the stakes from the match, the evenly-matched contest was a nail-biting affair with Kuwait coming from back on two occasions before Australia sealed the victory with Daniel Fogarty’s second of the match two minutes into the extra-time. Earlier, Fogarty gave a great opening to Australia putting them 1-0 ahead as early as in the 3rd minute of the match. Kuwait’s in-form striker Shaker Almutairi brought the match at level in the 15th minute after good works from the flank by captain Salem Aman.

The see-saw battle continued as Australia restored the parity just

one minutes after Shaker’s goal through a brilliant run from Ngaluafe Danny.

Despite trailing by a goal down, Kuwait hit back in the second half with a 28th minute strike from Hamad Alawadhi.

Semi-finals

SF1: Thailand 5-4 a.e.t. (3-3, 1-2) Iran

Suphawut Thueanklang scored in the last 30 seconds of extra-time as Thailand overcame the loss of two early goals to defeat ten-time champions Iran 5-4 and book their place in the final.

Asian futsal icon Vahid Shamsaee opened the scoring in the fourth minute before Hossein Tayebi doubled the advantage three minutes later as the threat of a one-sided semi-final loomed.

However, Thailand, runners-up on home soil in 2008 when they lost 4-0 to Iran, hit back almost immediately through Suphawut Thueanklang as the first-half ended 2-1.

Javad Ashgharimoghaddam made it 3-1 with 11 minutes remaining before a Suphawut penalty and a Jirawat Sornwichian effort soon after sent the thrilling semi-final into extra-time.

Apiwat Chaemcharoen gave the Thais a 4-3 lead in extra-time but in an dramatic end to the absorbing contest Shamsaee equalised before Suphawut sealed the win after missing a penalty seconds earlier.

SF2: Japan 3-0 (0-0) Australia

Japan reached the final of the AFC Futsal Championship for the seventh time with a hard-fought 3-0 victory over Australia in the last-four encounter.

The amateur Aussies gave a sterling account of themselves but in the end Japan’s experience told as the 2006 champions ran out winners courtesy of second-half goals from skipper Kenichiro Kogure, Wataru Kitihara and Rafael Henmi.

Japan’s victory set up a final showdown with Thailand, who overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat defending champions Iran 5-4 after extra-time to ensure there will be a name other the Iran on the AFC Futsal Championship for only the second time in the tournament’s history.

Match day 5

Third-place match

Iran 4-0 (0-0) Australia

Iran ensured direct entry to the next edition of the tournament following a hard-fought 4-0 win over Australia in the third-place playoff.

Australia defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Peter Spathis a particular source of frustration for the Iranians, until the infinitely more experienced Iranians took advantage of the flagging Futsalroos with four unanswered goals in the last eight minutes.

With four minutes 31 seconds left the flagging Futsalroos were beaten when Javad Asgharimoghaddam intercepted an attempted clearance from Gregory Giovenali to round Spathis and roll the ball into the empty net.

A minute later Spathis was beaten for a second time swift break from the Iran half culminated with Mohammad Taheri confidently sweeping the ball home after being teed up by Mohammad Keshavaraz.

Australia attempted to get back into the game with the power play but the move backfired on the Futsalroos with Asgharimoghaddam scoring into the unguarded net from deep inside his own half before Asian futsal icon Vahid Shamsaee put the gloss on the win with number in the dying seconds.

Final

Thailand 1-6 (1-2) Japan

Japan were crowned AFC Futsal Championship UAE 2012 champions with an emphatic 6-1as the East Asians took the coveted title for a second time.

Kenichiro Kogure gave the 2006 winners a fourth minute lead and after Kritsada Wongkaeo drew Thailand level in the 11th minute Wataru Kitahara restored Japan’s advantage with five minutes of the first period remaining as the East Asians went into the break 2-1 up.

An error from Thai keeper Surapong Tompa led to the indirect free-kick from which Kotaro Inaba extended Japan’s lead midway through the second period before Rafael Henmi, keeper Hisamitsu Kawahara and Nobuya Osodo added further goals as Thailand’s power play backfired badly.

The Top Goal Scorer award is given to a player who has scored the most number of goals in the Competition.

This is calculated based on the number of goals scored by an individual player in the competition. In the event that there is a tie in the number of goals scored, the number of assists will be taken into account.

Asian futsal icon Vahid Shamsaee has won the AFC Futsal Championship Top Scorer award for the eighth time in his illustrious career after goal assists saw him get the nod ahead of team-mate Ali Hassanzadeh, Thailand’s Suphawut Thueanklang and Japan’s Rafael Henmi.

All four players ended their respective campaigns with seven goals. Consequently, the number of assists was taken into account and with Shamsaee setting up six goals the Iran skipper, who first won the top scorer prize in 2001 with a record 31 goals, took the prize.

AWARDS - MVP

“He deserved to win the MVP and he is the archetypal futsal player that plays futsal with joy. Scoring a goal in every game is not easy and it’s something that only big players can do.

Asia needs to start producing players like him who start at an early age and are not football players that switch to futsal later in their careers.”

- Japan coach Miguel Rodrigo

“An emerging star of the tournament, passionate, quick, skilful on the ball, reads the game well, able to defend as an individual and works very well with the team.”

Coach Padu (Brazil)

Date of Birth 7 April 1959

Career as a coach 2012: Head coach- UAE national team

We played some very good futsal but what people must understand is that it is very difficult to win

matches in the Asian Finals.

We have just 11 players and three goalkeepers and of those players five have never played in an

international competition before.

Futsal in Lebanon is much smaller and needs a lot of development to progress but this is a long project and

will take time.

You could see that the bigger teams at this tournament have the advantage of playing futsal for many more

years than we have and we have to start getting futsal into the clubs and schools so that we can learn the

basics.

This has been a warning for us and now we must ask ourselves the necessary questions before the World

Our journey in this championship is quite encouraging given the resources and support we have had. We have part time players and were trained around 40

hours before the tournament. Even there were some players who failed to make it to the training due to their

work commitment.

With this resources, going to the World Cup and fluttering Australian flag is not a minor thing.

There are talents in our squad but we need to work on our defence as well as qualities.

I hope in next two years time we work on those particular areas and come back stronger and start

giving a real challenge to our opponents.

When you are 3-0 down against a team as big as Iran, it’s next to impossible to come back into the match.

It’s been 17 matches we have lost against Iran in 18 games but the gap is closing. There are countries in Asia who are very aggressively working on to

develop the game and I am sure in 2014 Iran will get challenges from more countries than now.

This was a very different set of players from those that took part in the qualifiers and this was a very difficult group but I think the players will have learned a lot

from the experience. With each game here I could see the team improving.

80% of the players are under the age of 23 so we were not just looking at this tournament and we were

FITNESS TEST

The fitness test for the Futsal Referees was conducted on 23rd May 2012 at The Abdulhakeem Stadium at 1930 hrs. Participants (15 main referees and 2 stand-by referees) passed the fitness test requirement. Unfortunately appointed referee Mr. Vadim Baratov (TKM) was injured during the last speed test.

The fitness test was conducted by four (4) Futsal Referee Instructors and assisted by local fitness instructor Mr. Hassan Abdulla Alhammadi. The medical team and ambulance were present to assist us.

PRACTICAL TRAINING SESSION

The practical training session during the preparatory course was conducted on 24th May 2012 1400 hrs at Al Shabab Stadium. It was a new approach to the training session as the referees were given the opportunity to use the Communication System. They are able to practice and rehearse their movements and signals using the communication sets and thus able to have better teamwork and understanding. The training session was a success as it enables the referees to perform better in actual matches.

DEBRIEFINGS

The daily debriefings were also conducted by the Referee Instructors on the next day of every match except during the Final Match Day where the debriefing took place right after the match.

During the daily debriefings, a general and yet extensive overviews of the match were given by Referee Instructors, where many match incidents edited after each match were shown, discussed and

analyzed. In these sessions, Referees also talked about their matches and their performances and the instructors will brief them on their strengths and areas where the referees can improve.

Referees were also able to learn from their mistakes and mistakes of their colleagues and their strengths were emphasized. Each session lasted for an hour’s and ended with advises to the referees for further improvement.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS: REFEREEING REPORT

92

The overall performances of the Referees were very good, due to the daily debriefings and they did improve after every match. Most of their decisions were well received and accepted by the players/teams and there were no major mistakes committed by the referees.

However, the instructors identified some areas for development such as player management, technical area management and foul recognition.

On the physical fitness readiness, they have also performed well and have no problem. The referees were able to accelerate and change the pace/direction at an appropriate time during play and at match incidents.

REFEREEING APPOINTMENT

Basically, the referees were each given an opportunity to officiate a few matches before the instructors decide on the other appointments. Referees were later appointed based on their current performance.

During the quarter finals, seven (7) referees were released and nine (9) referees stay for the semi finals, 3/4 place and final matches.

All appointments were discussed thoroughly by the instructors and forwarded to AFC Referees Department office for review before finalizing the appointment and distributed to the referees and the Competition staff.

REFEREES PERFORMANCE

93

Their support to each other was commendable. Each referee knows their responsibility well and organization of administration, arrival, training, debriefing etc. was well coordinated. On the pitch, their interpretation on the Laws of the Game was good but the follow up sanctions after each foul need further improvement.

CONCLUSION

Because of the Preparatory Course and the daily debriefings, the referees’ understanding and the decisions on matters on the Laws of the Game were good. As they were committed and have made preparations in their countries, their physical fitness level had also met with our expectations.

The exchange program with UEFA, as feedback from AFC Instructors and Referees, were very good. AFC match officials and also UEFA have received different perspectives of instructions and it also provided them with valuable exchanges of knowledge and experiences between the instructors and referees from both sides.

All the Referee Instructors were well-experienced personalities and the referees for this tournament had received the best lecturing sessions during this tournament.

Due to this, the refereeing performance was on a high level and their knowledge and the performance improve on each match they officiated.

Overall, the referees have developed and enhanced themselves into higher level through this tournament.

STRENGTH

AREAS FOR FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

There were a small numbers of referees that need more match exposures for them to be able to learn more. With more exposures and experiences, they have the potential to excel further.

However, some referees need to improve their English language to enhance their level of understanding and also to have better communication with each other.
