Supporting a data hub move at Camp Pendleton in 1996, a connection was madewith an action officer at the Marine Corps Network Operations Center (NOC).
The “Opportunity”
Through continued small tasking, I became aware that the NOC had a majorproblem with their Marine Corps Networking system, which was based onBanyan Vines technology.
SoMD to Camp Pendleton to Quantico
Finding an avenue to be contracted, I began supporting the NOC on-site inQuantico in June 1997.

“Busted” the typical Small Business glass ceiling. “Born” into enterprisenetworking as a Prime Contractor rather than providing help desk support as aSubcontractor.
The “Result” of our MCEN Opportunity
Provided immediate expansion opportunities which began with MCEN operationsand cyber defense and continued with associated networking, cyber, andapplication integration services throughout the Marine Corps (Garrison andTactical).
Provided reputation and past performance to win new work opportunities, primarily within the arena of network operations and cyber defense – SOCOMEnterprise Network, Navy Marine Corps Intranet, European Command Network, and Air Force Medical Systems Networks.
Allowed the company the stability to develop and mature its Corporate Supportfunctions, continue its “Smart Electronics” Product Group, and expand itsbusiness development efforts.

2008 Small Business Speaking Engagement
What We’ve Learned From Our Experience
• Multiple Owners Spread the Mental Fatigue • Beware the “Rollercoaster”• Jump out of the Window for a Client, Or Someone Else Will• Don’t Let a Lack of Work Discourage You from Hiring Quality Personnel• A Mediocre Company with Great Contracts is better than a Great
Company with Mediocre Contracts• Be Prepared to Cheerlead, Console, Nurture, Support, Provide a
Shoulder, Empathize and Apologize to your Employees. Oh Yeah, and Even Throw a Going Away Party When They Quit on You!
Company Slogan Evolution
• “Where Smarter Than We Look” became “We’re Not As Old As We Look!”• “The Fun Hasn’t Started Yet!” became “When is the Fun Going to Start?”
www.smartronix.com© 2018 Smartronix, Inc. 52
Some Additional Things We’ve Learned Since 2008
• Only in America• Success is Hard Work• Take Time to Celebrate• Leadership as an Upside Down Pyramid• Emotional Intelligence is as Important as Business Intelligence• Continuous Assessment, Especially in Good Times• Be a Good Client• Youth is Served• It’s All About the Data• Military Market is Extremely Rewarding• The More We Talk Together, The More We Understand• LPTA is ********!• Government Acquisition Requires Major Transformation• Government – Contractor – Employee Relationship is Like a
Three Legged Stool
