DESCRIPTION

Flyin' is a newsletter, published digitally by Aruba Flying Club. This newsletter was an idea to maintain its member up to date with what was going on in the club. This newsletter could potentially change into a digital magazine with the help of ISSUU, that can help organizations drive costs down, and at the same time, saving tons of paper.

- is the act or process of flight - can also refer to Aviation

In response to its entire members request and in an attempt to keep all members up to date with the latest news, AFC have decided to come up with a quarterly based newsletter. Named “Flyin” as it defines what we love doing.

The idea came from member Gabriel Richards, and we hope he will continue to help us with this project.

This Newsletter will be released four times a year and will be released digitally to all its members and a few print copies will be distributed for free at certain strategic places.

We hope you enjoy this Newsletter, and we hope to keep you informed of what is happening in our aviation club.

he year of 2007 was a difficult year for the club for various reasons, but we have managed to come together and with the help from various individuals we have managed to reach our goals. Sometimes it is important to understand what our objective is as an aviation club. Our

objective is to promote aviation and Aviation Education on the island of Aruba. As some of you know, aviation is a very costly business and to maintain an aircraft in airworthy condition requires incredible amounts of funding. For every Pilot that AFC has helped along the way, we celebrate, because not only is it a very expensive career but there isn’t an organization other than AFC, that could help someone to find his/her career path.

We would like to thank everyone for the help and support we have received when we needed the most. We would like to thank Claudio Stamper for helping us every time with in hosting our events and meetings. We would like to thank Tiara-Air for helping us every time with our fundraising events, and funding our FAA Exam programs and for believing in us as an Aviation Organization. We also thank them for believing in our Pilots and for giving them a chance in their company. We would like to thank Carlos Cano in advance for what he will do for us in the near future. We also would like to thank Frederick Nuboer for his advice and guidance whenever we needed it. We would like to thank Management of Aruba Airport Authority for cooperating with us many times, for their help and support.

We have many potential projects in the pipeline and even though I am stepping down as President, I will continue to help the club in every possible way. For all other people out there, who would like to become a pilot, my advise to them is to not let anyone discourage you from dreaming. The sky is the limit. Have a safe flight and I look forward seeing you on the Down Wind pattern for Runway 11.

Greg Lacle / AFC Former President 2008-2011

“I have served the club in Good and Bad times and I am saying Goodbye as the President, but I will continue serving the club in many different Areas.”

Joswain Werleman DOB: 03-09-1991 Age: 19 (top right) Rudinho Rodriguez DOB: 09-29-1990 Age: 20 (bottom left) It was an honor to sit down with two great young pilots, who are now officially Tiara-Air’s newest First Officers (Co-Pilots). I invited the VP of our Club, Harvey Koeiman, who is also F.O. for Tiara-Air and we had the pleasure of interviewing these two young pilots. These young pilots did their first touch down with the Short360 Aircraft that Tiara-Air is currently using for regional passenger transportation the day before this interview. During the interview we asked them many questions about their whole experience while they were studying and doing hour building in order to complete their commercial pilot’s license. Question1: How did you guys get into Aviation? Rudinho: Well, we both started in the flight simulator club, and while we were there we met more people, and it was then that we heard that there was a Flying Club on the island called Aruba Flying Club (AFC) and that they had an aircraft and that they offered a Private Pilot’s course every year. Joswain: That’s when we decided to approach AFC, requesting more information and then joining their Private Pilot’s Course and from there on, we knew that we wanted to become professional pilots. Question2: What was one of the greatest challenges that you guys encountered during your whole process in applying to the Flight School? Joswain: One of the greatest challenges was to try to pay for our tuition and flight hours. In order to apply for the Aruba Study Loan, you must have a High school diploma. The other challenge was that the Aruba study Loan is mostly based on University semester programs systems, while the Flight School was not based on that

2

system. So trying to get these funds to in time to

cover our tuition in time was tricky. Thanks to our parents, we managed to get the funds in time to continue our studies without any delays. Question3: What were the requirements that were needed in order to get into the Pilot Program? Joswain: These Flight Schools do not require a High School diploma in order to be accepted; the only requirement is that you need to be proficient in English and that you have the funds to pay for the tuition. If your English is not proficient, they will require you to take the TOEFLE test in order to get accepted. In our case we had visited their school and from the conversations with them, they felt that our English was proficient enough and that is why they did not request us to take the TOEFLE. One of the challenges we went through was that in order to apply for the Aruba Study Loan, you must have a High School diploma. At the time that we decided that we wanted to become commercial pilots, we were at EPI in the “Economy” sector in the second year and we were not eligible at that current time for the study loan. Rudinhho: It was then that we have researched and found an online school called PENN FOSTER University online that offered your high school diploma within a year. We managed to finish this in 6 months, because we really wanted to get the study loan as soon as possible to start our pilot’s course at FIT (Florida Institute of Technology).

Question4: What was the best experience in your whole studying trajectory in Florida? Joswain: Flying all those hours around Florida, which is called “Hour Building”. It gave you a change to see all those great areas of Florida. Rudinho: I think it was great having the same Instructor from Private until Commercial, who helped you all the way to your commercial license. During the hour building you get to visit so many airports, and you get to experience different weather conditions and the view from the top is phenomenal. Joswain: Our Instructor was Jeffrey Alferd, a 27 year old. While we were there, Bell-Air accepted him. Rudinho: When they called him at the Flight School, we were actually with him. He just got off the phone with the company and he shouted very loud “I got accepted at Bell-Air!” Last year on November 11th of 2010, during your hour building, there was a Piper Seminole from FIT (N883FT) carrying 4 persons on board, which was coming from the Bahamas. They stopped for fueling at West Palm Beach and just after taking off; they had problems with one engine. Immediately after, they crashed. All four aboard died. NTSB investigations pointed out that fuel was not going to the left engine and that the Fuel switch for the Left engine was found in the off-position. According to the Kathryn Aviation Report:

“Corrective action' not taken quickly enough to avert fatal crash at PBIA Piper PA-44-180 Seminole, N883FT, FIT Aviation LLC, Palm Beach International Airport (KPBI), Florida.” Question5: We know these were people you studied with and probably knew. Where were you guys at the time of this accident and what was going through your mind? Joswain: We were doing hour building and on that particular day, Rudinho and I were at Smyrna Beach (KEVB) and we had just landed for fuel, and I had asked Rudinho to go and get us some food, while I fueled the aircraft and in order to not lose time, I continued to do touch&go’s while he returned with food. When Rudinho returned with the food, I was waiting for him on the ramp in the aircraft, ready to continue, and he made a sign to me to stop and to step out. At the time I was thinking: “What is he doing?” So I parked the aircraft and walked towards him, and it was then that Rudinho informed me of the accident. We were both in shock and in despair. We parked our aircraft for that day and went home to watch the news of this tragic accident. We knew Jenny very well and had flown with her many times. We all recalled that Jenny had lots of flight time (2279 hours to be exact) and we recalled having seen her a few days before and we said our goodbyes, we hugged her and told her that we were going to do our hour build-up and that we would see

AFC has a great project lined up this year. This idea was in the pipeline for the longest time but due to the recession, it suffered lack of funding. We look forward to work with our Photographer member Rudinho Rodriguez to help us with this.

her in a few weeks. That was the last time we have seen her. Jenny was a very nice girl and always had a nice smile. She will never be forgotten. More about this incident can be read here: link the NTSB PDF report can be found here Question6: What would be an incident that you recall happening to you while flying in Florida? Rudinho: Well it was this one time that I flew to one airport up north in Florida and when I landed I was starving, so as you know many airports in Florida have a Pilot’s car, which is like a courtesy car for pilots. I recall landing and requesting fuel and I had asked the FBO person at the counter for the nearest walk-by Restaurant or Fast Food chain, the gentlemen replied that all

the food places were about 10 miles away. I replied that it seemed to far to walk, so he handed me the keys to the car, to which I replied that I did not have a driver’s license. The man glimpsed at me very funny and said: “Well, you have a Pilot’s License right? Well there you go, take the car and go get yourself some food.” Aruba Flying Club would like to thank you both for allowing us this interview and we wish you both all the success in your career and we feel great in having helped you find your path towards your career objective. We hope you continue to contribute in our club, as you are great examples for our youth. Your example truly proves that dreams can really come true and to never let anyone ruin discourage you from following your dreams.

ast year, AFC had its FAA Examination event, where Student Pilot that enrolled in AFC’s PPL course, went for their FAA Theoretical Examination. The Exam was held at the Past President Architectural firm’s office and AFC had the pleasure of having Examiner Ed Herrera from San Francisco to administer the exam here in Aruba.

From all the Student candidates who went for the Private Pilot’s exam, Iwan Vasilda and Greg Lacle went for their Ground Instructor’s Exam. AFC congratulates all the students for their achievement. AFC would like to thank TIARA-AIR for sponsoring the event. This year, AFC will have its examination on the second week of May of 2011 in Aruba.

In case you thought AFC was quiet in 2010, AFC had another great car rally, this time with the theme of TOP GUN (the 80’s movie). Andy & Nilton Lacle helped AFC to organize a tremendous Car Rally integrating new technology. The event ended at Jimmy’s Ocean View Bar with Music, Great Food & Beverages. AFC would like to thank all the contributors, sponsors, Tony Parejo and specially Mr. Griffith and Marcel for their help and support in helping us with this great venue that contributed to a successful event.

Just another great day at the south side of the airport, enjoying some BBQ.

As part of Aruba Flying Club’s Rituals, it is customary tradition of the club to cut the students shirt at the end of his/her first Solo flight and to write the flight date and where it was originated and signed by the Flight Instructor.

In this photo you can see Student Pilot Bas Kamermans having received a sharpie marking on his back.

Bas Kamermans finished his Private Pilot course in 2009 and now holds a US FAA Private Pilot’s License.

A few months later he moved back to The Netherlands. We wish him all the best and many happy landings.

In case you have not attended the General Members Meeting on March 25th of 2011, we would like to inform you that AFC would need your help. AFC will have our 2011 Fundraising event starting in April. If you are a member of our club, we believe it is your duty to contribute in helping our fundraising event. A board member will contact you to inform you of this event and how you will be able to help AFC out. We look forward for your help and support during this very important fundraising event.

As mentioned by the past president in the last GMM, in the past few months, Aruba’s Immigration and Customs personal working at the FBO have been given our members a hard time while

going through the FBO to access our plane. The former President himself experienced this. For this reason, in conjunction with the board, it was decided that in a new approach to try to avoid this problem, AFC has introduced a new club badge. This new badge will officially be presented to both AAA (Aruba Airport Authority, Immigration, Customs and FBO department to identify us at the facility and in an effort to avoid this problem. The new badges were charged to members in 2011 as a separate cost, but in 2012 it will be part of the regular membership fee. New AFC badges will be made for all the members and will be mandatory at all AFC events and at the FBO at all times. Members will not be able to fly with expired badges. This ID is our club’s proof that you are a legit member of our club. The badges will expire every year and members’ account will need to be up to date in order to receive a new badge. To be eligible for your new ID badge, you will need to call 583-3778 for an appointment. This new ID badge will be in effect June 1st of 2011. This applies to Flying Member, Non-Flying Members, Board Members and Honorary Members. Starting in the year 2012, badges and an aviation magazine will be included in the membership fee.

Dear AFC members, in order to include a badge and magazine subscription, the membership will need to be increased. It was voted in favor in last GMM and it has been decided to increase the membership fee. Non-Flying Membership fee will be AWG. 240.- per year. Flying membership will be AWG. 360.- per year. The great news is that each member will receive a new badge every year and will receive a yearly subscription to a Pilot’s magazine. The new change will be in full effect on January 1st of 2012.

Reflecting

As Aviators, we share same passion for flying. To all the members who contributed their time to the club in the past, you know who you are… we salute you. To those no longer with us, we know you are in a better place and we know you look down on us from time to time. We find comfort in our hearts to know we have had the honor of having shared those great moments and flying adventures with you in our club. To you my fellow pilots, we salute you.

P4-AUA, better known as P4-BON is leaving its home Aruba for good. For those who had the honor of flying or learning on this aircraft, we are sure this brings a lot of good memories and at the same time sadness to hear it is leaving. After much evaluation, many advises and quotations, it has been decided that P4-BON should be taken elsewhere, where it could be either repaired or used for parts. In May of 2011, AFC will remove the aircraft from the Airport premises and will prepare it to be placed into a container and shipped to Daytona, Florida. AFC would like to request those people who have flown or worked on this aircraft, to come and give us a hand to remove it from the airport premises. If you would like to help, please email [email protected]. AFC would like to thank you advance for your cooperation and support.

Don’t Be on this Flight “This is Captain Sinclair speaking. On behalf of my crew I’d like to welcome you aboard British Airways flight 602 from New York to London. We are currently flying at a height of 35,000 feet midway across the Atlantic. If you look out of the windows on the starboard side of the aircraft, you will observe that both starboard engines are on fire. If you look out of the windows on the port side, you will observe that the port wing has fallen off. If you look down towards the Atlantic Ocean, you will see a little yellow life raft with three people in it waving at you. That’s me your captain, the co-pilot, and one of the air stewardesses. This is a recorded message. Have a good flight!"
