A letter from our Chapter President,

With the fencing business on a summer rebound most of us have been trying to keep up, trying to fit in the fun that we are supposed to have while it is still warm out. A few larger than normal projects in the North-west have tied up crews throughout our membership. With large projects come large burdens to key people within our member companies, that is likely you. Feeling a little tired? In talking to many of you it has been a slow route of progress back to what could be considered a normal summer. We have not seen as many plan center projects that will be putting work on our boards in a few months, but the new project opportunities still trickle in. Both public and private work is being posted on a regular basis with competition all chas-ing it with a strong hunger, not much new there. Have we each gotten our share ? In our chapter news, we are seeing details start to materialize for our upcoming Reno tabletop show with Dick Boyle taking the lead which will likely make the new President Elect the busiest man we know over the next two years. Dennis Fleck is easing into his role as treasurer, working with Serena as our new team solidifies. Just a few days and we all join together for one of what looks like will be the biggest Summer Fun events of the Pacific Northwest Chapter. Teri and Don at Builders Fence have put their hearts and souls into making this a memorable event as we find our-selves at Semiahmoo. In looking at where we are staying on Google Maps (LINK) it appears as though we will be on a half mile finger that sticks out into a beautiful bay - looking forward to seeing what it looks like in per-son. If you don’t already have your reservations we would still love to have you sign up! What does our friend Alex need at “The Come Along”? Input, along with a side of more input. He has done a good job with the graphics but without input from our group it could become a few pages of ads, the only good news would be that one of them would be my own. Please send in the recent project that you are proud of to qualify for the “Project of the Quar-ter”. Just ask Town and Country Fence as they bask in the glory of having their recent military project featured in this issue, that could have been you. Bottom line, we need you....it’s good to be needed, right?

Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club

Designed by Arnold Palmer, Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club is Wash-

ington's #6 public course as rated by Golfweek, 2011. This tree-lined masterpiece allows you to relax

and enjoy nature at its best. The golfing challenge is second to none, with water in play on five holes and

67 strategically placed bunkers. The fairways are rolling and generous, with fast and challenging greens.

Tee box placements adjust the degree of difficulty to make the course playable for golfers of all skill lev-

els, yet at 7,005 yards from the tips, this course challenges even tour players. Semiahmoo is open to the

public on odd days of the month. The Semiahmoo Golf Course offers a driving range and putting and

chipping greens. Our well appointed Pro Shop and clubhouse includes a restaurant, lounge, snack bar

and banquet room, plus a new outdoor event pavilion.

Loomis Trail Golf & Country Club

Loomis Trail Golf Course was designed by Graham Cooke and is the #4

public golf course in Washington as rated by Golfweek, 2011. It’s also the

only course in Washington state to make the nation's Top 100. Con-

structed with the Northwest in mind, Loomis Trail is at the top of the list

for year-round play. The scenic beauty is unsurpassed, and the consistently smooth, fast, and true greens

put Loomis trail among the Northwest's finest courses. An extensive canal and lake system brings water

into play on all 18 holes, giving Loomis Trail one of the

highest slope ratings in the state of Washington. The

course is open to the public on even days of the month.

The spacious Tudor-style clubhouse offers a full range of services including a Pro Shop, full-service lounge, snack bar and banquet facilities.

Orca Whale and Porpoise Watch Tour

Adults $99 ~ Youth $89

We offer daily scheduled Whale Watching Tours from Semiahmoo Resort. In August we spot Orca whales and Porpoise on over 90% of our trips. We also frequently encounter sea lions, seals, eagles, otters, and sea birds. Our boats are the fastest whale watching boats leaving from the mainland and we can accomplish more in 3 or four hours than what the big slow boats can do in 6 to 7 hours. We see whales more often than the big boats and once we find the whale we can get closer to them and stay longer. You will get plenty one on one attention from the captain and our trained naturalists because there is never more than 12 people aboard our boats. All our ves-sels are custom built for whale wildlife viewing, and all have heated cabin and full restrooms. Our boats are also equipped with hydrophones so we can listen to the whales after we find them. Most tours last between 3 to 5 hours.

Deer are attracted to a number of different types of plants, like hostas, azaleas, most vegetables, many ev-ergreens and other plants, especially tender buds and new shoots. “Deer are most likely to come into residential areas for food when their own resources are limited, which is at different times through-out the country,” Benner explained. “A barrier is the most effective way to pre-vent them from getting into your yard.” Because deer are able to jump quite high, many typical fences are not

built high enoughto prevent deer from entering a yard. Several types of special fencing have been developed todeter deer. One type of deer fence is baited elec-trified fence. This type of fence uses bait (often peanut butter) to attract deer to it. When the deer goes for the bait, it re-ceives a gentle shock and learns not to go near the fence. Two other types are mesh fencing, one made of wire mesh, the other of polypropyleneplastic. Wire mesh is

A few deer can ruin thou-sands of dollars of land-scaping in a short amount of time. Fence can protect property owners’ invest-ments by barring access to landscaping.“Most people think deer are only a problem in rural areas, but deer populations are growing in fringe areas like the sub-urbs because no hunting is allowed there. Plus all the nice landscaping in the suburbs is like a smor-gasbord for deer,” said Al Benner, of Benner’s Gar-dens in New Hope, PA.

and wire mesh deer fence can be rein-forced with electrified wire. While fencing can keep deer from entering a yard, Ben-ner cautions that the entire area must be enclosed. “Deer will follow a fence until they find an opening, like a driveway. attached to posts and constructed quite high, up to 8’. Polypropylene can be attached to trees or posts and also comes in 8’ high rolls, though Benner suggests staking about 6” of the fence to the ground to prevent deer from pushing under it. Polypropylene is unique not only because it can be installed on trees but also because it is black and virtually disappears into the landscape. Polypropylene can be reinforced with high tensile, coated wire on the top and at 3’ for areas with heavy deer pressure,
