The 70’sWomen’s Fashion

“Those who lived through the 70s remember it largely as a wonderful celebration of peace following a decade of chaos and turmoil. It was – for many – the era of funky clothes and happy sitcoms. It was 10 years full of changing fashion trends, from brightly-colored flared trousers and tie-dyed tees to leisure suits and peasant blouses.”

“For women, it was indeed a decade of change. Their place was no longer solely “in the home”. More and better jobs became available for those of the female persuasion and the sexual revolution allowed them to let their hair down without fear of gaining a “reputation.”

Background:Hamilton was born in London, but WW2 interrupted his schooling. As an evacuee he spent a great deal of time in the countryside of Dorset, England which inspired all of his work.

His works of Art that Anne noted as inspirations:“The Age of Innocence” ( see image below)

For the atmosphere of the collection, Anne was inspired by David Hamilton's photos.

The atmosphere of the photos is usually a rural, bucolic and dreamlike atmosphere.

Many famous photographer of the 70s are especially known for creating works that illustrate innocent girls in very vaporous and sensual atmospheres.

His dreamlike and very aerial style met immediate success at the beginning of his career and even today:

"If he was a poet, he would be

romantic. Hamilton infiltrates into

an already long series of soft

dreamers.”-Anne Fontaine

Farah FawcettFamous 1970s Actress

Farah was born on February 2, 1947 and died on June 25, 2009 from cancer. Her main claim to fame was her star role in the 1976 sitcom, Charlie’s Angels, which was later turned into a movie. The plot of Charlie’s Angel’s focused on three women who worked for a private investigation agency. It was one of the first shows to showcase women in roles traditionally reserved for men.

“Farah personified the woman of the 1970s with a

personal touch and a looseness which stays, even today,

in our memories. She also personified a free generation,

opened by spirit with a need for emancipation.”

– Anne Fontaine

It is important to note the style in this sitcom.

“Jumpsuits, high-waisted

pants, glamour one-piece

swimsuits, linen skinny

were the fetish pieces of

"Charlie’s Angels.”- Anne

Fontaine

The  Hippy  Movement

The hippie subculture was originally a youth movement that arose in the US during the mid-1960s, swiftly spreading to other countries around the world.

The term ‘hippie’ comes from hipster and was initially used to describe deadbeats (ex. JimiHendrix) who had moved into Greenwich Village, NYC and San Francisco’s Haight- Asbury district.

The early ideologies included many countercultural values. They listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution. The beginning of the 1970s was characterized by

the conflict of the Vietnam War, and a slightly, military atmosphere. Anne included some important pieces of this period such as beige, Saharan-style garments, military Jackets, cotton khakis and printed muslin camouflage to represent the era.

ABBA wrote the songs for the hit musical MAMMA MIA which was later turned into a romantic comedy movie starring Meryl Streep. The movies are light-hearted and very fun spirited, much like the 1970s and this collection.

“Taking Woodstock,” produced in 2009, is a retrospective documentary on the symbolic festival and the hippy culture.

Vanessa Paradis, born December 22, 1972 is a French singer, model and actress. She became a child star at 14 with the worldwide success of her single , “Joe le Taxi,” and has had a successful career ever since. 1970 meets 2010RETURN TO NATURE

Like Woodstock, a famous outdoor music festival from the 1970s, being outside and celebrating nature has made a comeback. Anne pointed out several events in France such as the Weekend of the Pentecost and the Major Nature Operation, both which took place in May 2010 and gave attendees the chance to spend "A week-end in the countryside"and “To take up with the nature and the spirit of freedom.” – Anne Fontaine

The tremendous focus that society has today on ‘being green’ and ‘Green Peace,’ are other examples of the return to nature that we are experiencing. It might be important to consider the connection between Anne’s current philanthropic work and the environmental aspects of the 1970s that are represented in this collection.
