Casa Brasil is a sector-based development strategy for the furniture industry that values design as a tool for competitiveness and market differentiation. In the ongoing mission of Sindmóveis, Salão Design plays a fundamental role in providing designers with an environment for free creation, where creativity can be explored to the fullest and the final product is solely committed to providing appropriate solutions to the criteria imposed on design itself: concept, form and function, innovation, environmental impact and production feasibility.

In its 25-year history, Salão Design has provided opportunities for unique experiences to the participants in its three classes: to students, the experience of the future profession, to professionals, the constant search for what is new, and to manufacturing companies, the encouragement and appreciation of designer furniture.

The evaluation process of the award is thorough, respecting the dedication and talent of each contestant. The 17th edition of the competition, which is linked to the Casa Brasil and follows the focus of the high-end furniture and accessories fair, handed out 29awards. The judging panel consisting of academics and design professionals evaluated 776 projects entered in seven categories: Furniture for Bedrooms, Furniture for Dining and Living Rooms, Furniture for Kitchens, Laundry Rooms and Bathrooms, Outdoor Furniture, Home-office and Office Furniture, Home Utensils and Lighting.

Our full commitment to the Salão Design saw as a result a scenario where everyone wins and the ideas blossom. For Sindmóveis, the greatest reward is to see that gradually the designer's work starts to be perceived in the country and that many products created for the award enter the market and are well-accepted.

In an effective market with potential, design with creative solutions has been seen by companies and consumers as a key element for the development of new products and business success. Design is essential for the market strategy of the company in order to develop competitiveness and, consequently, to achieve better results. It is the combination of creativity and technology, or rather, the combination of the designer and the manufacturing company that encourages the growth of communities, municipalities and our country.

Design has a direct influence on the perceived value of a product and it often prospects and finds new product niches, markets and segments.

Design is a key component to improve the competitiveness of new products and companies. Organizations need to invest in design to avoid losing good ideas, and opportunities for business and growth.

Salão Design is a showcase of design. It aims to combine creativity with technological innovation through design and highlight the skill and talent of professionals, students and manufacturing companies.

It also provides a development environment for students, encouraging them to participate, together with their supervisors, in order to be prepared for the demands of their professional market.

Salão Design shows how power and potential of the combination between design and industry can contribute to a standard of life and to a better economy. I have no doubt that if the industrial capacity is directly linked to creativity, we will become a great economic and creative potential.

Riccardo BianchiTramontina Teec S.A. Director

Leonardo Lattavo (Rio de Janeiro) - Architect and urban planner with a Master’s in architecture from University College of London. Between 1997 and 2004 he lived in London. During this time he carried out several architectural and interior design projects in England, Italy, Spain and Germany. In 2005, he returned to Brazil to found Lattoog Design along with his partner Peter Moog. Currently he works in the fields of architecture, design and fine arts.

Maria Helena Estrada (São Paulo) – Graduated in journalism, she is a design critic and publishing director of ARC DESIGN magazine. In addition to her work as a specialized journalist, she organizes and promotes exhibitions dedicated to the design field. She has organized and taken part in seminars and conferences on issues related to design, invited by several institutions and associations in Brazil and abroad. She was the curator of the Biennial Brazilian Design Exhibition in 2012 and is the curator of Casa Brasil.

Ivens Fontoura (Paraná) – Designer and museographer. As a university professor, he established and supervised the first postgraduate course in furniture design in Brazil. Former president of the National Association of Designers and the Latin American Association of Design. He is currently the president of the Brazilian Association of Design Critics.

Gabriel Simón Sol - Mexican industrial designer, founding member of the Association of Industrial Designers of Mexico. University professor since 1976, he has been teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the Autonomous Metropolitan University and other national and international universities. He was a member of the judging panel of the Di-mueble competition held during the International Expo-Mueble fair in Guadalajara - Mexico in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013. He began his professional career in 1970 and has been a prominent professional in furniture design. Currently, he has two businesses: Artécnia, which provides consultancy service on industrial design and Muebles Buin, which manufactures and sells furniture designed by himself.

Ilse Lang (Rio Grande do Sul) – Architect and founder of Faro Design - Porto Alegre - Ilse participated in numerous national and international exhibitions of Brazilian design and has also received several awards including Salão Design Casa Brasil and Movelsul Brasil, If Design, Idea Brazil and the Arc Design Award.

SALÃO DESIGN 2013 Judging Panel

It was a great pleasure to once again be a member of the judging panel of Salão Design Casa Brasil.

Many of the entries helped promote considerable discussions among jurors. In general, these were the products that received awards and that made our job enjoyable.

During the analysis of the ideas, both at the initial and the final stages, it was evident that wood still prevails as the most used raw material by designers. Seats and tables also remained as the predominant products.

Surprising (and delightful) entries drew the attention of this juror especially for their materials and alternative uses: a can opener for both left and right handed people, a cork lamp that can be fully disassembled, a folding armchair made entirely of cardboard, a beautiful wooden macramé swing, fabric drawers ...

The winning projects show that a broad criterion was used in the judging process. The award-winning products included artisanal and also more industrial and technological features, sometimes playful, sometimes marked by rationality.

We also noted an increasing interest of foreign designers for Salão Design and this was reflected in the results: there were award-winning products from Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba and Colombia, but designers from various regions of Brazil were also awarded.

1. CANTINA BENTADesigner and artisan Renato Imbroisi and architects and curators of Casa Brasil, Tina and Lui, created a collection of design products made by artisans from Bento Gonçalves and surrounding area, using some traditional craft techniques brought by Italian immigrants.

2. MATERIABRASILMateriaBrasil, a Brazilian material library, will showcase 100 Brazilian raw materials aimed at the furniture industry during Casa Brasil 2013.The project will also feature the EXPERIMENTA show, exhibiting products made from the selected raw materials. The EXPERIMENTA show was organized by CBDI, in Rio de Janeiro.

3. A DESIGNER FOR A COMPANYThe third edition of the project aims to integrate manufacturing companies with designers to create a unique product, which will be launched during Casa Brasil 2013.

5. STUDIOSA space reserved for design studios where designers can show to the visitors to the fair products that they have developed and also negotiate directly with customers. It is also a way to draw the attention of the industry to the opportunity of working with these designers.

6. BANCO DE IDEIAS – TEMÁTICA BANCO DA COPASecond edition of the Bench of Ideas project. Twelve Brazilian architects and interior designers developed benches based on the World Cup theme.

7. ORCHESTRA BRASIL DESIGNERS SHOWBem Estar, Bem Viver (Well-being, Living Well) is the theme of the show focused on designers aimed at one of their main goals: to facilitate and brighten everyday life through design, beauty and quality.The Orchestra Brasil project is organized by Sindmóveis in partnership with Apex-Brasil.

8. CELEBRAR DESIGN MERCOSULAn exhibition of approximately 30 award-winning products from Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, selected by a group of curators from the three participating countries.The aim of the exhibition is to promote the regional design, showing products that have stood out in MERCOSUR, taking into account their uniqueness, innovation, quality and design.

9. MOSTRA SERGIO RODRIGUES + FERNANDO MENDESOne of the most important representatives of the Brazilian design and his disciple prepared a show dedicated to new and famous pieces especially for Casa Brasil - eight by Sergio Rodrigues and seven by Fernando Mendes. The joint project was conceived when Mendes received the license to manufacture 50 models of the collection created by his master. By intelligently combining interior design and structural architecture in the manufacture of the most varied models designed by Rodrigues, recovering original drawings and improving their manufacturing process using more rational systems, Fernando was given one of the great lessons taught by Sergio Rodrigues to the Brazilian culture.

10. TREES – CASA BRASIL SETTINGDesign and craftsmanship go beyond the booths at Casa Brasil 2013. The architects and members of the show curatorship, Tina and Lui, will decorate the setting of the area for special projects and the entrance hall of the fair with trees made of fabric, in partnership with the designer and weaver Renato Imbroisi and Fleury & Layus Arquitetura based in São Paulo . They consist of twenty-four 4-8 meter pieces, created especially for the event, made of cotton yarn and plant fibers. The fabrics are produced by communities of Minas Gerais, using traditional weaving techniques.
