history

In the XI century, the Archbishop of Santiago

Diego Xelmirez and the King Alfonoso VII of

Castille exchange the lands of Tabeirós,

Tabeirolos and Castro do Faro.

Since the XII century these lands, which now form

the municipality of A Estrada were politically

divided in different jurisdictions ruled by a

nobleman or by the Archbishop.

Festivals and legends There are two very famous festivals. A fishing

festival “Festival of Salmon” and a horse

festival “A Rapa das Bestas”.

The latter was declared a festival of touristic

interest by UNESCO. Its origin is in the old

tradition of bringing down wild horses from the

mountains to tame them for farms.

This magic night coincides with the summer solstice

It has special characteristics in Galicia. It is the night dedicated to fire. There are bonfires everywhere.

Plants have the best curative and magic properties on that night.

That is why girls pick them up and put them in a bowl with water which stays all night under the moon light.

In the morning all the members of the family wash themselves with it.
