    BackgroundThe AESGP Annual Meeting has been for decades the best attended and mostsignificant meeting of the consumer health industry. It brings together more than 400delegates from all kind of stakeholder organisations and the industry. Major trendsfor the sector are elaborated with leading experts in the field. In addition, the AESGPAnnual Meeting is a unique occasion to meet colleagues from the industry and relevantorganisations in the political and commercial environment.

    Objective of the meetingSelf-care has become widely recognised as an important part of healthcare. But whatare the implications? How can innovation be brought to the market place so thatcitizen empowerment is not only a concept but a growing reality in the 21st century?New research on the economic and social value, but also trends in regulation ofnon-prescription medicines, food supplements and self-care medical devices, will bepresented at the conference and discussed with stakeholders. Key decision makersand leaders of the consumer health industry will provide the political perspectives onhow to make real progress on the provision of high quality self-care products.

    16.00 The new European Union platform for thepromotion of self-care systems

    In order to make progress in the wide promotion of self-care, a close cooperationwith all relevant stakeholders is a key prerequisite. Such a cooperationhas become far more intensive over the last years and is now supportedand facilitated by the new European Union (EU) project on the promotion ofself-care systems, which is a most useful extension of the work on goodgovernance of non-prescription medicines carried out under the mandate ofthe previous European Commission. The session will give an update of thenew EU project and discuss how to make the new platform relevant for theEuropean citizens.

    09.00 Self-care medical devices and food supplements:New drivers for the self-care market?

    Substance-based, self-care medical devices and food supplements have becomean important part of self-care. However, their regulatory future is uncertain. Thecurrent revision of the medical device legislation addresses the adequate futurelegal basis for substance based medical devices with different approaches underconsideration. In the area of food supplements, the evaluation of botanical claimscontinues to be put on hold with uncertainties for the whole marketplace

    including in particular herbal medicinal products, for which an elaborated systemhas been put in place in the European Union. The session will give an overview onwhere the debate stands and what will be the likely future environment.

    14.00 How to ensure availability of safe products? Over the last years, there has been an unprecedented increase in discussions

    about safety issues on the European level, the so-called referral procedures.Questions were raised if all these procedures were justified and if theydo not unnecessarily question existing products and hamper the move tonon-prescription status.

    The session will also look at the intensive ongoing work in relation to theimplementation of the directive on falsified medicines with potentiallyconsiderable implications in the marketplace.
