ELECTRO-THERMAL ICE PROTECTIONUltra provides the innovative electro-thermal ice protection system for theleading edge of Boeing’s new 787composite aircraft wing. The system isdesigned to provide high availabilityand low cost of ownership and is akey enabler of the advanced wingdesign which contributes to the 787’shigh fuel-efficiency. Ultra’s specialistcapability has been further endorsedby selection to provide engine intakeand lift fan (STOVL variant) iceprotection for the F-35 Joint StrikeFighter (JSF) aircraft. This system alsoincorporates custom, ruggedharnesses and connectors. Ultraprovides ice protection systems forhelicopter engine inlets, propellersand windshields which are designedto operate in either an anti-icing, de-icing or hybrid mode.

ACTIVE NOISE AND VIBRATION CONTROLUltra is the leading supplier of aircraftactive noise and vibration controlproducts with systems installed onmore than 1300 aircraft worldwideincluding Bombardier’s Q-series,Beechcraft King Air, Saab 340 and2000, and Lockheed C-130. Ultra’ssystems are designed to reduce thecabin noise and vibration generatedby the aircraft’s propellers. The systemuses an array of sensors (bothmicrophones and accelerometers) tomeasure the noise and vibration inthe cabin and an array of actuators(either loudspeakers or vibrationactuators) to cancel this noise. Allsystem components are hiddenbehind the aircraft trim and providenoise control where it is needed, atthe passenger’s head-height.

PROPELLER BALANCEMONITORING SYSTEM (PBMS)Ultra provides systems capable ofmonitoring the vibration caused bypropeller imbalance. They monitorthis during normal service flying. ThePBMS can be installed in conjunctionwith active noise and vibrationcontrol, or as a stand-alone system. To add PBMS to the active noisecontrol system requires the additionof a single accelerometer per engine. The operator determines the balancesolution using an intuitive laptop-based user interface. As Ultra’ssystem uses flight data, it provides asuperior balance solution to systemswhich rely on ground running forpropeller balance. Up to four enginescan be monitored simultaneously andthere is no requirement for dedicatedflights or ground runs.

PROPELLER CONTROLUltra has a long history in the design, development and production of highintegrity, safety-critical controlsystems. In many cases, theseproducts are located in very harsh(high temperature and high vibration)environments, such as engine casingsand nacelles. An example of this isthe propeller electronic controllersupplied to the Bombardier Q400aircraft which provides the criticalinterface and control between theengine electronic controller and thepitch actuation system. It incorporatesa dual-lane architecture featuring anumber of interlocks to ensure safety, including propeller ‘autofeather’function and is designed to DesignAssurance Level A.

TEMPERATURE SENSORS Ultra is an innovative supplier oftemperature instrumentation for theOriginal Equipment Manufacturer(OEM), military/civil aerospace, process industry and nuclear powermarkets. Ultra has proven capabilitiesto not only design temperaturesensing devices for extremelydemanding applications, but alsomeet the unique requirements of itscustomers. Ultra is atthe forefront of developments in cold-gas ejection systems, its systemshaving been selected for demandingprogrammes such as: F-35 JSF, BRU-61small diameter bomb carriage system,X-45 J-UCAS demonstrator, F-15EStrike Eagle cost operational supportsavings initiative.

SEEKER COOLINGHiPPAG™ for infrared detectorcooling is an integrated pure aircompressor and filtration systemwhich is designed to replacerechargeable gas bottles. HiPPAG™has proven its reliability in-service onkey US Navy and NATO platforms. The system draws in atmospheric airto provide a continuous supply ofhigh pressure pure air, which resultsin unlimited mission duration andeliminates the logistics burdenassociated with gas bottles. HiPPAG™generates the gas where it is needed, within the launcher, and reliablypurifies it to the very higheststandards. Gas is always available ‘on-demand’ and the potential sourcesof contamination are eliminated.

Versions of HiPPAG™ are availablethat can perform the weaponsejection and seeker cooling functionsfrom the same unit. The system canbe scaled to provide services tomultiple pylons from a single unit, such as for weapons bay applications.

Ultra has designed and tested aunique capability to provide highpressure hoses that are flexible at5000 PSI. This allows for pylonsmounted on weapons bay doors to beserviced from a HiPPAG™ fitted to thenon-moving part of the weapons bay.
