Aeronautics and computational engineering

With expertise in fundamental and applied aeronautics research, we have repeatedly demonstrated value through our close collaborations with industry. The Rolls-Royce Technology Centre for Computational Engineering is an example of a highly productive industrial relationship. Key expertise include:

- Flight simulation through the Microsoft Institute for High Performance Computing- Multi-disciplinary design optimisation- Aerodynamics, turbulence and flow experimentation and modelling- Autonomous air vehicle design and build- Wind tunnels and flight simulation test facilities

Equipment health management & prognostics

We combine electrical systems, sensing, computational and materials technologies to enable the reliable monitoring and prediction of component health and failure. Examples of work include:

- Health monitoring of new generation aircraft bearings- Microfluidic devices for structural health monitoring and integrity

Electrical power systems & electronics

We have a broad portfolio of capabilities across electrical power systems, electronics and sensing. We develop market-leading technology through fundamental modelling, practical experimentation and product development. Example research themes include:

- Applied Electromagnetism - High Voltage Engineering - Nanomaterials and Dielectrics - Robotics and Control - Superconductivity- Micro Electronic Mechanisms (MEMS)

Airports, ATM & operations

Through multi-disciplinary collaboration we provide business analysis, modelling and optimisation expertise. This enables us to deliver value for our partners in many areas including:

- Statistical analysis of air traffic delay at airports- Movement scheduling to optimise runway capacity- Forecasting demand and spares stock-holding policy- Modelling retail impact of airport check-in procedures- Price and carbon cost modelling

Aircraft noise

Our Institute for Sound and Vibration Research is a recognised centre of excellence and it hosts research technology centres for Rolls Royce and Airbus. Areas of expertise include:

- Gas turbine noise prediction and modelling- Airframe aerodynamics and aero-acoustics- Anechoic chamber noise testing- Psychoacoustics and trade-offs

Human factors

We cover many aspects of Human Factors and our facilities have been pioneering research for over 40 years. ISVR’s Human Factors Research Unit and theTransport Research Group cover such areas as:

- Subjective responses- Biodynamic responses- Health effects- Motion sickness- Cockpit Ergonomics- Human responses to combined noise and vibration

The University of Southampton offers world-class research expertise and consultancy services to the aerospace sector.

We provide the ideas, solutions and talent to meets the needs of aviation, space and defence in the 21st century.

Come and discuss your challenges and ambitions with our team of experts.
