Activity No. 1 - Event -DIY-Drone Workshop 15June2019 at IIT Mumbai. One-day workshop on Drone Technology was held at IIT Bombay on 15th June, 2019.
The introductory talk on drones was delivered by Prof. Rajkumar Pant, in which he described the various types of drones based on the mechanism to produce lift to overcome gravity. He described the various forces acting on a drone and gave an overview of the dynamics of drones. He explained the function of various components of quadcopter drones, viz., the frame, propulsion unit, control system, sensors and the power unit. He illustrated the need and functions of various sensors mounted on a drone. In the end, he cautioned the participants about uncertainties in drone behaviour due to differences in motor RPMs, offset in CG and the effect of wind gusts, thus bringing home the need to calibrate the drone before each flight.
Mr. Raman Verma explained the components of the palm-top drone kit and also elaborated on the procedure to be followed for assembly of the kit. He was assisted by around 20 volunteers from Aerospace Engineering Department of IIT Bombay.

The volunteers helped the teams to download and install the DRONE CONTROLLER app on their smartphones and imparted training on using it to control the drone. They also taught them how to calibrate the drone before first flight and after any modifications eg: Change of battery, motor and propellers.
The teams then spent nearly one hour each on flying the drones with adequate control. Each team was given three batteries. Three teams were assigned one volunteer each, who was constantly by their side during the practice sessions, guiding them and helping them out. These practice sessions continued till all the batteries were discharged. After this, the participants replenished themselves with lunch and simultaneously, replenished their drones by charging their batteries. All teams were given two fully charged batteries to further hone their flying skills and familiarise themselves with the arena where the Elimination Round for the drone flying competition was to be held. The arena consisted of two hoops of 2 ft. diameter and 6 ft. height, which were placed at an offset distance from each other. After this, the teams moved to the foyer to learn how to fly their drones so that they could practice to gain confidence and control. However, before the teams were allowed to fly their drones, Raman Verma gave a detailed safety briefing, which included instructions on what to do if the drones go out of control and best practices to avoid any injury or damage due to mishandling. He highlighted the pitfalls to avoid, and also gave a live demonstration of safely flying the drone

After the tea break the Final Round was held. The arena was complicated by introducing three additional hoops of varying heights and orientations. The shortlisted teams were asked to fly through as many of these hoops as they could within 120 s. They were awarded 10 points for passing through each hoop, and a bonus 20 points for passing through one hoop which had a stopper element along its diagonal, effectively dissecting the hoop. A penalty of 5 points was introduced if the drone touched the ground or any hoop during flight. The Final Round was also witnessed by the escorts and parents of some workshop participants. Certificates were awarded in the closing ceremony to members of the top two teams that were shortlisted after the Final Round.
Certificates were also awarded to all volunteers as well as every participant. Feedback about the drone workshop was obtained from everyone which was quite positive and encouraging.
