Each year, Ralph and Maggie Burridge pull out every stop

they can find to create the most amazing fly-in and race

weekend on the

beautiful island of

Alderney. The hos-

pitality, friendship and welcome

we were given is only surpassed

by the organisational skills of

Ralph and Maggie creating a very

smooth running weekend.

Several racers, navigators, fami-

lies and ‘significant others’ made

a week-long holiday out of this

great adventure, visiting Jersey and Guernsey too.

Su and Glynn Farrar

became engaged on

the island in 2009 and

married the following

year, just before the

race weekend, at the

Braye Beach Hotel on

the island. So each race

weekend of every year

on Alderney is a wed-

ding anniversary for

them. Also, with a large contingent of race crew on the island it didn’t

take much to bump into a fellow Royal Aero Club member sampling the

liquid hospitality

of the island.

Early arrivals

were given a

rare treat, His

Royal High-

ness Prince Edward landed in his helicopter on Braye Common to visit

several establishments and schools on Alderney as part of the 60th an-

niversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The Duke of Wessex is a

Gold Award holder.

There were also a

very large contingent

of 200 French people

on the Island. The

cultural exchange

twinning weekend

celebrated with

dance, music, art and

socialising.

Phil Marsden decided to organise a ‘Northern’ themed Friday night with

fancy dress and fish ‘n chips. The southern contingent were a little un-

sure for the need of ferrets down your

trousers, but luckily a qualified transla-

tor (Su Farrar) stood ready to interpret

the jokes and songs. One particular

poem, recited by the Chief Flying In-

structor of Netherthorpe International

Aerodrome, Christine Carlin,

while standing on a table,

the subject of which was her

lack of care for two parts of

her body, was hilarious. Well

done Christine! May gravity

never take effect.

The Alderney race weekend is very special for the race pilots, it is

the last weekend of the Royal Aero Club 3R’s racing calendar, which

means that many trophies and championships are decided. The point

system is an accumulative process that starts at the first race of the

season and gradually increases as racers gain points based on their

finishing position.

The position on the score board for each race pilot, navigator and team

can change from one day to the next as points are awarded. Please

see the results pictures to discover the winners for this year.

The race on Alderney has

a short if not very exciting

course, this makes it a six lap

event. One contestant found

it a little difficult to count to six

and made a dash for the finish

line after five laps. It would be

wrong to tell you that it was

Erik, but there you go.

The 2016 race season may

well be the most successful

for many years. With a total of

26 race teams competing in

the season. We have raced at 8 amazing venues and welcomed new

racing teams and made many new friends. For next year, Cliff will be

returning to race his beautiful Cessna 180 and we have five new racers

signed up already! Incuding a PA28 and another RV.

We have seen two very new and keen ground crew join the fold. Their

current role seems to be keeping their parents very busy, but after train-

ing in ‘how to beat the handicappers’ and ‘ordering at the bar’, they will

be just fine.

At the end of the season, it is important to reflect on all the people

that make our racing possible. The ‘behind the scenes’ production is

enormous. The venues are contacted, booked and organised a year

in advance by Martin Gosling. Pete Chilcott lubricates the committee

wheels and has organised the Symposium for next year (4th. Feb.).

Cliff Hawkins negotiates with and informs the CAA to get our exemp-

tions and permissions for the year ahead – let alone spend all last year

in the handicapping room working tirelessly and under pressure to get

the results out on time. We’ve had Phil Marsden and Brian Manning

as Chief Stewards and John Kelsall as Clerk of the Course. Unseen

to many, Dave Lee balances the financial books and monitors expen-

ditures. Mike Pearson as Chairman has represented us at The Royal

Aero Club meetings in London and dealt with a plethora of complicated

and sensitive issues throughout the year. The list continues, so if you

get chance to say thanks to these people, it would be well received.

Some members feel there is a distance between themselves and the

committee. With so many new members, this is a good time to remind

everyone that if you wish to ask a question, or suggest a way of improv-

ing systems, or require any information at all, your first port of contact

is with your Pilot Reps. These are currently Martin Gosling and Dan

Pangbourne. Although available anytime by email and phone, please

be reminded that at every race weekend you can buttonhole one of

your reps and have a chat. If they don’t know the answer they will either

introduce you to the person that will or find any answers you need.

Contact is encouraged!Sophia Crossan Julia Morton

2017 is going to be a fantastic race season. Let’s all get together at the

symosium on the 4th February, where all the technical and social is-

sues for the season will be discussed and defined. There may be time

for a quick drink too.

The Friday night northern extravaganza included a bingo compe-

tion for charity. The charity chosen to recieve the proceeds was Milly’s

Foundation, which is an Alderney charity for people affected by Demen-

tia.

£415 was raised and presented. Please see the letter of thanks from

Colin Williams.
