Federico García Lorca Route

Federico García Lorca was a world famous poet and playwright from Granada. There are four museums where visitors can learn about the author and his life. The first is the Museo-Casa Natal de Federico García Lorca in Fuente Vaqueros where he was born, the second is the Casa Museo Federico García Lorca in Valderrubio, where he spent his youth, the third is the Museo de la Huerta de San Vicente, the summer house of the poet’s family in Granada, and the fourth is Centro Federico García Lorca, in Granada city.

The Parque Federico García Lorca in Alfacar is a memorial to the poet where he is believed to be killed in the beginning of Spanish Civil War.

The poet and playwright from Granada (1898-1936) was associated with a group of artists who were known as Generación del 27. He is considered one of the most important Spanish writers of the 20th century.

His literary life started in Granada with his first book Impresiones y Paisajes (1918). After it was published he moved to Madrid to continue studying Law, Philosophy and Humanities. Whilst living in Student Halls (1919-1928), he became friends with the painter Salvador Dalí, the filmmaker Luis Buñuel, and the poet Rafael Alberti. He later worked with the poet Juan Ramón Jiménez, the musician Manuel de Falla and members of the SAI (Iberian Artists Society).

His most important plays include Yerma, La Casa de Bernarda Alba and Bodas de Sangre. His most famous poems include El Romancero

Gitano, Poeta en Nueva York and his Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías.

Lorca’s legacy is made up of poetry and dramatic works. His style of writing is based on traditional folk stories from his Andalucian birthplace, (including folk songs, ballads and

nursery rhymes), with later influences from the avant-garde era (symbols which portray an irrational and dreamlike world). Universal subjects such as nature, love and death all feature in his lyrics and plays, and illustrate Federico García Lorca’s own views of life.

The perfect combination of mountain, beach and city break

Granada, captivating beauty

The Alhambra is the symbol of Granada, the fortress and palace built by the kings of the Nasrid dynasty of the ancient Kingdom of Granada. It is the most visited monument in Spain, a true masterpiece of Muslim art in Europe, which was officially declared a World Heritage Site in 1984.

The original core of the town of Granada still maintains the captivating magic of its Moorish past in the Albaicín quarter, declared a World Heritage Site in 1984. To stroll through the Albaicín quarter is like taking a walk through the history of Granada itself.

Andalusia is also famous for its beaches and sunshine, specially Granada’s coastal area which offers dozens of beaches and small

coves with crystal-clear water, 320 sunny days a year and an average temperature of 20 degrees. It comes as a surprise to many visitors that you can ski in Sierra Nevada, the most southern resort in the whole of Europe and one of the best ski resorts in Spain. The resort offers 105 km of pistes distributed over 116 routes of varying difficulty.

Your visit to Granada must include eating tapas. This is the custom of eating small and varied portions of delicious local dishes, with an aperitif in restaurants and bars. Tapas are usually served free of charge with an alcoholic drink like Alhambra beer or a glass of wine from the Designation of Origin of Granada. It is the waiter who chooses the tapas and serves it to

customers with their drinks. In some bars you can choose the tapas you want from a list.

In your visit to Granada do not forget to inlcude Sacromonte district, the gypsy quarter and heart of what flamenco experts called ‘jondura’ or ‘duende’, a musical form that stems from ‘zambra’, a flamenco song and dance party that first began in the 16th century to celebrate Moorish weddings. In this quarter you will see another architectural curiosity of Granada – las cuevas. These caves used to be inhabited by gypsies, but have now been converted into flamenco staging areas, restaurants, night clubs and tourist accommodation, although some are still inhabited.

Granada, captivating beauty

The cave dwellings in the regions of Guadix, El Marquesado and El Altiplano are the province’s most original type of accommodation. Today there are more than 60 official cave hotels used as tourist accommodation in Granada’s Sacromonte district alone.

Another wonderful landscape is La Alpujarra, that lies between the Sierra Nevada and the Lújar mountain ranges. It opens up to the Mediterranean Sea from the Mulhacén, the highest peak of the Iberian Peninsula. Its landscape is rough yet colourful, scattered with ravines, canyons and valleys with traditional villages lying all around. The villages of La Alpujarra, with their whitewashed houses, are scattered along the slopes between green forests. The main tourist destination is the Barranco de Poqueira, a ravine where the villages of Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira lay.

On the western part of Granada province spans the Poniente Granadino district. It includes mountain ranges, valleys, plains and countryside that together form a rich and diverse landscape. This borderland is a mixture Christian and Arab cultures, with an ancient past. Poniente was the doorway to the capital of the last Nasrid kingdom, made up of white villages with narrow streets built around old castles to defend the border from the Christian attacks. Montefrío, Alhama, Loja and Illora are the most interesting places in this area.

Although it seems that Granada is trapped in time, the city has been able to adapt to the new times by building the Parque de las Ciencias, a one of its kind interactive museum and the first in southern Spain. It is a benchmark for the promotion of science in Europe. Located a few minutes from the historic city centre of Granada, the Science Park has turned about 70,000 m2 into one of the main cultural, sightseeing attractions in Andalucía and into its most visited museum.

Made up of a wide range of permanent and temporary exhibitions, this is a place where you can learn a great deal by taking part in a wide variety of activities, whatever your age.

A special and unique setting that offers singular experiences

Jaen, unique and unforgettable experiences

Jaén province is a quality destination offering unique and unforgettable experiences, less than one hour from the Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport.

The province’s geography is defined by the olive groves extending across the entire landscape, covered by more than 66 million olive trees. This is a vast managed olive “forest” that represents the main extra virgin olive oil supply in the world, with 20% of world production coming from Jaén province. The quality of this olive oil leads to it being

ranked as one of the finest in the world. This along with the proliferation of tourist resources focusing on olive oil and olive trees, make Jaén a paradise for “Olive Oil Tourism”. There are olive oil factories offering guided tours, olive oil themed restaurants, spas with olive oil therapy treatments, walks through olive groves, museums and visitors centres about olive culture, olive oil tasting sessions, specialist shops etc.

Jaén also boasts the largest expanse of protected natural areas in Spain (304,000

hectares), including the second largest in Europe: the Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas Natural Park, where visitors can enjoy a trip on a solar powered boat, hiking along the GR247 Forests of the South trail (a 478 kilometre circular route and the longest in southern Europe), para-gliding, discovering the history of the highest castles in the province, canyoning, horse riding, caving, wildlife photography and much more. The source of Andalusia’s principal river, the Guadalquivir, is in the Cazorla natural park. This is a very special visitor attraction and the perfect place to unwind.

It is one of Jaén’s must-see attractions and boasts the best scenic viewpoint for admiring the landscape of a large part of the province.

Jaén boasts a vast expanse of pasture lands where you can find a range of tourist activities related to the world of bull fighting. A range of different resources are concentrated in Linares, to the north of the province. This is also an interesting city to visit given its mining past,

which has left an indelible mark on Flamenco music.
