AEJMC and ASJMC announce the launch of the Institute for Di-verse Leadership in Journalism and Communication. They willbe seeking applications for Institute fellows in February.

The mission of the Institute is to increase racial, gender and eth-nic diversity in administrative and other senior-level positions injournalism and communication education.

While demographic data on journalism and communication col-lege, school, and department administrators is scarce, an Ameri-can Council on Education (ACE) studyi argued that the lack ofdiversity in university presidencies can be traced to a lack ofracial, ethnic, and gender diversity in the make-up of positionsthat are the recruiting grounds for presidencies, such as dean, director and chair positions.

The ACE study reported that racial and ethnic minorities repre-sented only 13 percent of college presidents. It reported slowprogress in gender diversity, but the 26 percentage of universityleaders who were female may look more impressive than it isbecause women leaders are mostly found in associate colleges.

ACE has a long-running year-long program to prepare future di-verse university administrators. The ACE program gives facultyof color and women training in fundraising, budgeting, commu-nity relations, assessment, accreditation, marketing, and strate-gic planning. ACE leadership program participants receivecareer mentoring, guidance on the application process andshadowing opportunities. The Institute for Diverse Leadershipin Journalism and Communication intends to do just the same –provide the knowledge needed to compete successfully foracademic leadership positions in journalism and communi-cation.

Background: The Institute for Diverse Leadership in Journalismand Communication is based on the AEJMC/ASJMC Journalism

and Mass Communication Leadership Institute for Diversity(JLID) program that ran from 2000 to 2009, thanks to the visionof former AEJMC President Marilyn Kern-Foxworth and ASJMCPresident Shirley Staples Carter. The new proposed Institute willoffer a year-round program to identify, recruit, mentor and trainfuture leaders and administrators. Applicants must be AEJMCmembers and tenured associate or full professors of color orwomen interested in administration. It will be overseen by a six-member Advisory Board of JMC educators and administrators. Our goal is to select eight fellows a year for the program.

Key Components of the Institute:

Workshop Sessions — Four workshops for fellows will be heldduring the 2015 AEJMC Conference, the ASJMC winter work-shop, spring 2016 ACEJMC meeting and the 2016 AEJMC Confer-ence. Workshops will cover a variety of administrative issues, developed by the participants themselves, but includingfundraising, budgets, developing leadership, management styles, communicating up and down, and marketing one’s self in asearch.

MentorProgram —Each fellow willhave a JMC ad-ministratormentor for theyear of the pro-gram. The mentoring relationship consists of monthly contactvia telephone or email, and a week-long visit to the mentor’scampus for a first-hand look at administering a journalism/com-munication program.

Resource Networking — Each Institute fellow will be introducedto current JMC administrators during social and programmingsessions at their workshops. Mentors will introduce fellows toother administrators to help the fellow begin to establish a net-work of resources.

Phenomenal Success Rate: Of the 76 graduates of the JLIDclasses, 41 were people of color (54 percent), 35 were Caucasianwomen (46 percent); with a gender representation of 17 males,59 females. Forty-three graduates (56.5 percent) have becomedeans, directors, associate deans and department chairs. Theseplacements represent 22 people of color and 21 Caucasianwomen, with a gender representation of 11 males and 32 fe-males.

Some examples of these administrative placements include:Dwight Brooks, director of the School of Journalism at MiddleTennessee State University; Jennifer Greer, interim dean of theCollege of Communication and Information Sciences at the Uni-

The Advertising Educational Foundation (AEF) invites applications for its 2015 Visiting Professor Program (VPP).The VPP is a two-week fellowship for tenured or tenure-track professors of advertising, marketing, communications and the lib-

eral arts. In 2014, 15 professors were hosted by advertising agencies in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City. Whether a professoris placed with an agency, a marketing or media company depends upon his/her area of expertise. The number of placements in theVPP is contingent upon the number of companies willing to host a pro-fessor. Preference is given to professors with little or no industry experi-ence and to those who have not already participated in the program.Professors who are placed should know that programs will differ; no twoprograms will be alike. The program is only offered to professors teach-ing in the United States.

The VPP’s objective is to expose professors to day-to-day opera-tions of an advertising agency, marketing or media company; and to pro-vide a forum for the exchange of ideas between academia and industry. The VPP gives professors a greater understanding of andappreciation for the industry while host companies have an opportunity to develop closer ties to academia.

The program will run from June 1-12 and begins with an orientation followed by individual fellowships. Apply only if your aca-demic and personal responsibilities allow you to participate for the full two weeks. Notification will be made in April. Housing isprovided to professors who are traveling from another state. Professors who reside in the host city (Chicago, Los Angeles, NYC, etc.)are expected to provide their own housing. All professors will receive a per diem. Professors pay for travel to and from the hostcity, as well as out-of-pocket expenses.

Visit the On-Campus section on www.aef.com to apply and submit your CV and statement. Letter of recommendation (onschool letterhead) must be mailed and postmarked by Jan. 31. Letter of recommendation is not accepted via fax or email. For moreinformation, contact Sharon Hudson, vice president, program manager, at [email protected] or 212-986-8060.

Mass Communication & Society Announces Call for Papers: “Climate and Sustainability Communication”Guest Editor: Donnalyn Pompper, Temple University

This Mass Communication & Society special issue shall open new conversations for integrating arenas of science and environ-mental communication, political communication, health communication and their respective theory and research methodsets. Links between communication and sustainability have garnered significantly greater attention among scholars inEurope and Scandinavia than in North America. Reasons for this and implications of such outcomes have yet to be thoroughlyexamined. Collectively, business-case approaches far outnumber critical approaches among U.S.-based research on sustain-ability.

Complex problems and opportunities associated with globalization and power inequities require interdisciplinary, creativeapproaches. MC&S, a highly-ranked SSCI journal, offers a perfect forum for inspiring new conversations and advancing cli-mate and sustainability communication research.

The aim of this special issue is to build upon traditional approaches to mass media’s role in shaping and amplifyingclimate/sustainability issues by opening new space for including diverse perspectives of multiple opinion leaders (includingNGOs and institutions) shaped by cultural orientations — and by shaping media used to communicate about them. Suggestedfoci include:

• Role of culture and nation in framing climate and sustainability campaigns• Negotiating power inequities in setting and acting upon sustainability campaign agendas — local, regional, national, global• How have climate/sustainability campaigns and NGOs succeeded, failed, and retrenched? • In what ways do economic systems shape climate and sustainability discourse? • What are the roles of mass media and other communication forms with regard to climate and sustainability programs?• Which have been the most effective techniques (e.g., frames) for advancing sustainability and climate activism and behav-ior change through communication and why?• How can insider-activism (employees as moral actors) work to inspire multinational corporations to reform operations im-pacting climate and sustainability communication?• How might a global ethic interplay with climate/sustainability issues which defy definition or universal acknowledgement? • How can conflicts among cultures and lack of global, ethical and legal regulatory policy with regard to climate and sustain-ability be negotiated in the short- and long-term?• What is the role of theory building in communication beyond supporting “window dressing” and “greenwashing”; deeply-entrenched critiques of sustainability campaigns?• Power of documentaries’ persuasive appeals about climate change and sustainability • In what ways do advertisers assess effectiveness of green marketing campaigns?

Mass Communication & Society invites submissions for this special issue devoted to a symposium on “Climate and Sustain-ability Communication.” A wide range of manuscripts using varied research methods and theoretical frameworks is wel-comed.

Encouraged are empirical studies which bear on the issues described above. Submit only original manuscripts that are notunder consideration with other journals or books.

Deadline for submissions: Manuscripts are to be submitted by June 30 via the Mass Communication & Society online systemat http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mcas following the standard journal submission procedures. Authors should note intheir cover letters that the submission is for the special issue devoted to “Climate and Sustainability Communication.”Final publication will be in Volume 19 (2016).

In addition to the electronic submission process, please send one hard copy to: Donnalyn Pompper, Department of StrategicCommunication, School of Media & Communication, Temple University, 218 Weiss Hall, Philadelphia, PA 19122. The division is open to the broadestpossible range of scholarship, looking atethics across a range of communicativecontexts (e.g., journalism, advertising, public relations, entertainment media, new media, social media, etc.), from arange of theoretical/paradigmatic ap-proaches (e.g., philosophical, critical, soci-ological, psychological, etc.) and using arange of methods (e.g., qualitative, quan-titative, mixed-method, etc.) Theoreti-cal/normative essays grounded in ethicstheory are also welcome, as are manu-scripts related to the teaching of ethics.

In addition to our regular call, the Di-vision is sponsoring a special call focusingon “New Horizons in Media Ethics.” Wealso have awards for top faculty paper, top graduate student paper, and a profes-sional relevance award. All submissionswill be evaluated in the general papercompetition. Authors wishing to be con-sidered for any of the special calls shouldsubmit their paper only once. Special Call for New Horizons in Media Ethics

In addition to our regular call, theMedia Ethics Division is sponsoring a spe-cial call for papers pertaining to “newhorizons in media ethics.” Where is mediaethics headed as a field? Where ought thefield head?

Papers may address, but are by nomeans limited to, the following:

What is the role of normative theoryin the broader canon of mass communica-tion theory? Are there questions of legiti-macy for normative theory, and howmight they be overcome? What is “theo-retical” about normative theory? Is nor-mative theory complementary oroppositional to empiricism?

How do we construct and defendnormative theory in an age of moral rela-tivism?

In a changing media landscape, where an unstable economy and techno-logical innovation have seemingly trans-formed journalism and other forms ofmediated communication, how does thisimpact how we theorize journalism, media, and communication from a norma-tive perspective? How can ethicists con-tribute to the debate on “new media” andits technologies? What do we gain in thenew media environment, and what do welose?

How ought we theorize “change”from a normative perspective? What dotrends in existing ethics scholarship indi-cate about where we are headed as afield? How proficient is current ethicsscholarship in addressing the changingmedia environment? How do we needto adapt our scholarship? What con-cepts/topics/issues ought we be address-ing?

How might ethics scholarship beenriched with dialogues from otherfields/sub-fields/literatures (e.g., moralpsychology, political economy, critical the-ory, media sociology, media effects, media

criticism, democratic theory)? Likewise, how might these other traditions be en-riched by engagement with our scholar-ship? Are there, on the other hand, limitsto this? What are the “boundaries” ofethics scholarship?

What scholars or philosophical tradi-tions possess rich terrain for ethics schol-ars but have generally been overlooked? How might this work be revived? What isthe contribution to theory of these over-looked literatures?

Special call papers should be theo-retical/normative, rather than empirical, although references to empirical work assupport for the arguments made are ofcourse welcome. Papers must be theoreti-cally grounded. Special call papers mustbe marked “Special Call” on the title page. All papers must conform to the style andlength rules outlined above and in theAEJMC Uniform Call for Papers.
