Foreward Hello dear AEGEEans,
The idea for a Movie Library came to the Culture Working Group a
few months ago as a way to promote our own cultural identity and to
help others better understand who we are and where we are coming
from.
We asked for your help in accomplishing this goal and thanks to you
we were able to put together 4 volumes, totalling 80 movies. Thank you
to all those who took the time to answer our survey and help us find
great movies to watch in the future.
Also a big thank you to the rest of the team:Danae Matakou from
AEGEE-Athina and Dionìs Koçi from AEGEE-Turin. Without your
help, this project would have been much more difficult.
Finally, if you feel that there are more movies that should be included
in this list, don’t hesitate to contact us. We are still looking for great
movies (comedy, romance, action, thriller, horror what ever you want),
that represent your countries, they way you and your people see them.
The only request is that these movies represent something notable in
your culture, history, social life. They don’t really need to be new or
blockbuster hits, but good movies from any year.
If you wish to contribute further to this project write us an e-mail at
[email protected] answering these questions:
What is the title of the movie (original and translated)?
What year was it released in?
What genre is it?
Did it win any awards?
Please write a short summary
Who is the director?
Who are the main actors?
Is there a trailer for the movie?
Why should we see it?
Your answers will be introduced in the second edition of the volumes,
to further complete the project.
Happy viewing,
Sabina Guja, AEGEE-Cluj-Napoca

Summary of movie:
In a way of protesting against inhuman living conditions and the shortage of medications caused
by the disintegration of Yugoslavia and its sanctions, a doctor in a hospital decides to close his
clinic for mental illness. His wish is to return the patients to their homes or give them to someone
who is willing to accept them temporarily. Since one of the patients is planning to "get married"
the doctor takes all the patients out on the street and uses the wedding as an excuse. A person
"who can not fly" goes out to the streets with them, but he only exists as a person in the minds of
the patients. However, trouble starts arising on the first step they take outside the clinic. In
freedom the patients (not used to the games of the "normal society") start doing whatever they
want to or feel like, not paying attention to and ignoring the chaos they are causing.

Summary of movie:
This is a movie about a strong, proud man, returning from jail. As he tries to reconnect with his
life, he realizes that he has been changed to the point where he no longer can do "wrong" without
thinking about it. He realizes that he has been abused by his friends and tries to avoid that abuse -
which then resembles honorable life. But in the end, he honorably fails. With a bit of an open
end, the movie lets us finish the story to our liking.

drunk. Her sister, Sole, is separated and works clandestinely as a hairstylist for women.
The two sisters lost their parents in a fire in La Mancha, their birth village, years ago.
Their aunt, Paula, still lives in the village and continues to speak about her sister Irene,
mother of the two sisters, as if she were still alive. When the old aunt dies the situation
changes and the past returns in a twist of mystery and suspense.
Director:

Main actors:
Penélope Cruz
Carmen Maura
Lola Dueñas
Trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4y9KIQ4MRE (trailer)
Why you should see it:
Rare are the movies who celebrate everything that life offers: joy and despair, love and
hate, living and dying, strength and weakness, good and bad. While many movies reduce
life to either good or bad, painting a very simple picture of human relationships,
Almodóvar’s movies display a wide range of emotions, where people laugh and cry at the
same time, achieving a sense of truth that other movies seldom touch.

Manolito Gafotas ( Manolito Four Eyes)
Year:
1999
Genre:
Comedy/ Family
Awards:
Won an award at the Berlinale (2000)
Nominated for a Goya Award (2000)
Summary of movie:
This light, winning comedy, set in the working class district of Madrid's Carabanchel Alto,
traces the life of chubby, bespectacled primary school kid Manolo in the days before and
during the summer holidays. Much of the gentle pathos and humour comes from the fact
that events are viewed from the boy's quirky. Part celebration of working class culture,
part quirky comedy, part road movie, the able central performances and the film's evident
affection, gentle charm and self-confidence make up for the occasional stray into
sentimentality.
Director:
Miguel Albaladejo
Main actors:
David Sánchez del Rey
Adriana Ozores
Roberto Álvarez
Trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH7NocxK324 (trailer)
Why you should see it:
A cute adaptation of the comic, known as Manolito Four Eyes here. The world of young
Manolito, from his absent father to his stern mother, from the bullying children to his
angry teacher, screams of pain and jade, but through his eyes we come to accept these
things as small obstacles we can overcome, or at least adapt to accept. On a trip with his
father, a trucker, we come to laugh at his repeated motion sickness, and his spying on a
late-night rendezvous. Did he really see what we in the audience think he saw? Don't try
to second-guess Manolito Four Eyes!

Trailer:

Why you should see it:
Nefes is first of its kind in Turkey. Through the eyes of a small brigade of soldiers
stationed at the border, the film examines the armed conflict that has been going on for
more than 30 years in south-eastern Turkey. Filmed on the high mountains of southern
Turkey, the landscape provides a stunning and poetic backdrop. The seclusion, hardship
and the tragedy these people had to endure is central to the story. The film has its minor
flaws but nevertheless it is effective in putting the audience in the shoes of these soldiers.
And it is specifically significant to the Turkish citizens; for they will have a chance to
truly empathize with those who rendered services in the region.
