Once all the correct dots are connected in the right order, you recognize a picture which was not visible before. And this is what AED-SICAD’s team has been doing since many years: Work with GIS customers, with strong focus on the utility domain, to find out what are the important IT systems and how these can be connected to let emerge strong and stable business processes, not visible be- fore. System integration is often a touchy subject, where barriers like frictions between departments, what IT interfaces to use, data quality and questions on the design of the processes have to be overcome. AED-SICAD’s team has lived through these questions during many customer system in- tegration projects. The highly skilled and experienced team has been implementing integrations with SAP, DMS, SCADA or network calculation systems since at least 15 years and has built up a very extensive, unique and esteemed know-how in this area. Add the expertise in utility workflows of our customer-focused team, and you will have a hard time to find a comparable set of skills in the market. Besides our experience, AED-SICAD offers within the scope of its Esri-based UT for ArcGIS Product Suite the standard EAI tools UT Integrator and UT Server, which form the technological basis for our work. This allows for different types of integration like e.g. back-end or front-end integration, or complete unification of the GUIs of the systems to be integrated. Connecting the dots is a great children’s game, where you have to connect certain dots in the right order. Once all the correct dots are connected in the right order, you recognize a picture which was not visible before. And this is what AED-SICAD’s team has been doing since many years: Work with GIS customers, with strong focus on the utility domain, to find out what are the important IT systems and how these can be connected to let emerge strong and stable business processes, not visible be-fore. System integration is often a touchy subject, where barriers like frictions between departments, what IT interfaces to use, data quality and questions on the design of the processes have to be overcome. AED-SICAD’s team has lived through these questions during many customer system in-tegration projects.

SAPSAP – GIS IntegrationTraditionally, the SAP system manages rather the administrative and fi nancial side of assets, where-as the GIS focus on technical attributes and geo-graphic location. However, both systems work on the same assets, and this is always only one real-life object. To ensure data integrity and remove duplicate data entry, system integration is critical.

In the maintenance process, e.g. the GIS might serve much better in the selection of assets than the SAP, or the information about the next and the last date of maintenance should be refl ected to all GIS clients. This allows using each system with its inherent strength and passing on the required information to the other IT system. The UT Integ-rator assures back-end, real-time data synchroni-zation, and in the front-end area assures lean and effi cient business processes through unifi ed GIS/SAP GUIs.

NCS – GIS IntegrationAnalyzing the Impact of Prosumers on Your NetworkMaintaining stability in the electrical grid: It is one of the major challenges for electrical utilities in the field of renewable energies. At times when consumption of energy is fine, we now see raises and drops in the low voltage network due to energy producing sources, e.g. wind turbines and solar panels (PV, photovoltaic). These “Prosumers” may cause instabilities in our low voltages dis-tribution networks.

On the basis of ArcGIS Server and UT Server, AED-SICAD provi-des special Apps for fast and simple network impact analysis by means of network calculations together with tools for planning and sketching: One may add new prosumers or real consumers, or one may simulate different network switching constellations. These tools should help utilities to fulfill their legal obligations not only in the context of renewable energies. The UT Server Plan and NCS Apps will help them to perform a quality assessment regarding any new customer application to install a solar panel or an equivalent device in the network. This will improve the overall quality of the distribution network.

Unifying User Interfaces AED-SICAD focuses on delivering to its customers smart user interfaces, which com-bine from different backend IT systems (e.g. SAP and GIS) exactly those data and functions which a certain user in a certain role needs for a certain task in a workflow. For a SAP Shutoff Notification, we e.g. integrate also a GIS web map, allowing finding all affected customers using a downstream trace.

Smart, unified GUIs are not only used in the web, but also in the mobile context: The Collector for ArcGIS is a great, low-cost tool by Esri to collect information in the field. But not until you can serve with this same mobile tool two or more backend IT Systems (e.g. SAP, GIS, DMS …) it will leverage all its power. One of the core technologies for these smart user interfaces is the UT Integrator, making sure that all data are delivered in the right form at the right end. Connecting the dots!

    DMS

    GIS

DMS – GIS IntegrationMost of our utility customers manage diff erent en-vironments for GIS, for Distribution Management (DMS) and for Supervisory Control and Data Acqui-sition (SCADA). Still it is essential to have the same data in all diff erent environments.

UT Integrator provides a solution to bring relevant spatial and attributive information from the GIS into the SCADA environment. In general the GIS is consi-dered as the source of this network data, however the SCADA system needs properly derived GIS data as a source. Changes in the data are synchronized by the UT Integrator. This may be in a product related format or in a more standard format, e.g. CIM, the Common Information Model.

Outage Management may be performed inside the GIS, however if you would be using a DMS system for that, it also would require to synchronize the data between GIS and the DMS. Especially the GIS con-nectivity is supportive to fi nd potential causes of faults in the network. When assigning a crew to a specifi c fault in the network, it is crucial to know where crews are and if they are available for a certain job. UT Ser-ver enables you to perform tracing analysis to locate an incident.
