Experience Matters Celebrating 117 Years ServiceEstablished in 1898 as a one man plumbing business in Richmond, Victoria, founder Albert Edward Smith set in motion an industry leading company that would become one of Australia’s largest and most successful family owned businesses.

The huge demand for plumbing services during Melbourne’s settlement boom at the turn of the century meant AE Smith could hand the business on to his son, Albert Edward Smith Junior. Over the next 40 years, AE Smith Junior broadened delivery to include mechanical services for heating,

cooling and ventilation which saw the business take on larger projects in Melbourne.

This passion for expansion was shared by the founder’s grandson, Barry Smith, who became Managing Director in 1964. Under Barry’s leadership, AE Smith opened offices throughout the country. Today, AE Smith is led by Andrew Permezel, Barry Smith’s son. At the helm since 2001, Andrew continues the AE Smith vision of combining business initiative with family values as Executive Chairman.

Workplace Health & Safety

What are your expectations of safety?

We ask everyone to choose to work safely. We expect everyone to work safely all the time.

A safe, healthy and secure workplace for our people and customers is fundamental to our success. It is a demonstration of the respect and care we have for our employees and their families.

AE Smith is determined to prevent injury and harm to our people with the firm belief that all injuries are preventable and we will act accordingly. Formal safety systems and initiatives by AE Smith include:

• AS/NZS 4801 certified Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Management System independently audited by NCS International.

• “What are your expectations of Safety?” workplace safety YouTube video produced in-house by 100+ AE Smith staff and families.

“Designed to create a fun and engaging activity that generates positive word-of-mouth amongst staff and their loved ones, the creation of short safety videos capturing real people, sharing real expectations, helps refocus our attention on putting safety first in the AE Smith workplace.”

Building Information Modelling (BIM)

BIM is not a technology. BIM is an approach championed by AE Smith that uses digital technologies to create a virtual representation of the information and relationship required to conceptualise, design, construct and ultimately operate a built facility.

Essential to BIM is 3D CAD. In 2007, AE Smith pioneered the transition from 2D to 3D CAD in the Australian mechanical services industry by implementing MAP Software (now Autodesk Fabrication).

Today, AE Smith continues to invest heavily to ensure our people have the digital tools they need to help our customers benefit from the competitive advantages BIM delivers:

• Increasespeedofdelivery(timesaved)

• Bettercoordination(fewererrors)

• Decreasedcosts(moneysaved)

• Greaterproductivity

• Higher-qualitywork.

AE Smith digital technologies:

• Autodesk AutoCAD

• Autodesk Revit

• Autodesk Navisworks project review software

• Autodesk Fabrication CADmep

• Autodesk Fabrication CAMduct

• Autodesk Fabrication FABmep.

Prefabrication & Modularisation

Driven by the passion to help our Construction customers:

• accelerate construction;

• increase productivity;

• mitigate risk;

• maximise workplace safety;

AE Smith is pioneering the use of Modularisation and Prefabrication to find the right outcome for our customers.

Modularisation is the prefabrication and preassembly of mechanical and electrical modular units off-site away from the actual building construction site.

Once complete the finished modular units can then be transported to site for final installation at the building construction site.

“We would like to express our appreciation of AE Smith and all your staff involved in the refurbishment and extension of the Conrad Jupiters Casino… Although there were many instances of excellence from AE Smith... The expansion of the chilled water plant required a carefully planned and executed shutdown of the entire chilled water system… This whole process represented quite a risk to the property, however it was conducted with the utmost level of professionalism, planning and communication, resulting in a perfect integration.”

Now, with a comprehensive maintenance agreement in place, the Club has noticed a significant improvement in the reliability and day-to-day operation of our air conditioning system keeping staff and customers happy while also saving the Club time and money.”

“Like the [Melbourne] Royal Children’s Hospital, the Queensland Children’s Hospital energy plant features trigeneration. What’s different is that energy efficiency and mechanical services specialists AE Smith had the chance to offer their own ‘turnkey’ trigeneration package, complete with diesel generator backup and power generation controls. Rather than electrical and mechanical services being contracted separately, AE Smith has taken the entire responsibility for detailed design documentation, installation and commissioning.”

“I believe over the Victorian Portfolio we have seen a reduction in service calls and operation costs with regard to the Mechanical Services plant. This can be seen in the overall cost savings in both gas and electricity usage for the sites plus the reduced number of service calls for general repairs on the plant and equipment… Right from day one I was very impressed with the professionalism and service delivery by AE Smith and I would never hesitate to recommend they be used on any other sites I am involved in if the opportunity arose.”

“Because AE Smith can provide a turnkey service makes our life easier. The fact that they can provide design and construction services at a competitive price and deliver within a reasonable time gives them a competitive advantage as we don’t have to go down the traditional path of engaging a mechanical/electrical consultant and then go out to tender to various mechanical contractors.”

“In essence the project itself was not overly technical… But it was labelled with risk, risk, risk – a prominent location, major tenant, busy shopping strip, few windows of opportunity, a highly populated area and a railway line adjacent… The difficulty factor was between 9 and 9.5… 60 to 70 per cent of this project’s success was tied up in the planning, and we valued AE Smith’s ability to work with myself and the CBRE project manager and have it go like clockwork.”
