The site for the 177-bed residence hall is a bluff on the Fox River with spectacular southwest views to locks, spillways and a recently renovated paper mill. The building is comprised of two wings with central entrance and public spaces. The residential wings contain approximately 25 beds per floor/wing with a mix of private rooms and suites. Bay windows are provided to promote the long views along the river or back to the central campus. Public lounges spaces with communal circulation occupy the intersection of the two wings. The Lawrence University project was initiated with a design charette lasting two days in Appleton, Wisconsin. Members of the Academic task force, Dean of Student Affairs, Vice President of Business Affairs and the Construction Manager joined in a series of lively discussions and goal setting that led ultimately to the Board of Trustees being able to make a fully informed decision to proceed with a scheme that had enthusiastic support from the University Team. Hiett Hall received the 2004 American General Contractors of America Build Wisconsin Award and the 2003 Wisconsin Builder Top Project Award. The building was also awarded the Wisconsin Green Award.

The new 340-bed residence hall, which is located on the former site of Breese, Nelson and Clemans halls, is the only suite-style residence hall on campus. The five-story, 165,000 SF building is a mixture of suite-style and traditional-plus units. A number of apartment units are part of the program to accommodate residence hall staff. All floors have student lounges. Main floor spaces include: meeting rooms, a computer lab, study spaces and a recreation area. The residence hall will provide sophomore, junior senior and graduate students housing. The UW Oshkosh campus is part of a State of Wisconsin pilot program to make the campus energy independent by 2012. The new residence hall was designed to reduce the building’s energy consumption to 60% lower than a typical code building.

Describe the relevance of this project to the solicited project: The UW Oshkosh Residence Hall is a five-Story project with 340 beds. Community amenities were part of this project as described above. Each suite has two toilet rooms and shower areas. The project also connects to existing campus central utilities, similarly to UW Eau Claire project. The requirements for this project are extremely similar to the submitting project, and we are within days of obtaining the letter of substantial completion.

Describe the project scope, role, responsibilities, challenges and solutions: (include photos, if available)

In a collaborative effort to develop a state-of-the-art student residential facility, a not for profit corporation was formed by the downtown Chicago campuses of DePaul University, Columbia College and Roosevelt University. The corporation, The Educational Advancement Fund, Inc., owns what is appropriately identified as the University Center on Chicago, an 18-floor, 735,000 gross-square-foot residence hall that provides a variety of suite-style and apartments units for approximately 1,700 students and 43 staff members from the cooperating institutions. University Center is strategically located within blocks of the three Chicago campuses. Approximately 34,000 square feet of commercial retail space is located on the street level and the second floor accommodates residential amenities including a food court, multi-media rooms, a fitness center, game rooms, and laundry. The third floor is primarily a residential floor, with a “great room” and a one-half acre landscaped roof garden for the enjoyment of all residents. It was recognized as 2005 Midwest Construction’s Residential/Housing Project of the Year.

Describe the relevance of this project to the solicited project: Like the solicited project, the University Center has a variety of suite configurations; single occupancy and suite style. A number of the suites also have in-unit kitchens. The building includes common areas such as study lounges, a technology center, laundry facilities and a game room for students.

Describe the project scope, role, responsibilities, challenges and solutions: (include photos, if available)

The Roosevelt University Academic, Student Life and Residence Center building is part of a campaign to redefine the image of this University and raise the quality of the campus experience for its students and faculty. The 32-story glass tower is linked to the University’s existing facilities in the historic Auditorium Theater Building, designed by renowned architects Adler and Sullivan. When the building opens, Roosevelt University students will live, learn and socialize in a unique, vertical, urban campus. A primary mission of the University is to prepare students for a lifelong, never-ending pursuit of knowledge and intellectual growth. This goal inspired the design team to model the tower on the sculpture “Endless Column” by Constantine Brancusi. Eleanor Roosevelt, the namesake of the University, continues to inspire social justice activities at the University. The University’s celebration of diversity and their students’ quest for social justice is expressed by the variation in the blue glass wall panels blended harmoniously across the principle facades. Student services and student life facilities, a dining hall, lecture halls, classrooms, and science laboratories are surmounted by a 634-bed residence hall where suite-style dwelling units and lounges have commanding views of the Chicago Loop and Lake Michigan. Connectivity between the 19th-Century stone building and the 21st-Century glass tower is achieved through two-story atria with staircases that will increase student interaction and reduce reliance on the tower’s elevators. Harvesting daylight and superior climate control management are among many sustainable features of this building. It is on track to be certified LEED Silver by the USGBC when it is completed.

Describe the relevance of this project to the solicited project:

This building includes 634 beds in suite-style units. It also has student dining, lounges and other common amenities.

Describe the project scope, role, responsibilities, challenges and solutions: (include photos, if available) In a unique public-private partnership, the University of Cincinnati teamed with the Clifton Heights Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation (CRCURC) to develop much-needed student housing, student apartments for rent, townhouses for sale, retail space, and public landscaped park space in this campus edge district. The project provides a total of 758 beds.

The Calhoun Street Marketplace is located in the center of the development and features an international food court. As part of a mutual-use agreement between CHCURC and the University, the central street of the development will be able to be closed down for special community and University events. The building complex is constructed over a four-level parking garage that provides parking for 1,024 cars and the University Facilities Department.

The solution creates a sympathetic transition between two substantially different urban environments. The massing of the development moves from mid-rise student housing near large University buildings to low-rise townhouses adjacent to the single-family homes beyond the edge of the campus. The L-shaped development also screens the residential neighborhood from a soccer field and other University athletic facilities.

Describe the relevance of this project to the solicited project: This project includes student apartments and parking.
